Hey Bartl,
Do you know if coach CT is going to keep you on a low carb diet when you tansition to triathlon training?

Wow, I never even thought about that. I must admit it made me laugh thinking about training for a tri without carb’s.
I guess that’s why they sent me Metabolic Drive Complete, which has a ton more carbs than its Low-Carb brother. I would suspect I will be drinking that and a lot more SURGE Workout Fuel as that is loaded with performance carbs.
this is a question for your coaches, or perhaps you if they have explained the principles behind your diet.
in novagreg and bartl’s diets i dont see any pork or dairy used or mentioned.
im aware that in a low carb diet with limited calories - dairy may not fit in too well - but are there other reasons (chemical?) that contribute to them being left out?
as for pork - it is fatty, and often salty when prepared. but if you are on a fat dominant diet and eat lean only pork loin… are there other reasons to avoid this?
for both pork and dairy - would you avoid these in all diets or just in fat loss?
lastly - is coconut oil quality a big deal? i would presume it is but would like to know if there is a way to test purity, or what i should look for to judge its quality?

Many great questions and some of which I will ask Thibs to explain in my thread. As for the coconut oil, I would stick to the organic kind. Actually, when it comes to oils, ie olive oil, macadameia nut, coconut etc…I always prefer an organic kind. I can really taste the difference in the quality and organic is just all around better for you. The one draw back to going organic is that it is much more expensive.

I do recall Thibs giving me the OK to go ahead and switch out my meats for any “game” type animal. A pig is something you can kill and would fall under that category.
I will still ask the question though.

Could I trouble you to ask coach Thibs the question? I’m trying to follow your program and I have a long bicycle race at about the same time as your tri.

Oh, and I know it’s kind of stupid, but I like Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping” (I get knocked down, but I get up again…) as a motivational tune on my iPod.

Good song indeed, it just makes me want to drink and pick a fight though.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the heavy alcoholic aspect of that tune. I tend to just focus on the main medley, haha! Too much drinking going on in the rest of that. Oops! Nevermiiiind… ![]()

Hey man I was reading through your physique clinic and I noticed you were snowboarding in Washington. My favorite place to board is up there and is known for getting a ton of powder. Are you by any chance at Baker? If so have fun and rip!
I actually live 57 miles from Baker and have been riding there since I was 4. I am going up there tomorrow and will try and post a couple pictures in this thread for all to enjoy. They are supposed to get a shit load of snow by then. Right now its 38 degrees and raining here in town so it is dumping on the mountain!

Hey Bartl,
First off, congrats, you’re doing great! Secondly, what city in Washington? I just moved back to So. Cal. after living the last 8 years in Bellingham, which is about 50 miles from Baker! Keep up the great work!

Born and raised in Bellingham. I grew up on the north side of Lake Whatcom where my brother now lives. My folks moved out to Ferndale to get away from the city.

Right On! I lived in Sudden Valley for the past eight years and my practice was on James St. You’re doing great so keep up the good work! I do have a question on your diet though. Your eggs you state is with pepper. Is that black pepper or a bell pepper? Keep it up! Jim
Bartl -
Funny but the thing that stuck out to me as I was reading over your posts for the past few days was your rant on the “Urgency Clinic/Room” which in the south we call the “Emergency Room”.
The reason that they don’t look to worried about you or the wait is 1 to 2 hours is because people do exactly what you did. They go in for some kind of sinus infection or mild cold. So the attendants there can never really tell if someone is there out of necessity or convenience.
I don’t mean to pick on you or anything but shitty ERs is a real pet peeve of mine after my wife broke her back at the beginning of 2007 and we sat in the ER waiting room for almost 2 hours. I wanted to END the people that worked there so bad.
Oh, by the way, great job on your progress. Hahah…

Well, here is the punchline…they set up these “urgent care” clinics BECAUSE the ER’s were too over crowded with colds and “non-emergency” type cases. You see the irony here?
BTW…thanks for compliment!

Jim, what kind of practice did you own/run? The valley huh? I used to golf out there all the time. A buddy that I grew up playing hockey with was one of the pro’s out there so I never had to pay…he he.
As for the diet, black pepper…for seasoning.

