Have you tried unilateral work to build your squat up?
Maybe insert some Split Squats into your workouts for a few weeks, increasing the weight each week. I’m sure Court or myself could dig up one of her earlier workouts where she used to be off balance and curse at me when supersetting Front Squats and BSS. I’d say about a year ago she was probably Front Squatting 30 or 40lbs and did BSS without weight. Now she’s got tree trunk legs and can squat 225+.
Just an approach to think about.
Ugh I actually looked at that old workout last night when I was digging through to find something to do. It was about 6 months ago cuz I didn’t venture over to the weights til end of January. I know you’re putting a lot of focus onto BJJ right now, but if you want it let me know. I’ll send a picture of Todd with it so you can swear at him like I used to. It makes you feel better :)[/quote]
Yeah, I guess it’s a matter of wanting to have my cake and eat it too (though fuck cake). My primary is BJJ, the strength training is there because I like it. Can I rock at both without killing myself?
I’ve only got two days a week where I can make it to the weight room, it’s why I’m going with basic lifts. Any suggestions for two day a week programs would be great. It’d be interesting to see the program that made Court the beast she now is too.
Oh, and I’m sorry for the slew of whiney posts lately. I’ve been cranky, and I’m not really sure why.

You can do both without killing yourself. Rocking at both will likely bring you near death. You’re pushing your body in two different ways and it needs its breaktime too. Not to mention working and trying to have a social life. It can get overwhelming, I know.
When I was training for my race, I was training to do well and finish it but I also wanted to lose weight. I got all the pep talks in the world (and by pep talks I mean telling me how it is) from Todd and I decided my number one priority was my race. And if I lost weight at the same time, great.
With you, BJJ is number one and if you can MAINTAIN strength in the meantime with limited gym strength training time, excellent. But I’d be shocked if you were hitting any PRs the way you’re pushing your body with BJJ as well.

This was what we had Court doing for her lower body/ab day back in January.
Grouping Exercise Sets Reps Weight Used Rest
A1 Front Squats 4 12 none
A2 Bulgarian Split Squats 4 24 60s
B1 Leg Press - Wide Stance 4 12 none
B2 Leg Press - Close Stance 4 12 60s
C1 Stiff Leg Deadlift 4 6 none
C2 Seated Leg Curl 4 12 60s
D Single Leg Calf Raises 3 10 10s
E1 Seated Russian Twists w/ Medicine Ball 3 10 per side none
E2 Side Planks 3 15s per side 60s
Ignore the weight used part, or Court will fill you in on it.
Last night’s class was vale tudo self defense. What to do if someone picks a fight and trys to punch. You either want to be too far for him to reach or in the clinch. Once in the clinch you want the t position. From there what you do depends on him, if he pushes into you, you figure four a leg and take him down. If he pushes away hip toss. I love the hip toss, and hate the figure four.
We then did some free rolling. I rolled with Brandon (the kid I tapped) and he kicked my ass. I need to figure out the best timing for Surge and Spike, so that my energy peaks at rolling time. Last night I was just gassed.
When I’m feeling low energy, I’m hesitant to roll with the other guys. Brandon’s sitting at 150, so he’s not much heavier than me. Everyone else though is around 175-230. I don’t know, should I just be sucking it up more?
On a side note I dated a big guy (6’2 220) for years and am just now appreciating how much effort guys must put into keeping their weight off of you. I honestly didn’t realize how much 220 lbs on you sucks until Doug (our big blue belt) had me in side control.
I then asked a bunch of random questions to fill in gaps in my game.

That looks fun/ extremely painful, but I just don’t think I can take it at this point. I’m sticking to two TBT days for now. If I start to feel like I can move without my body notifying me of it’s existence, I may look at adding other things.
I normally lurk, but just wanted to say I LOVE your log - totally addicted to it. It’s better than any of those stupid soap operas. It’s got love and plenty of good ol’ violence to soothe the soul! What more would a girl want to keep up with! :^P

That’s probably some of it.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Ugh…Robert Frost. Had to memorize and recite far too many of his poems for English classes in HS.

I think that’s why it sticks in my head. Whenever I feel overwhelmed I think of the miles I have yet to go.

Thanks! Are you a fighter too?
It’s nice to know my endless chatter isn’t tiring people.
A little less talk
If you please
A lot more loving
Is what I need
Lets get on down
To the main attraction
With a little less talk
And a lot more action
TKD - although I should elaborate. It’s ITF and not like the Olympic style. It truly is a combination of hands and feet. Currently a brown belt and hope to get my black belt in this next year. After that, it’s a toss up - I’d like to do Combat Hapkido b/c it is strictly self defense and actually would fit very well with what I know, but would also like to add a ground game (which makes me think of BJJ).
And, of course, I’d like to do weapons (know a little with the cane) so before I die some kungfu (plus I think the redirection would be good for someone of my size)… Some of this depends on where I end up from Germany - targeting CO Springs. I’d much rather go to a good instructor and worry less about the particular discipline. Yikes, a dissertation!

Sounds fun, so then do you compete or are you just looking to be a badass? I’m also kinda wondering about the shift on self defense, can you not use your TKD as self defense? Also, have you ever been in a situation where you’ve had to fight?
Sticks do look so very cool. What’s your size?
I agree completely with this - a great art with a sucky instructor is a sucky art.
I’ve competed, but am more interested in being a badass. :^P Like forms, would rather do better at fighting. Got more drive than sense sometimes…
I wouldn’t call it a shift for self defense as much as adding to my knowledge and further developing it. TKD has given me a good base, Combat Hapkido would further enhance that and I wouldn’t have to also learn more forms, combinations, kicking drills, one steps, etc, etc, etc.
Fortunately, I haven’t had to fight. Interestingly, as a part of my black belt test, I must talk my way out of 5 situations rather than fight.
I’m pretty thin at 5’6" and 110 pounds. Looking to put on about 10 pounds not much more since it would mess with my speed.
