Here is a question for all you kinesiologists or physiotherapists out there (I’m a neuroscience/physiology major so this is somewhat out of my league) or for anyone else who has ever suffered this problem. Whenever I do heavy bench (more from normal grip but also from close grip) I get a pain in the area of my chest/arm, right where the bicep connects to the chest. I get this pain mainly near the bottom of the eccentric portion of the lift. It feels like its comming from an area in the chest/arm thats responsible for stabalizing the weight on the way down. This pain makes it difficult to do bench for more then 3 weeks consecutively. Any suggestions on what might be causing this and more importantly what kind of exercises to do to strengthen up this area? Thanks for the help.
It sounds like it could just be some tendonitis. Try some anti-inflamm’s along with rest and ice and see if it goes away. Lay off the movements that hurt and see how it feels in a few weeks.
You should ask on the Dave Tate message board. At elite fitness.
I’ve had that pain over this summer, right where the deltoid meets the pec. Screwed up my bench big time. I cut out flyes/cable crossover and took a narrower grip and my bench is back to normal.
I just had this problem, it’s possible you tore some of the connective tissue that holds the bicep down to the humerus, but you complain of the chest tie in. The bicep really doesn’t insert near the chest so much as the shoulder, but you should get it checked out, and probably stop benching heavy three times a week cuz that’s not the best idea either.
