ah, the joys of breaking in a new belt. mine is 3 months old now, and still stiffer than a new broom. getting set up for deads sucks, but its not too bad for squats.
Yeah I played with it on squats today and it wasn’t nearly as bad (at light weights) as pulling.

So what’s the verdict on squatting with the belt? I squatted in mine today for the first time. No weight. Just trying to get used to the motion with the belt.

Its not as different as DLing with it. It is still in the back of my mind when i squat but I think I will adapt to it faster than I will with pulling.

The good news is my back isn’t any worse. The bad news is that isn’t a whole lot better. Its stiff and slightly painful in the morning and by the evening I feel fine. Its worse the morning after deads and squats and then gets better over time. If I go to my doc he’ll just tell me to stop DLing and Squating but maybe he’ll give me a referal to a chiro. Honestly its just really annoying so I can probably jsut live with it but I’d rather not.
Good lifting!
Just like the others here already said, it takes time and tweeking to get the belt thing right… especially for the deadlift (it did for me anyway). Just gotta keep trying!
My belt was unusable until I put it through the dishwasher and then let it dry rolled up in the sun. However, mine is a single prong belt, not a lever. I couldn’t get the thing buckled without the dishwasher treatment. Here’s a link to the Dave Tate article that talks about breaking in belts:

If your back is still tweaked, I’d think about seeing a chiro.
Nice Bench PR’s. Way to go!
Hope your back heals quickly. Any idea what’s up with it?

I am going to, I am just annoyed that I have to go to my internist to get a referral before I can go to a chiro. Its just a waste of time and co-pay for a five minute visit.

About a decade ago I had a bulging disc. I did all of the right stuff and its not been a problem for a while. It could be that or I could have a slightly pinched nerve. So far it seems to be agrivated, the day after, by squatting more than anything which is odd.

Aint that the damn truth!! Hope you get the back all straightened out soon Joe. I know it takes a toll on one’s psyche.
Thanks JW, it just wears on me, particularly at the gym.

That DL miss made my back very angry. I should have done another rep or two at 360 and not pushed it but 405 came up easy.
Nice work, Joe, the weight is really moving north. Good luck with the back, I know its a real bugger having a tweaky back.
how would you rate your form on your deads?? i would like to see a vid of one of your dead attempts with a near max attempt.
You go over 400 anytime you want with the deads now. hope you get the back straightened out.

Its really hard for me to tell to be 100% honest. I have a feeling at clsoe to a max attempt I’m stiff legging it up. As julie has mentioned before I have really short arms it seems and short legs so it “feels” like my hips are comming up first.
I have had a low back issue in the past but not for many years.
Its hard for me to video while lifting because I lift at lunch but I’ll make the time in the next couple of week and get those videos for you and post them up. I’d really appreciate the advice. As much as I’ve tried to keep good form it probably is a form issue.

Thanks, things were just chugging along great and then wham!

Thanks, I think I’m going to just do the minimum on DL and Squat for a bit and avoid anything else that stresses my low back for a while and see what happens.
Video does not lie. Its worth it to take time out to check form, especially on heavy deadlifts. I’m a form nazi on myself because I just can’t afford to get hurt.

Thats probably wise, I tend to allow for some “slippage” as things get heavy because I’m an idiot like that.
