One Year of Preparation

When some has a ‘glass jaw’ does that just mean they have a weak neck?

yes you can do something similar… as always the program itself is kind of a moot point just get stronger but there’s always things that will be better for you specifically.

I’d reccomend going through a few Alwyn Cosgrove articles on fatloss, can’t remember which ones specifically off the top of my head…

Anyway in your situation, maintain (and increase some) strength through lifting and use (primarily) your diet to get leaner. I’d sprinkle in some sprints and metabolic conditioning (complexes, circuits, etc) once or twice a week to increase your metabolism. Overall just raising your energy expenditures during the day (morning walk, evening walk, take the stairs instead of elevator) can do a lot as well considering you’re not lean but you’re not super duper fat either.

you know that getting ‘shredded’ is primarily diet. Depending how quickly you’d like to get lower bodyfat determines what you should do.

Depends on your current strength levels as well, how long you’ve been lifting, and few other factors.

Right now I am eating more for bulking. I lifted all throughout highschool but never made huge gains or losses in the fat department until I got serious around April this year. I lost 18 lbs, from 212… I am now 194. Like I said, I’ve started a mass building phase just this week and plan on going about a whole year doing this.

Other factors, I’ve got asthma… it doesn’t bother me that much when sparring… its more of an allergy thing. I’ve got tendinitis of the knee right now so I can’t run, but I can do stair climbers and biking… My diet is relatively healthy, but I want a way to cut down on sat. fats… right now I’m getting a moderately healthy wrap for lunch, that I make…

1 small flour tortilla
2 slices turkey
1 slice ham
1 piece of American cheese (bad, what else can I put on here?)

^^ It tastes like a hot pocket but without the 900,000,000 calories. So I like it, but I know its not that great…

Post Workout I drink a smoothie with 6 strawberries, 1 cup whey protein, 1 banana… 1 cup milk and some artificial vanilla flavoring in it… pretty good for post workout if you ask me.

I really need help on the diet most of all, I know what is good but I’ve got limited funds right now so I could use some advice. I’d like to lean out through diet while making massive gains… Most of my fat is chest/sides and a lot of it is subcutaneous…

I really have to differ to someone else on the subject of diet its never been a problem of mine and I just naturally don’t gain that much bodyfat. the only times i have all I had to do was increase my conditioning and i’d shed lbs. On the flip side i have to overeat like a motherfucker to put on any weight.

In theory, a bigger neck means that tub of lard (a brain is almost all fat) won’t spin around as quickly when hit.

So, yeah, working the neck is important. I do it. But having a big neck ain’t going to turn your glass jaw into stone.

In practice, some guys can just take a shot. Just like some guys can jump higher and run faster than others. No neck training in the world is going to give you Big Nog’s “chin.”

No… some guys can take a shot and some can’t.

If you’ve ever been hit really hard you know there’s only so much you can do… it ain’t really up to you if you go out.

That’s why I get a kick out of those Rocky movies… if you were as fucked up as him you’d never get up. When shit’s spinnin most guys are done.

What can I do to prepare for next year? I plan on doing muay thai and BJJ.

Any advice is much appreciated.[/quote]

Nothing at all :o Not even judo or boxing :o

I would avoid trying to learn from books or videos - they are good suplements to lessons but not a substitute. Generally for MT / BJJ you need strength (both short burst and sustained muscular endurance), flexability (throwing head high kicks with power is difficult!) and really don’t stint on the endurance work - you won;t believe how long 2 minutes can be till you are sparring!

A mix of heavy weights, full body circuit training, running (distance and sprints) and swimming (ditto) and lots of stretching maybe?

Updating for anyone who cares.

I just found out a boxing gym is opening here this September.

I’m stoked on this, although I’ll have to work more to pay for it.

Yeah, that’s what bothers me about most boxing movies. I saw Cinderella Man and just one of the shots either received would have put them down in a real fight.

I disagree with learning from videos. Books tend to suck because they can’t show the movement, but if you have someone to work with, I think videos can be an excellent way to learn technique. I learn slow, so I like to see the move demonstrated over and over.

Eventually, videos are not sufficient because you will get to a point where you need a trainer watching you and picking out errors, but they are excellent technique intros, imo.

there must be a judo school around. where do you live?

I agree with the Bas Rutten dvd’s. They are extremely good. Also all the stuff can be practiced with a friend or on your own as you just rewind/play…rewind/play to get the moves right.

OMC

i agree with many of the posters here…there’s also a thread around here somewhere of the best exercises for MMA.

one thing i would say will help the most is developing hip and rotaional strength. since i was about 15, i always did lying hip swings (or whatever ya call them), i seem to have much more rotaional power than everyone else in my BJJ class. deadlift like a mofo, too…

also, i learned muay thai on my own…i spent about 6 months on karate and tired of it, and just got a heavy bag and trained on my own, with a couple muay thai training videos. i will say this, though…muay thai is not necessarily right for MMA. the stance is differeant, and combos are shorter in MMA, otherwise you’ll get taken down.
