Is it possible to tear the pec where it inserts into the sternum or clavicles? I ask this because any pec tear I’ve seen or heard about was torn near the humerus.
Sorry to bump a really old thread, but does anyone have an answer to this?
Sure, but it’s a lot harder since the origin of a muscle is anchored much more securely than the insertion. Muscles tear every way, but usually the easiest way.

This. It would have to be some really weird stress pattern to tear the origin. I can’t even picture it in my head. I’ve never heard of it happening either (obviously that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t or can’t though).
My HS wrestling coach tore his pec at the sternum his senior year wrestling. Not exactly sure how it happened, I could find out if need be.

I’m thinking some blunt trauma can be a precursor. Imagine getting hit somehow in the chest. There would be some local tearing of fibers which would weaken the area.
That and sometimes weird stuff happens.
