People With Flat Feet

What do you guys do for your flat feet. Do you wear any certain shoes or anything like that. I have always had EXTREMELY flat feet…absolutely no arch. I have never used insoles or any special shoes. I was reading an article on here about it and it showed a diagram of the sole of a flat footed persons shoe. It was showing how flat footed people walk on the outside of their foot all the time and the shoe in the article was worn down on the outside edge.

I took off my shoe and checked mine out. The inside edge looked like new and the outside edge was worn smooth. This leads me to believe I have some real problems to address. I guess I just want to get a thread started that talks about general care for flat footed people and what we should do to help us lift safer and any other problems that can be addressed. Maybe we can even get some experts in here to help out.

Yeah my feet are as flat as a board. I’m just wondering, is it at all painful to walk, or are you just concerned because your shoes are wearing abnormally. When I played basketball back in grade school I used to be in incredible pain after ten minutes of running/jumping.

Finally, I went to the podiatrist, and that was when I first realized that I had flat feet, and that I walked abnormally. He told me to buy some inserts and then, basically, taught me how to walk all over again. Since then I haven’t had any problems, I even deadlift in bare feet now. If you’re really concerned I’d suggest seeing a podiatrist because even if you were to get inserts, chances are you would still walk abnormally. Good luck, let me know if you have any questions.

Yeah I had really bad pain when I was younger and it got to the point where my whole foot pretty much turned red and I had trouble walking. I was originally given inserts due to my “flat” feet and told that id probably have arthritis by the time i was 16.

My mom didn’t want to hear that so I ended up going the children’s hospital in boston and they took out some of the bone from the side of my foot(I was 10). Hasn’t been painful since but im wondering if my knees are gonna be messed up later on in life. Anyone ever heard of this?

I always had flat feet, but I didn’t do anything about it until I started having pain. I went to a podiatrist and they x-rayed my foot and found 5 stress fractures. I had to walk in a walking cast for about 5 weeks. After that somehow my knees got all messed up (I hate those temprorary casts), probably from walking wrong. I went to physical therapy and received custom made orthodics.

From what I understand is for some people othordics are a temporary fix and eventually the foot shapes to how it is supposed to be. My dad wore orthodics for about 6 months and his feet are normal. I’ve worn mine for 5 years and still have to wear mine, the only time I don’t is when I race in track.

Definitely see a podiatrist so you find out how to prevent any problems.

Hey,

Do you have any symptoms? i.e. pain, instability (or balance issues), lack of strength, etc?

Many people can have flat feet and they do not cause a problem at all.
Some people with flat feet can have problems all up and down their body - possibly if their flat feet are caused by a general laxity in their ligaments.

I find it interesting that you’re wearing the outside of your shoe out… most of the people with flat feet I’ve seen weight-bear on the inside edge of their feet, not the outside. Do you have any photos of your shoe soles?
(Don’t worry, I’m not trying to measure your bf%)

Do you also have a link handy to that article?

Cheers
