Unspeakable Evil

FUCK…well, I’m totally fucked now everyone. You’ll never guess what happened. It is even worse than a debilatating injury. My mom noticed that I was putting on some fat in addition to all this muscle I have now and she made an appointment with a pediatrician…thats right, a fucking pediatrician. Well, she asked the doctor if it was ok to drink alot of protien shakes and eat alot of food and he said “No, absolutely not, High protien diets are dangerous to the kidneys and your cholesterol is going to skyrocket. Furthermore, your body isn’t ready to look like arnold yet at 17.5 years old.” He also said that you don’t need to add fat to get muscle and that I shouldn’t be adding fat to my diet (I’m not). He must still think that fat makes you fat or something. And to think this guy went to johns hopkins university… This arguement has been going on in my family between me and my parents for months now and they think because this clown says they are right that they are. Of course we know that they are totally WRONG and high protien diets don’t have any adverse effects on people. Here is the worst part of it: THEY ARE NOT LETTING ME EAT MORE THAN 3 MEALS A DAY NOR ARE THEY ALLOWING ME TO PURCHASE PROTIEN SHAKES. I tried to get my parents to just read the “Protien miths that just won’t die” article from mucsle media and the “Hear no evil see no evil speak no evil” article from muscle media but they won’t even look at it. They are so convinced that I am wrong nothing can persuad them otherwise and now my fitness goals are going down the drain fast. My parents just don’t respect me enough to listen to a word I say. It has to come from someone else. PLEASE if you are a doctor or a nutritionist, please sound off so I can show them your words of wisdom. Second, If anyone has ANY advice AT ALL on what to do, post it here for me. Thanks guys. ~Dawg on the Porch

OK, try this - find info online from doctors just to show your parents that not every doctor believes high protein is bad for you. If nothing else, buy your own food. Just don’t tell them what you eat - this isn’t sneaking drugs after all, only protein. Get a job, you will be able to afford your protein “snacks” between meals. If none of that works, well, you’ll be on your own soon enough. When you are on your own it will be up to you how you eat.

Well, if they call the shots, then what can you do besides try to reason with them? Approach the issue calmly, come armed with a whole stack of studies supporting your position, and don’t get confrontational. Remind them that many docs differ in opinion and that the one they sent you to is not the be-all, end-all authority on nutrition. Ask them exactly what it is they object to: your wanting to lead a bodybuilder lifestyle or your (in their eyes) “unhealthy” protein-consuming habits. Ask them if there’s any way that they would reconsider their stance if you could present thm with evidence that their stance is misinformed. If they simply refuse, I guess you’ll just have to wait until you leave for college! Not everyone can be daelt with rationally, but they’re still your parents.

dawg i’m soz for yah i’ve been wondering where you were at and now i know u were at the most dense pediatrition that there is but don’t blame the guy he is just relaying old information that was spewed out for the masses by even more older pediatrition’s that were dense to begin with well maybe dense is a little harsh, illformned is a better way of putting it. Lets put it this way peditritions are not accustmmed to dealling with the diet of a growing athlete ( but there are a few that are ) so what you got to do is stay calm and think smartly about this one how could you get round the problem hmmmmmmm !!! By being cunning thats how don’t throw a tantrum at your parents because they wont let you manage your own diet, let them think they are winning and they will begin top slacken up on watching every morsel that you consume in the meanwhile start hoarding food at friends houses, in your room etc oh protein bars are easilly hid and or without the wrapper passed off as candy funny that i wouldn’t see them having a prob with you stuffing all day on that, could i be right there !!! Well good luck bro.

Dawg, you are 17 and a half and I’m assuming that you’ll be going off to college soon. Just put up with it for just a few more months and you can do whatever you want. All the more reason to go to college!

