It has been said already, but I really think folks are reading too much into the “unofficial” record tagline. Broz was probably just incredibly amped that his athlete did something no other American has every done in any setting. Hard to believe he got excited about one of his students accomplishing something no American has ever done before in or out of competition, what with the use the use of straps and all, but some people are just emotional guys you know.

Every serious competitive weightlifter I have ever seen trains the snatch with straps, period. Please also bear in mind he was training for a meet, he was not trying to hit a competition replica lift at that moment in time.

Just give the kid a break, he will compete when he is ready. Again, every other country in the world does this, their athletes just aren’t as high profile as Mendez is before they compete. [/quote]

As I said before I understand why he was wearing straps. And to be fair one of his other videos quotes him as being the strongest teenager in the world.

I’m just of the opinion he should be like the lifters in the other countries if he’s not planning on competing anytime soon. Just lay low, lift hard then explode on to the world scene. Rather than not do any comps, yet still trying to get a massive hype about him.

I’m not american so maybe I have less of an attachment to him than some of you guys. Personally I’m more interested in seeing pendlay’s lifters. It’s great they frequently post training vids, they talk on forums, have a blog and it’s nice to see their progress in competitions.

I’m going to stop posting now. I don’t mean any ill will towards broz and his lifters. I wish them all the best of luck in the future and I hope they do achieve great things, as said before I am looking forward to pat smashing it in competition!

Fair enough. I am sure Broz probably just wants to keep Pat motivated and thus the videos and pressure. To give up your youth and train like that would be hard to keep up for years on end. Now let’s see if this kid can become truly world class and replicate it where it matters the most.

I hope Broz continues to post vids of the massive lifts this kid hits…as I love to watch them, I ALSO hope he hits some big lifts in competition soon too, I am a fan…is that too much to ask?

I emailed John a few weeks ago and asked if if I could come to his gym and train for a few days. With limited experience and pathetic numbers I really didn’t think he would have any time for me. Before I knew it we had arranged a 5 day “training camp” suitable to both our schedules. Memories of the last 5 days will last with me till they cover me in dirt.

Physically John was way more impressive than I expected. The man has become a beast from all the years of training! He is Library of Weightlifting history with a knowledge and passion for the sport that touches the sky. However, he came across as a funny, easy going, open-minded guy with millions of interests besides weightlifting. I think we were destined to hit it off when I boasted about great Canadian music Artists. He laughed and immediately pointed out the RUSH poster he has hanging on the wall, which i honestly had not noticed LOL.

Anyway, it would take me paragraph after paragraph to fully describe the experience. I did get to meet Pat and a bunch of the other lifters there. They were quick to flash a big grin and extend a welcoming hand. I fully recommend any Olympic Weightlifting lovers to contact John and arrange a visit.

Sam

great stuff Sam!

you must have felt like I did way back in the early 1990’s when I spent a couple of weeks in Columbus Ohio at Westside Barbell, and was one on one coached by Louis Simmons.

I had a joy-gasm, I am sure this was a similar experience!

also, your pic with Mendez…he is so not an imposing physical specimen…but damn…you were standing right next to one of the strongest men on the planet.

I am sure it is the exact same feeling! It must have been amazing meeting Louie back then! It really was an honor chatting with Pat and he is built in such a unique, amazing way. I’m a pretty big guy at 6’, 235, but he made me feel pretty mortal. If Hollywood ever made a movie about Paul Anderson, no one would suit the lead better!!!

damn…your 6’ 235#? damn, how tall is Broz…what does he weigh?

When I said John was “a beast from all the years of training” I really wasn’t kidding man LOL! He said he was 6’ 3", I think he said he was around 270ish?? Hard to remember exactly when both pounds and Kilos were thrown around throughout the five day discussions. Pat is a bit shorter than me but I felt like he must be 50 lbs heavier and very solid. He may look smaller in that pic because of the camera angle. I never asked exactly but I certainly found him to be a big imposing figure!

BTW before we took the picture I begged John to make Pat take the straps off. Apperantly, he wears those things dangling at his wrists every where he goes??? John said he can’t drive without strapping his hands to the stearing wheel! Kinda sad but he is just a kid, so i am sure he will grow out of it

Good to hear Sam.

Koing

Pat competed at this years Arnold’s. I was there and saw him live. Didn’t see him snatching but got his C&Js on video. Apparently he finished with 175/205.

This is him doing 205 C&J. He missed 217 twice.

its actually 207

Yeah I already noticed. My mistake

I bought some shoes at the booth there and saw him warming up. I wanted to go in and watch, but my asshole friends made me leave. Good to see him competing.

I thought it would be interesting to note that he just competed again at the world championships in Paris.

He snatched 187kg. While this is still a MONSTER number for whatever reason he cannot transfer his training lifts to the platform…

Yeah, Pat came up briefly in the worlds start list thread. Disappointing to see him bomb out in the clean and jerk. Oh, and he snatched 172, not 187.

For whatever reason? its not that hard to decipher.

Well I think it’s pretty obvious but I’m not here to accuse anyone. I don’t really care if he is using, it’s just dissapointing.

I don’t care if you are or are not dissapointed, I am. Guy has a bright future and had a good chance to place at the next olympics. To me, that’s petty cool, an American who medals at the olympics in weightlifting. If it doesn’t bother you I’d say you don’t care that much about your country or the sport.
