Powerlifting to Olympic Lifting

he is proud of his heritage and obviously you are too PC to understand. I admire the kid, LET THE STARS AND BARS FLY BABY!

in the USA slavery was legal, should we quit flying old glory? go see your shrink and talk to him about how you are guilty of being born white and you feel horrible.

good luck bud, let me know if I can help in any way. Love the flag!

What I’m wondering is, why is this kid even THINKING about lifting in gear at such a young age and such a low level of strength? To be lifting for 3 years and not be able to even bench your own bodyweight? And then jump in a bench shirt? And to not even have a 2x bodyweight squat or dead and put on a suit? Those are basic, beginner’s numbers that should be hit within a year, EASILY.

La powerlifter what comp did you lift in on the 21st ? I lifted in the usapl state champs on the same day but your pics look like a different set up than where I lifted .

How exactly do you draw the conclusion that I am such a paragon of political corectness? Or, much less, that I fail to comprehend the fact that a display of that flag can be born out of regional/historic pride (I believe this issue was addressed in previous postings by myself and others in this thread if you read them).

Again, your evidence for this is what exactly? Truth be told, I am quite proud of my ethnicity, as all should be of their respective lineages.

Do you mean to intimate that the fact that my opinion differs from yours means that I must be affected by some mental abnormality? I surely hope that you are not resorting to such base tactics of argumentation, character attacks get one nowhere in either cogently presenting or arguing their viewpoint.

Sure, say you disagree with me, you are entitled to your views and I will not argue them with you without your posing a question of me. But you do yourself and your ilk little good with such aberrant remarks.

By the way I think shrinks are a crock of shit myself.

You make it sound so easy.

Oh blah blah blah. People who are offended by the Confederate flag are douchebags.

Comparisons to nazism are poor, because the Confederacy was not about slaves. If you think the civil war was about freeing slaves you have a very shallow view of history.

The Union was no better than the Confederacy, witness Sherman’s “scorched earth” policy.

I can’t believe I’ve contributed to this off topic nonsense.

This is very true; the confederacy was not necessarily about preserving slavery (I assume this is what you mean by ‘the confederacy was not about slaves’). The confederacy and the civil war more broadly had a great deal to do with the confederate desire to maintain autonomy economically and politically. The economic structure of the time functionally made the south subject to the north as the south had an agriculturally based economy that provided the input materials for much of the manufacturing in the north. As such they were largely locked into the system due to the transportation costs involved with selling and getting their wares to other consumers.

With respect to the political situation, the industrialization of the north coincided with a demographic shift in that through migration and immigration, which flowed to the jobs in the northern states, the south was losing power comparatively in the legislatures. That said, it is fairly well known that at least in principle (most had slaves prior to the prohibition of slave ownership in their respective states) many political figures from the north did support abolition. This combined with the fact that slavery had previously been banned in many states which were gaining more sway in the legislatures by way of migrant and immigrant population inflows did create the potentiality that slavery would be banned in the south. This was A FACTOR, only one of many factors in the causal chain that precipitated the civil war. Do not kid yourself and think slavery played no role in this conflict though.

I readily agree with you though that the north was not primarily concerned with freeing slaves - I never have said anything to the effect that it was, so I do not know how you can make the above assertion - The north’s primary concern was keeping the country whole. This was not a concern born out of some sort of nationalism, but rather the same narrow economic self-interest that drove the south to ceseed. The south (in the form of its agricultural producers) would have had far more ability to set favorable prices were the confederacy to have realized its ambition to be autonomous, the north (in the form of its industrial producers) would have conversely been subject to the power of this trading block and would have become less efficient and seen profits decline.

I can see how you would have conceived of my understanding of the civil war as being centered on the issue of freeing slaves exclusively as I have stated more than one time that slavery is one thing that is often associated with the confederate flag. However I will have you note that I did not once represent this as a contention that I personally hold to be true - it is simply a fact that by virtue of the piss poor and dumbed down educational system in this country many people have been taught that this was the only issue of contention in the civil war, and, as such, most people make this association. I would point out the fact that beyond this cause for the association of racism with the confederate flag there is also the fact that it is often flown by white supremacist groups - this is the reason that some have such a visceral reaction to the flag. In my opinion - you may disagree - this later cause for the association of racism with the confederate flag does legitimate a comparison on some level with Nazism (in addition to the fact that some white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups now fly, and have for some time have flown both a Nazi and a Confederate flag side by side) as the elimination of a group based upon their ethnicity is advocated by both Nazis and white supremacists (although there are, of course exceptions to such blanket statements with respect to any group). It is also interesting that some of the rationale of these groups is strikingly similar.

Hope that clears things up for you brother.

Paul

Yeah? At this point in his training, it should be easy.

You should be able to do a double bodyweight deadlift and a bodyweight bench press. Why? A double bodyweight deadlift means that the posterior chain has been built up enough to begin the process of adding something to the rest of the frame. And if you can’t bench your bodyweight, don’t ask me about all the other stuff until you can do it. You need to have some basic strength to support advanced training. If you don’t, get it![/quote]

He shouldn’t be in gear, period. He’s not even benching 80% of his bodyweight after THREE years of lifting? WTF has he been doing?