I was in this position for a while. What I did was look up every bit of information possible on the internet. then when parents were at work called around to local doctors and asked for their opinion (not all of them will talk without an appoinment) I found a doc that gave me the answers I was looking for then checked to see if he was on my insurance plan. I told my parents that I wanted a second opinion. so we went to the GOOD doc and he told them that what I was doing was not bad. then I told my parents to send me to a nutritionist to make sure I was doing everything right. In the end I won. Hope this helps man.

i feel for u bro, even though my parents don’t care about me taking protein powder, they won’t let me take creatine cause it will “destroy my kidneys” and “college football players died taking it”. so i showed them just about every article i could found on the web and also got them convinced it was safe till we talked to my doctor…this idiot not only said it is bad for you but the he recommened i take a Weight Gainer! granted he is like 50 but come on.

anyway my adivice would be check out Webmd.com my parents felt that it was a realible source…good luck in ur quest to rid the world of ignorance

Most Docs know that 5-6 meals a day is better than 3 … see the pediatrician, and talk with him, he may not have gotten the whole story, and he may be your best alley. When you speak with him/her be calm, know your shit! and present an argument that they have to agree with.
Leave copies of studies around the house for your folks to read…they may not read them in front of you, but curiousity may get them to read them later. Make sure these studies are by accredited individuals…leave tons of them.

See if you get your hands on a copy of Mauro DiPasquale’s Anabolic Diet book. If you don’t want to buy one you could probably get one a a library or something. DiPasquale is an MD & professor @ U. of Toronto (which smokes Johns Hopkins) so your parents might be more receptive to that. He presents really convincing arguments for low-carb high-fat diets and even says the high carb lifestyle is responsible for things like the high incidence (compared to europe) of heart disease & cancer.

Run away from home.

Ironbabe, I already do have a part time job and I buy my own additional milk, cheese, eggs, and tuna. These foods are a substantial portion of my 4000 calorie bulking diet. I will have a stack of studies to blow them out of the water…webmd here I come…it is too perfect a suggestion because my mom goes to web md all the time to look shit up, how hipocritical would it be if she didn’t believe information from her own source?! Mmmmuuuahahahahahaaaa…

Do you guys have any idea where to get all of these studies besides web md, I like to have my sources varied so as to illustrate an undeniable case. Thanks

WTF! All the studies at web md are about how you don’t need a high protein diet to add muscle…WRONG. I need some bodybuilder friendly studies. I actually feel sorry for poor people who go to the gym and bust their ass and then log on to web md and read that shit…it is so sad.

Go on a fat burning diet for 6 months and shred WAY down, then move out and blow back up again.

I’m not sure about the Dr. Atkins diet, but I think it is high protein … it’s a place to start… look for links…bests things in life are the ones you have to work for. Your parents sound like they do really care about you, they just don’t know any better… so teach them… maybe you can help them “live longer stronger”.

You go to school right? See if you can get your school’s S&C coach to give them a call and explain that athletic kids aren’t like the regular ones.

With a sinister grin on your face, tell them your protein will come from your shakes or from THEM. Then walk away laughing wickedly.

Fuck protien, just lift weights and eat healthy. Do you really think that “Protien Shakes” make a real difference?
Nate: I think DiPasquale is at York, not U of T. That’s where Tudor Bompa and the other sport science hacks are (if you can eat with a fork you can go to York).

Load your backpack with Crack, let them find it. Explain to them that not being able to pursue “your” interests has caused you to cave in to peer pressure…I think they’ll soften their position some

LOL gymrat, I did tell them that there are worse things that I could be doing than following a bodybuilding lifestyle. I just had that arguement 5 minutes ago. They won’t let me do this massive eating thing cause it’s “on the edge” and my dad won’t have any “on the edge” behavior in HIS HOUSEHOLD. And that is the end of the story, it is all the retarded pediatrician’s fault, all the studies in the world won’t convince them otherwise. They sucked me into an arguement before I had weapons to fight back with. They use the excuse “He’s a learned man and went to school for 12 years…I think he knows a little more than you do.” My response - “Well thats interesting considering he never excersized in his life.” haha. Well, all of my arguements were disregarded as usual because I’m a stupid kid and know nothing about fitness (my dad is a marathon guy so he assumes he knows everything about fitness). “You don’t need all this food to get bigger, You’re going to get fat!” AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGG…I can’t win against such a potent combination of arrogance and ignorance.