Chiropractic! And we never liked living in the Valley! If Bellingham would get an inch of rain, SV would get 3!
Hey Bart -
I know that CT has had you monitoring some stats on waking. While I’m impressed with the resting heart rate, I’m surprised that by now your temp hasn’t gone up a little. I would have expected that by now your “base metabolic rate” would be higher, so in essence your internal furnace would have kicked up a notch. Any comment from Thibs on this???
Some other random thoughts in passing:
Tilapia smelling/tasting “fishy” - my experience has been that if the stuff is truly fresh it will NOT be fishy at all. The only time I’ve had “fishy” Tilapia is when it was just plain spoiled (old) OR when it had been thawed & re-frozen numerous times. If you can, look for another source, or look for another fish (my local “food club” gets great “farm raised” tilapia, catfish, and walleye and it’s never frozen - and I’m in Ohio!). You might also try soaking it in milk for 10-15 minutes, as this is common to remove fishy taste…
Also, for your “spice arsenal” look for the McCormick mix called “It’s a Dilly” - basically dill, garlic, and lemon peel (and NO salt). It is awesome on fish, and gives a little of the “tartar sauce taste” without the demon mayonnaise… Don’t know if you like the taste of curry, but consider dusting your fish with curry powder and grilling it - makes for a GREAT salad topper that way.
Your Ibuprofen dosing: dunno if you’re cutting down yet or not, but that is some heroic dosing (did I read that you’re taking 1800mg several times a day??). Aren’t you concerned about your liver? Do you really need to take that much??
Don
BTW - I had to laugh at this:
surf - 1.5 hours
work - 3 hours
surf - 1.5 hours
train - 1.5 hours
Throw in eating, driving, showering, and all miscellaneous activities, I’ve had a busy day.
Yeah - tough life! ![]()
You know something Don, sometimes life on the ocean can be really, really tough. Like yesterday, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself.
Just kidding, I know some people probably want to kill me after reading that.
Let me try and see if I can answer your questions:
That stats I have been keeping have not been on the walks, rather they are the measurements right when I wake up. It would be interesting to moniter those things while walking, I might do that sometime this week.
As for the HR and temperature stuff, honestly, I have no idea what any of that means, I just do it because I was told to. I forgot to post my measurements yesterday and my temperature was up to 96.7, but today it’s back down to 95.8.
I hope you didn’t miss understand what I wrote regarding the fish. To me, tilapia is not fishy at all, but then again I love any and all type of fish no matter how fishy they might taste.
Thank you for the spice recommendations, I will definitely give those a try.
When I read what you said about the 1800 mg’s of Ibuprofen I almost shit myself but I can see how there could be a misunderstanding. I am taking 600 mg’s three times a day. Once in the morning, lunch and dinner. Depending on how the knee feels, I might take some right before bed. The last couple days I’ve been right around 800 mg’s for the entire day, so I am trying to cut back a little.
The knee feels amazing. It hasn’t been stiff or sore in the last couple days, and surfing hasn’t bothered it at all. I did get slammed the other day and bruised my ankle on a rock, but other than that I can just tell that my body is really fatigued. I’ve been going pretty hard these last couple days.
If some of you have been wondering why I haven’t been posting my music its because instead of typing out the good songs, I have just been putting them in a playlist on my iTunes. So far I’m up to 52 songs, just about 3.3 hours worth of music.
Once I am done, I will post all the songs and artists. I would like to post all the music on a site for all to take if they want it but need some suggestions.
I was thinking rapid share but I don’t want to pay to use the site. If anyone has any idea’s of where I could post this for you readers to get, let me know.
Hi, Chris:
It’s interesting that we have a Chris as the subject of a Physique Clinic, a Chris as the nutrition guy and a Chris(tian) as the exercise guy. With this intersection of Chrises and good fitness, I’m hoping some of this rubs off on my 5-year old son - also Chris - so he’ll be a studly babe magnet - like all you other Chrises - when he gets older.
Just a comment on your post about the USS Reagan - I live in Buellton and went down to Cabrillo Beach to see her this weekend. As a point of trivia, the aircraft on the deck was an F/A-18 Hornet. The specimen we could see from the shore was actually a non-flight unit that travels with the Reagan as a static display. It bears the names of the Reagan’s captain and first officer below the canopy as a symbolic gesture to the ship’s command. The F-16 Falcon is actually an Air Force airplane that does not land on aircraft carriers.
(I’m sort of an airplane buff and I’m impressed by military flight hardware. I hope to go mach 1 some day - and not only in my dreams!)
I have been following your PC thread, and you really inspire with your progress and attitude. I’m somewhat of an endo (like you seem to be) so I’m paying more attention to your thread than the others. When my shoulder heals (I told you about that in an earlier PM) I hope to apply for a future PC (if these things continue) and see if the coaches will take on a 45 year-old and try to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. The clinic’s “clients” so far are all younger guys. It’ll be nice to see if they want to take on the challenge of restoring a middle-ager to health and vitality. (Or, at least, less suckiness.)
Again - great work. You seem like a cool guy.
I’m glad you were down on Cabrillo because there is no way I was going to into that mess of people. The ship is a pretty amazing site to look at though.
As for the plane, thank you for the correction. I guess you are a plane buff.
