Pec Tear Recovery

Hey guys I posted this in the injuries and rehab forum a week or so ago, but someone commented suggesting there may be more fellas who have had the same thing happen in the powerlifting forum. Here’s the original post:

Hey everyone I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has had a complete pec tear that needed surgical reattachment. I tore severely 2 weeks ago today, and had surgery 9 days ago. I’m in the sling phase right now. Just kind of wanted to know how everyone’s recovery process went, how long it took, the different stages (ex. when you can start doing push ups, pull ups, etc.), how much muscle lost, etc.

I weighed 252 the day it happened and I’ve cleaned up my diet significantly. If I eat like a 250lb powerlifter while i cant lift for 6 months i couldnt even imagine how fat id get…so it looks like i have to get skinny. It’s really hard watching all of the work i’ve toiled to accomplish deteriorating more each day. Definitely hard to deal with. Anyone else go through the same thing?

Ask Dave Tate on the Q&A section at elitefts.com. He’d know better than anyone.

I already did actually…they didn’t answer my question though. I think I’ll resubmit it though because they take the last 25 submitted and just answer those if im not mistaken, so you just have to get lucky i suppose.

Very sorry to hear about the accident, only had a minor tear myself so dont know how much i can contribute with. How did it happen, probably during bench, but was it 1rm attempt etc, suited /raw ?

wish you a speedy recovery

They’re usually really good about answering questions. Direct it to Dave Tate specifically. I also know Zane Geeting is still recovering from one and his log on elitefts so check it out and send him a message too.

Good stuff guys thanks for the help. and to dalle, yeah it happened on bench press doing a heavy single…the strange thing about it is that i use a pretty narrow grip, like one inch outside of my shoulders. i had 385 on the bar and 365 went up effortlessly, so i assumed 385 would go right up too…but much to my dismay the pec tore completely off at the bottom for God knows what reason. i thought i was going to hit 405 that night too. what a fucking shame.

Best article I’ve found on upper body injuries. I have a strained pec now (not even comparable to a full pec tear) but the EQ pec stretch has helped me tremendously. A full pec tear is serious and pretty rare so you really have to take your time with it.

I just found out today i tore my peck from my doctor. My right peck. The reason being is I didn’t know how to bench.I still don’t it hurts my shoulder more and its swollen right were it connects to the peck. I have full mobility she was surprised how mobile i can reach opposite shoulder blades, extend my arms over head, and hold them out vertically while she pushed down no pain no problem. She recommended I see an orthopedist though my grandpa is dermatologist he told me to just rest for a month see what happens before i talk to them I’m a senior in college so Im not dealing with manual labor anymore and just lift for fun but it hurts after i do push ups. The first day it hurt after one pushup. The fifth day it hurt after 5 its getting better. Today its been a week since my last heavy set. I wish I saw the Dave Tate video before this happened. My routine on bench before the tear was heavy Tuesday speed Saturday. Tuesday Thursday was my military press day. My best heavy lifts before the tear went like this warmup (135x5) (225x5) 1st set 280x5 then (295x3 3rd 295 was o shit moment and before this it was always 290x3) I kept lifting anyway I go down about 15 pounds from my first 5 rep and it was 265x5 260x5 255x5 250x5 245x5 225 super slow x5. For speed my best was 260x8 250x8 245x7 burn out 185. Looking back its been bothering me for a month. I kept lifting. The Saturday after the o shit moment i kept lifting. I hit my normal numbers then 260x8 250x8 245x7 then Tuesday I said since i nailed the 280 and the 295x3 ill start with 285 i only got 3. It hurt so I went back down 265x5 260x5 ect all the way down to slow 225. It hurt the whole time both Tuesdays and Saturday. When it hurt to turn the staring wheel after last tuesday i knew i was fucked. Its either I accidentally flared my elbows or its from always using the squat cage and having to lift then swing to get the bar off the rack. Or it is from too heavy and going down to fast I always go down at nipple line or below though. I also was a retard in that I hadn’t took more then one day off from the gym out of my 3 day a week routine in more then 18 months. The doctor told me I can do any lifts that don’t hurt but only do 50%. Im 225 pounds but only 59 my body fat is high according to my neck minus my gut and my belly button its like 45 and my neck is 19 so its like 26. The only exercises i think i dont suck at are the bench and the mp my max bench was 315 nothing to brag about but to me it was the one thing that i loved and it made me feel good not to sound like a fag. When i first started lifting other then a weight lifting class in highschool my max bench was 185x5 about 18 months ago like i said it was 315 before the injury. My max military press was 180x5 I suck at squatting i do 135x7 (185x5)x3 then 135x7 i never dead lifted before im no fucking pro lifter but i dont want to turn more into mush. As it is i already have fucking man boobs and im 23 ive never had a six pack. Can some one recommend me some exercises to not lose my power, oh by the way my arms are at 18 inches cold now and 19 after workout i guess never measured after workout. How can i preserve strength loose fat and keep my arms big while only going 50%. Also she told me to go 50% but if my military press doesn’t bother me im going balls to the fucking wall until the bar smashes some since into my skull. Any programs that would benefit me our any one with a similar experience or some one who trained someone with this injury how did it effect your numbers how much strength did you lose. Don’t get me wrong im excited to try to lose weight and look better but I still feel shitty about potentially loosing all that hard work. I know this is my fault and what i get for being a bench bitch. Please give me program that might help preserve some of my strength while using the 50% guideline.

