How big would the individual have to be?

Yes, comparing Shelby to a beginner or even intermediate level lifter makes a lot of sense…?

He is above the intermediate level. He also knows more about nutrition than any of us.

If gaining muscle as quickly as some of you propose it is, is true lets see it. Shit, every intermediate and below should be gaining 50 lbs a year then.

I think starting out you can gain maybe 7 or 8% of your body weight in muscle. After that you are lucky to gain a lb every 2 months.

50lbs a year? I wrote that I went from 150 to about 200lbs in less than two years. According to you, this was impossible and I simply gained mostly fat.

Do you understand the concept of genetic differences? Do you assume everyone grows at the same rate YOU do?

Untwisting your words in quite a chore, but I will.
You gained 50 lbs in two years AS A NOOB. We’re not talking about noobs here. The OP’s been lifting a while.
We’re also talking about MUSCLE, not body weight.

So, 2lbs per month is possible especially at your bf level.

You have no clue what my body fat level was ten years ago or more. I gained about 20lbs a year for the first five years on average (there were periods of dropping weight mixed in with me hitting the higher weight and surpassing it several times). Most of that was muscle and obviously some of it was body fat. Had I known ANYTHING back then about how important protein intake was or had any money to afford any protein supplements, I am sure I would have made better progress.

How do you think the really big guys got big? You thought they were born that way? They would take 50 years to get big if they listened to you.

The people with the genetics for this will grow faster than those without the ability.

x 2
I’m a little late to this thread, but I can use myself as an example here. Up until May 2010, I had really not focused on bodybuilding, but more strength sports etc and had built a pretty good physique through that. I have since then decided to give bodybuilding my full attention, meaning my eating has changed, training, etc. I went from 200-205 at that time to 230 now and although I am not as lean as I was, I probably have gained 20 + pounds of muscle in that time (a little more than 6 months). I wouldn’t consider myself an beginner, intermediate, as I had been lifting for 4 + years up until then.

Although my gains are not absurd, I think I put on a good deal of mass/muscle in a relatively short period of time even though I had been training for a while and my strength was at a pretty high level. I just think you have to look at everyone differently.

Wrong. The OP mentioned that the guy said that “A person” can only gain about 2 lbs of muscle total over 3 months.

How much do you eat in total and how much protein do you eat in a day? How much do you weigh? What does your routine look like (throughout 2010) and what gains have you made in the gym in 2010? What numbers are you putting up? Height? Are you gaining weight/how much weight? Are you drug free and trying to stay very lean year 'round?

Oh please. I worked out with a 400lb strongman today whose probably half again as strong as you are. I am also friends with more than one world recording holding powerlifter, most of which would make you look small. So if anything, my definition of huge would be to extreme for these purposes.

I don’t think so. I might be, can’t be sure but as far as I understood it the discussion went like this:
X: Please find me someone who got big/strong by only gaining for three months at a time.
Me: How big and strong?
X: You’ve never seen big and strong.
Me: whut yes I have
X: You are missing the point.

Where am I not following what you are saying?

What? I just said if they are fat as all hell then that is not the “HUGE” we are talking about. I even gave you a guideline to go by.

You know several guys my size and bigger who got that way by only gaining for 3 months at a time?

Really?

Oh you mean that way. Well, no I don’t think they are more than 25% BF. Prolly hovering around 18% for the most part. I haven’t calipered them, but they are definitely the kind of huge that is relevant to this discussion.
SPORTLÍF TEAM-IÐ: 300kg í réttstöðulyftu! Fimm sinnum! - YouTube This guy is pretty big, right?
Benedikt Magnusson Raw Deadlift WR 442,5kg! - YouTube So is this one.
So I believe we’ve established that I have met and trained with huge guys. This was besides the point really.
But no, I don’t know several guys your size or bigger that got that way by gaining for only three months at a time, nor did I ever claim to. I simply asked how big/strong someone would have to be to qualify for the purposes of your question.
