Pour Some Sugar on Me

If by “Olympic shoes” you mean the ones with the elevated heel, then my understanding is that with no change in flexibility, an elevated heel will allow you to squat deeper than normal (in flat heeled shoes).

Also, my understanding is that unlike a back squat, the correct cue for an overhead squat is to go straight down, because breaking back makes it harder to keep the overhead weight aligned correctly.

If practice under adverse conditions is not possible, I’ve always found visualization as a substitute to be quite effective. (When combined with a little talent and a great work ethic of course, which you obviously possess.)

You have but to drop by sometime. We picked up an Elite deadlift bar a while ago, and it is lovely. Come by on a Saturday and you can be treated to the entertaining spectacle of me trying to deadlift.

It’s like a cat in a fez on a log going over a waterfall, only funnier.

How could I refuse an offer like that. I’ll mock your dead lift and you can mock my bench. On the subject of bench, I’m going to have another go at Althea’s old Super Katana. I think I’m strong enough to control it now.

Friday August 27

Squat (wearing O shoes)
45-10
115-5
155-3
185-3,3,3,3,5
I really focused on form and depth. 185 is heavy enough (raw) to make me think about it but not so heavy it’s a grind. I wanted to keep it kind of light and easy(ish) tonight. After this week, I’m going to be squatting and deadlifting raw/briefs, straps down, straps up in rotation. This should give me time to recover from the heavier weights but keep me used to gear.

Bench - light
75-8x3

MP
70-8,6,7,5

DB row
42-3x10

Overhead squats AND olympic shoes? I’m jealous on both fronts. Was it hard to get good depth on the OH squat? I just dont have the flexibility for that. Its something I will work on either late this year or early next. I dont know why, but I am facinated with them and highly impresed by people who do them.

Eh, I’m jealous of anyone who does OH squats. They seem so hard, I can barely do them with a 15 lb DB :frowning:

I wouldn’t touch an OH squat if my life depended on it.
Punny Guy it seems that for the most part that with the elevated shoes it should work.
I personally like the Converse shoes, but I also seem to have depth issues that lead me to believe
I will switch back to my Safe shoes. It is a rollercoaster ride after all.

At our ages, BB, depth issues are probably flexibility issues. (not that I’m a powerlifter by any stretch of the imagination)

The OH squat -I think I might have to focus some more time and energy on it, now that I see that there’s finally something I can do that most of the strong guys (meaning almost everyone relative to me) won’t do! lol

Now we are REALLY dating ourselves. I don’t think they even use those terms nowadays!!!

Saturday August 28
We had a trip to train with the Niagara club in St. Catharine’s today for a bit of fun. My goal was to pull my planned third from the meet. Since I didn’t blow my figurative load last weekend, I thought I’d try it today.

Deadlift
135-5
225-3
275-3 straps down/belt
305-1 straps up
335-1 "
365-1 " This was a couple lbs over my planned third. It flew up like nothing. Then I lost my grip at the top before I could lower it :frowning: It caught the edge of my left shoe but barely grazed my toes. That would have stung.
295-3 straps down. I was pulling back so hard on my third, I went backwards ass over teakettle into the window of the squash court.
295-6 straps down

Snatch grip deads
135-10
155-10
175-10
185-10

Floor press
45-10
65-10
95-6
115-5
120-2,2

Weighted sit ups with 10lb plate behind my head
3x20

OH squats - this was for mobility to loosen up my upper back from the pulling
45-10
65-2x10

When we got home, I played around with grip work. I decided that the best way to work my grip for deadlift is to just hold heavy weight locked out at the top of a dead lift. I set up my rack so the range of motion was 1" at most and worked my way up to 365 for 12 seconds and 285 twice for 6 seconds each. I’ll be doing this a couple of times a week.

nice going at 365! you are able to hold the weight - what do you think happened doing the actual lift earlier?

I think I was surprised at how quickly it came up that I slowed it down at the top and held it for too long.

Great work, that’s a big lift.

Thanks. The entire back side of my body hates me today from my abductors to my upper back. My erectors are still blowing out smoke. I think it was the 40 reps of snatch grip deads.

I didn’t bend down today. If I dropped anything, I either picked it up with my toes or kicked it under the furniture. It reminded me of being pregnant.

I have almost overbalanced myself pulling back too hard on too-light deads. But I’ve not yet gone flying. Something to aspire to since generally I need to pull back better…

Damn. You must be sore. I’d be bedridden for a month if I tried to pull 365 followed by snatch grip DLs.

Tuesday August 31

Bench
45-10
65-5
95-3
105-2
Taking the super katana for a spin again. I haven’t tried it in a few months. Last time I tried it I couldn’t get a single at 155 because it took too much energy just to control the shirt. However, my bench has gotten better and the tweaks to my F6 have pulled me similar to the Katana. Frank put the shirt on without really pulling it down except to keep the collar off my neck.
135-3 to 3 board
155-3 to 2 board
165-3 to 1 board
175-1,1 to chest - 10lb PR
155-3 to chest
I was pretty happy with this. The shirt wasn’t jacked. I can’t wait to see how I do when it’s pulled a bit tighter. I played it pretty conservatively because of my previous experience - it’s a lot of shirt and my arms are chewed up pretty badly.

Squat-light
135-5x5

Good mornings
135-5
155-5
175-5
195-5
210-2

DB bench
42-6,6,5,5,4 = 26 (+9 over last week)

Bar holds
365-16 seconds, 6 seconds
385- 16 seconds, 3 seconds

The second super short holds were with a reverse grip. My normal is left supinated/right pronated. I switched it up and it felt really odd and weak.

Nice work in the shirt. That bench of yours is really starting to come along.

Thanks very much. We were just talking about you last night wondering what you were up to.

Not much (and I like it). Trained raw last week and this week. I’ll start back in gear on Friday for my deadlifts (Saturday will be 8 weeks out).

I dropped my registration in the mail yesterday for Oct. 30th, now I’m just finalizing my training cycle.