your friend vagina lifter 420

go to an orthopedist. listening to advice from a dermatologist is like asking a hobo how the stock market is doing

I WILL IT WILL TAKE A MONTH to see em IN THE MEAN TIME YOU GOT A PROGRAM FOR ME WITH THE 50% BROTHA? Or any info on how a month or two idle will effect my numbers?

agree x100…dude you shouldnt be doing anything if you think your pec is torn/ruptured…you need to find a better orthopedist or something the one we went to got me in for an appointment the day my mom called (monday, injury happened 2 days earlier on friday, ortho isnt in on weekends…) and they operated the next day because of the severity of the injury. im sure someone will see you right away. a pec tear is not a laughing matter and the quicker you get it fixed the better chance you have at a full and speedy recovery.

thanks for the concern maybe ill just stick to jerking. The more research I do the less I think its a pec tear. I never bruised. I have full range of motion with no pain but it just hurts to do a push up. But i have a layer of fat over my tits as it is maybe it wouldnt bruise. Im not too fit. So would it bruise? My doctor said shed call with a referral to the ortho and she told me to go only 50% on everything and stop what hurts. My mother who is an RN works at a retirement home. The ortho there suggested it was a micro tear or severe strain because if it was a tear id always be in pain. IDK man its killing me not being able to workout. As it is the next day after i tore it i caught bronchitis so i wasnt planning on going to the gym until im off the antibiotics for that. The one benefit is the zpack for my bronchitis brought the swelling down. Like i said threes no visible tear. But idk if there would be your advice is probably right man. Now i just feel like im gonna turn into a metro skinny bitch kid.

What would you do to try to prevent atrophy in the mean time?
id hate to think my c cups will turn into d’s.

BTW And i just ordered a kick ass blunderbuss so if i fuck my self up more i plan to commit suicide by blunderbuss maybe some silverware but i think something thats more gymish would be better. If you cant think of anything to prevent atrophy think of something symbolic that you can find in a gym that i can pack in there I plan to do it in the pool during water areobic class at my ymca.

I think that would be the only epic end

sincerely and with love

o btw jlederach did you have mobility before surgery. Maybe im just a big vagina and its only a strain but pushups hurt so i dont do em. Also becuase i kept working out for 2 weeks after the oh shit movement through the pain there was no loss in strength.to me.

well if it’s not bruised and you have full range of motion without pain then i would say it’s not torn. mine was bruised like hell and there was visible detachment, meaning a huge indention where the pectoral muscle it to stretch across the shoulder to its connection on the humerus. it sounds like you probably just pulled or have slightly torn muscle fibers. the best way to heal strains/pulls/minor tears is rest at first, and then doing exercises normally that dont aggravate the injury. it’s important to keep moving while you’re trying to heal so that blood is flowing through the site of the injury delivering nutrients and such. i would still see a doctor and request and MRI though.

According to the fucking ortho its probably an “ac strain 1” but i heard that shit pop too he said type 1 AC strain but if it still hurts to do pushups in four weeks something else is wrong. The only thing he did was twist my arms over my head first my good one then my bad one. The thing is and he noticied im not a symetrical my left side is wider then my right and my left trap is twice the size of my right he noticed my rigth trap was washed out too.
He told me to go easy for 6 weeks

He asked my max bench i told him 315 x2 or 295x3 or 280x 5 which ever is considerd more I told him i wanted to hit 400

he told me that was attainable

im not to impressed with his opinion i saw him for five minutes my insurance doesnt require i need a referal and my copays only 20% the fucker charged me 25$ I cant beleive he will get 125 for 5 mins of his time
