Pec Pain

I have not trained by pectorals directly in about six years due to a fear of tearing my left pec. In 1994, I was benching 315 for reps and felt a slight tear. My left pec was sore for a few days and I took about three years off from training my pecs. In 1997, after several weeks of heavy benching, I heard a rip and felt a sharp pain in my left pec and I have not trained my chest directly since 1997.

In the past (1990-97), I have experienced discomfort from doing flyes and inclines as well.

I was wondering what type of damage I might have done to my left pec. My doctor didn’t have a clue and said that he couldn’t tell if any damage occurred and I have a small dent in my left pec, near the armpit when I flex my pec. Also, I still experience discomfort in my left pec even though I have not worked my chest muscles directly for years.

I have dislocated my shoulders on multiple occasions playing football and I believe that my lack of stability in my shoulders has contributed to my problem.

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks

Your doctor couldn’t tell you if you had a torn pec? Did he even order an MRI?

ART would help. You also need a very detailed shoulder exam to rule out any tears in the labrum.

Some people have a natural “dent” in their pecs. Look at old pics of Franco Columbo, and he had it, so a dent isn’t really all that bad.

Get an MRI to find out for sure.
