Fortune Favors the Bold

Dang it!! I didn’t want to start a new log before posting my maxes and year in/end stuff. Oh well. I guess the decision was made for me.

Anyway, the 20th will be 1 year since my 1st post. This week rounds out my 1st year of lifting “heavy” again. Squat max is on Sunday. Bench max is on Tuesday. Not sure how those will go, but I am ready for a change and establishing maxes seems a good starting point.

PHellar- thanks for the encouragement! I have to admit, I am a bit apprehensive about it. So many variables, and I HATE not seeing progress. I know I am stronger than my last go around, but you never know if that is going to show up.

I really need to get maxing out of my head and just move the weights. It is so difficult, though.

Lookin forward to those numbers LS!

Wow, congrats on the one year mark. I am looking forward to seeing your totals. Go get em, LS!

Happy almost first birthday. Its guys like you that make this such a great place.

Thanks gents. Hard to believe it has been a year already. Hopefully I’ll be getting ready to update again 12 months from now.

I feel lucky to have stumbled upon this group. Not just the advice and motivation, but the fellowship. Heck, I feel like I know some of you better than I know the folks I work with everyday.
I am still amazed at how well this group gets along. Shouldn’t be a rare thing, but it really seems to be.

And I very much appreciate being allowed to be part of the family.

As for birthdays…43 days until I hit 41. I would say that I don’t feel that old, but I’m not exactly sure how 41 is supposed to feel.

I’m not sure how it’s ‘supposed’ to feel, all I know is I’ll be 44 in July, and I worry less now about the future than I ever have, and do more to stay in the day. Guess that comes from experience, or something.

I think it is just because we forget what’s going on. Hard to stress over what you don’t remember

Of course, it might be exactly what you said. You live long enough, you see plenty of ups and downs, stress and happiness, etc…, etc… You just learn to shrug it off and do what you have to.

WooHoo! Squat PRs!

Hmmmm…I wonder how many of you saw this coming? (probably several expected my impatience)

I was supposed to max on squats, TOMORROW. I didn’t make it
It’s raining here. So there is nothing to do. I was going stir crazy and wanted to just do it. At least I was able to rationalize it. By maxing today, I get two days without lifting before my bench max, instead of one.

Squat Max Day!!

No dislocates, windmills, stretching or foam rolling.
I walked the stairs 6 times, to loosen the knees and hips, then went straight into it.

Squats
bwx10x2
barx10
135x5
225x3
295x2
345x1
385x1
415x1
435x1 - PR +10# - felt pretty strong…slowed down but never came close to stopping
445x1 - PR +20# - almost stopped, just above parallel, but was able to push through it

** Sorry, no video. I refuse to do it myself anymore, on max attempts, because it is distracting…and the wife was not home. I will do it on rep PR attempts, though.

*** I did not try 455#, even though it was VERY tempting. 455# MIGHT have gone on the 445# set, but I figured there was no reason to push it.

Sumo Deads
225x3
315x1x3

Okay, these sucked. It was hard to get the bar off the floor. Well, hard in comparison to conventional pulls. I did a conventional pull after the 1st sumo pull, at 315. The conventional was MUCH easier.
Each set I tried a slightly different foot placement. They all sucked. Conventional is just significantly easier for me.

When the maxing is over and I swap my routine, there will be fewer partials and I am going to try to add some lighter deads/rack pulls back in. Don’t know if the back will agree, but I don’t want to give up on them.

Yeah baby! great job Strick!

445 is awesome, buddy! Nice work.

Thanks George/Jack. It made for a good weekend. Just nice to see progress.

Nice work my friend.

So I go deep undercover for a few weeks and come back to a 445!!! You’re doing 445? That is great stuff Strick!

Thanks RL, OG. I’m just glad all those singles and heavy partials weren’t for naught.

OG - isn’t it about time for you to emerge from the depths? How is the work thing coming along? Any light at the end of the tunnel?

LS-

I’ve been lurking mostly for a couple months and not posting too much, but I had to post this:

Freaking awesome squatting, brother!!! Congrats!

Thanks, Steely one.

And glad to see you post. Looking forward to seeing you start posting in your log again. Gives me something to shoot for…

Celebrate it. For me it felt a ton better than 31. I’ll be 46 this year. I don’t think of it as heading to 50. I think of it as moving towards competing as a masters 2 lifter.

Happy first birthday.

Nice PR’s you transplanted Oakie! And happy B-Day. I spect you are going to take off this year.

Hey Ouroboro! 46? Really? I would have guessed mid to late 30s. Must be something in the water up there.

That is pretty much the attitude that I have adopted. Every now and then I will get frustrated that I didn’t get back to this until I was knocking on 40s door…but it is what it is. Can’t change it. And it’s better to start now than not at all.

Yep…transplanted. I still miss GA, and the South in general. Given the current political climate (not to mention the economy), though, I am going to stay put for now.

I don’t know about taking off. The newbie/return gains are gone. Things have really started to grind. I am still trying to figure out my goals for the rest of the year.

Bench max tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I know my wife will…as failing to hit a new max kind of sours my mood
