I kind of want to try that barbarian workout and Crew-dude you should have to post a pic of yourself in full barbarian gear working it out.
Like some kind of snow viking fur man thong and all while you tote the strongman bag and hit something with the sledgehammer!
it actually does sound fun though.
Haha I was wearing a bunch of Under Armour winter gear! Stupid snow. lol
Maybe I’ll have a workout partner next time and they can take a picture!
Thanks for having such a detailed account for everyone to read. I read it every morning as I t offers some new perspectives on training, nutrition and mental aspects. And thank you for keeping it real for others (myself included) that juggle work, studies and personal life with lifting!
I wanted to ask you about your back injury. You mentioned that you had broken back. Exactly what is the damage (how extensive) and how has your training been modified in order to prevent any recurrence? Sorry to intrude and hope it’s not too personal to ask.

Not too personal at all and thanks for following along so much!
How exactly it happened the doctors don’t know. In the x-rays you could see some faint cracks in the last to vertebrae so I had a bone scan done. They injected me with the radioactive isotope and I came back to the hospital later that day. I had to lie down on this table in the most god awful position for 30 minutes while the camera rotated around me. On the 29th frame with 30sec’s left the machine broke and we had to redo it all!
By this time my bladder had filled up enough that it was partially blocking the view so they were unable to tell if they were compressed or what happened to cause the fractures. Of course this very useless information cost me $400 bucks out of my college pockets (apparently the university health care that I bought didn’t cover this!).
So the end result from these doctors was that I had cracks in my spine and they gave me a back brace which did nothing. They also put me on the max steroid anti-inflammatory dose you can have which cause me to throw up every few hours (no wonder I lost so much weight right?). So after this horribly useless waste of money I went to some alternative medicine/ anti-aging clinic in the middle of nowhere SC.
Well the rest is history as you can read from my Physique Clinic forum. But after the $400 for the bone scan, $200 for the anti-inflammatory, $100 for the back brace I doubt it comes as a surprise I couldn’t afford any more prescriptions.
During this whole time my back would randomly give out and I would hit the ground. I fell down many stairs for the next year or so. The biggest thing that I found to help was to strengthen the muscles around my spine. So I did lots of back extensions and that really helped. That’s really all I’m doing to keep it from happening again, along with not rowing and watching my form while I lift!
I hope that goes into a lot more detail and answers your questions!
Oops my bad I forgot to add why I was at that clinic in the first place.
I had gone there to try accupressure which is supposed to be better than accupuncture for what I had. Well all that was, was a painful massage (my insurance of all things paid for this). So in all of my 21 years of wisdom my thought process was, “hmm anti-aging, old people have bad backs, so maybe they can help.” At that point I walk across to the other side of the clinic and things went down hill from there.
Needless to say I didn’t make the best of decisions but I was pretty desperate and luckily things worked out pretty well.
Lol now hopefully that fills everyone in and we can get back to talking about training and nutrition!
I’ve also noticed greater lifts when I’m pissed. Lately though, when I try to artificially get pissed off before a set, I just can’t find something to focus on. How do you go about this? I wish I had that article…
Crew… I dont know about you, but ive always found that when my diet is the exact same day it is actually easier for me…without choice, there is less chance ill screw up.
Also, about CT’s latest post, i totally agree, its always easier for me to eat clean when somebody else is around, but im just vain like that.

For me I think about that little dork of a guy making fun of my boat and I during a race. When I go for a max on deadlift I kick the bar with my shin. Haha I know it’s a dumb meathead thing to do, but it works!
I also think about all the guys smaller than me that will be able to outlift me if I don’t go all out.

Hey, man are is your diet the same thing everyday? Any changes in the coming in the future or does CT have you stuck on that one meal plan?
Yup the diet is the same every day expect on non-training days as I leave out the Post-workout meal of 2 oranges and SURGE Recovery.

I totally agree that it’s easier for me to stick to a diet when it’s the same every day. That way there is almost no chance at cheating on it.
I don’t care who’s around when I eat man, I just love cake though. Haha it’s my one downfall when it comes to foods.

I was wondering how you eat your berries. Do you buy fresh and just eat them? Out of a bowl with a spoon? Mix them in your shake?
I would assume they are not sweetened. Do you add sweetener of any (ie Splenda)?
What I do is buy them frozen and then pour them into a bowl and keep it in my fridge. I then either measure out 2 cups of the mixture and eat them like that or I put them in my shake in the morning.
You are correct, they are unsweetened and I do not add anything to them.
CP,
I’ve looked at a couple stores (FarmFresh. Harris Teeter, Walmart, and Food Lion) and couldn’t find the Yams in water, only in syrup. I was wondering if you get them from a chain grocery or a health food store?
Thanks!

I got them from a Wal-Mart type store, very hard to find though and in fact I bought them out and haven’t seen them since. Maybe it’s only for the holidays?

Why not just buy fresh sweet potatoes from the produce section? You can zap’em in the microwave like a regular potatoe. I would think they would be cheaper than canned, and better for you.

They actually aren’t cheaper and these are already cut up. Measuring 1 cup of a whole sweet potato is kinda hard.
In the future though it looks like I will be using the produce ones since I can’t find the ones in water.
I have been watching all you Physique Clinic guys and I am learning from your experiences. I have applied for the Physique Clinic and hope to get picked to participate; until then I’ll be watching your progress. You guys are setting an example for the rest of us. Keep pressing towards the mark!
I am going to buy my sandbags to make my Barbarian duffle bag. I will use mine on Sunday afternoons. I am sure my neighbors will get a hoot out of me carry my duffle bag around the block!