WoW … This is the first time that I’ve logged in to my T-Nation account since January … and I’m still surprised at how quickly the subject changed from lifting to what flag I took my pictures infront of …

I don’t think that I know anyone who isn’t proud of their heritage and where they’ve came from … so I don’t see why it’s so wrong for me to fly a flag that my ancestors carried into battle … just like I have had many ancestors, family members, and friends fight and die for the “Stars and Stripes” …

Flying the Confederate flag doesn’t mean that I don’t love America … and flying the Confederate flag doesn’t mean that I condone slavery, racism, or anything like that … it just means that I’m proud to have been born and raised in the South, and that I will not forget the thousands of men who fought and died to try to protect their families, their homes, and their lively-hood here in the South …

I’ll post about lifting later … this is all I have time for now …

But the politically correct would make sure that NO ONE laughed at this.

The confederate flag is OFFENSE to African-Americans PERIOD. It is RACIST. It has nothing to do with political correctness. I hope supporters of racist symbolism wear that emblem in the wrong neighborhood around the wrong people at the wrong time. End of discussion.

Oh I wouldn’t say that it’s the end of the discussion.

Tell me why the American flag is not offensive to African Americans? Didn’t Washington, Jefferson and other founding fathers own slaves?

“The confederate flag is OFFENSE to African-Americans PERIOD. It is RACIST.” ??

I don’t know if you’ve ever thought about it … but where the hell would “African-Americans” be if it wasn’t for AMERICAN plantation owners?

What if there was never any demand to ship slaves to AMERICA?

What if?

I’ll tell you “what if …” … y’all would all be chasing damn animals across the deserts of Africa in a damn loin-cloth …

I don’t care whether you like the idea or not, but if you want to push this “racist” issue … and damn “slavery” issue … just think about where y’all would be if you’d never been brought to AMERICA?

It woulda’ been one hell’uva swim across the Atlantic …

Africa basically had NO infastructure before the Europeans started moving in,taking land and enslaving the natives …

The people of Africa just lived day to day, just hunting food … just hunting water … and just trying to survive …

What part of that cycle leads them to become educated about America or life outside of Africa?

Have you ever heard of any African explorers coming to America?

Was there ever some big group of Africans that desided to come to America to better themselves?

NO!

The American slave owners are the reason for Africans being brought into America … and it’s this America that eventually did free the slaves and over time gave them the same rights and opportunities of all the other citizens of America …

This AMERICA has given those desendants of African slaves all the same rights as those people who have immigrated on their own … we are ALL EQUAL whether you like it or not, or whether you agree or not …

… but all you want to do is piss and moan about RACISM and the SOUTH and all that BS … but where would you rather be??

Would you rather be in a country that thousands upon thousands have died to protect the homeland and the freedoms and rights that we all enjoy … living in a nice home with food on the table and your family safely tucked in their beds at night?

-OR-

Would you rather be in a 3rd world country … fighting to survive every day because there is no government to come in and help you or to provide anything? Living in fear of some random militant group coming to take over your village and kill your children??

… hmmmm …

What has AFRICA done for you lately??

You run around b*tching about being “African-americans” and your heritage and how bad the slaves had it and how aweful white people are and all that BS … but yet you won’t set back and think about how all these things came to pass …

Heck, even after this great country of ours has done everything it can to right the wrongs, you still won’t refer to yourself as an “AMERICAN” …

… you have to make the point to refer to yourself as an “African-american” …

… I seriously doubt that you were born in Africa … and probally no one in your family has been born in Africa in over 100 years … but yet you still won’t claim the name “AMERICAN” …

How about you just go take a piss on our flag and say “Fck you America! I don’t give a dmn if you do keep me safe at night and provide an economy for me to make a living and support my family! Fck you America! I don’t care how many fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters have spilt their blood on forgein soil to keep this nation free! Fck you America! I don’t give a dmn about the great life you have given me and my family for generations! Fck you America, I’m going to Africa!!”

Yeah … you just do that …

… I’ll still be here in the good 'ole U.S. of A. waving both the “Stars & Stripes” and the “Stars & Bars” proudly as I cherish my AMERICAN heritage … because I was not born anywhere else … I was born in AMERICA! … I am an AMERICAN! … and I would prouldly step up and give my life for Her because she have given so much to me …

You just think about that …

First of all I am proud to be an AMERICAN. I would not want to live anywhere else.

Secondly, you say African-Americans have to make a point of referring to themselves as African-Americans. I rarely refer to myself as an African-American except during discussions about racism. I have AMERICAN born friends who are proud to be Italian, Irish, German, and Russian. Do you have a problem with white ethnics being proud of who they are?

Thirdly, when have you ever heard me bitch and moan about racism or complain about how bad slaves had it or how awful white people are? Most of my friends are white. You are making GROSS generalizations.

Lastly, I NEVER called YOU a racist. Your BEHAVIOR is. Not taking into consideration how offense the confederate flag is to some people is insensative and RACIST.

After reading your last post, you obviously have racial issues, which is something you will have to deal with. Most of your ranting is textbook Racism 101.

Lets get back discussing PL and OL.
