One rep max?

This site is fanfuckingtastic. I thought I knew a lot about working out but I was sadly mistaken. There is so much information here its crazy. Thank devil for this site. Now to my question.

I was wondering what’s the best way to figure one’s one rep max?

… er, go to the gym and lift it.

Here ya go:

“I was wondering what’s the best way to figure one’s one rep max?”

To lift as much weight as you can for one rep?

Charts are stupid. If you can’t actually do your calculated 1RM then it isn’t your 1RM!

My three RM usually runs about 92% of my one RM,
but everyone is different.

I’m going to assume that by “figuring out” you mean, “How do I warm up properly for a max effort attempt?” Check out the articles below. They list warm-up weights for certaing opening weights at a powerlifting meet. There, they are only concerned about lifting the most weight possible in one rep.

I thought this forum was free from trolls and internet losers but alas… Dave shows me that I was wrong.

I was asking this question because A) I read a few times and was told that its dangerous to max out on one rep because of the risk of injury. B) If this was the case how do people figure it out. Do they use 3 reps, 5 reps or whatever.

Thanks for the link Mike. That helped. Unfortunately people try to make themselves feel better by trying to put people down. Im sure Dave was doing this to make himself feel better because of his lack of penis size.

I don’t see how it’s dangerous to attempt a max if you know how to lift right, seriously. Sometimes shit happens, but then again, sometimes shit happens when you’re walking down the street :stuck_out_tongue:

But in all seriousness, the only number that matters is what you actually lifted.

True Neil. Now reading the linked article that Mike provided me I see that it is ok to one rep 100%. The only problem I see is the spotter excuse. I will just have to find someone to help. I workout at a “Health Club” rather than a gym so its tough to find someone that will offer assistance without an attitude or someone that is under 75 years old.

go to a meet.

Here’s three quotes you guys.

“I was wondering what’s the best way to figure one’s one rep max?”
“… er, go to the gym and lift it.”

Consider this:

If you train Westside, you max twice a week, every week.

Yeah, I found that article not only helpful, but pretty interesting as well.

And, no PGA, this site isn’t free of trolls. Or smartasses, for that matter.

I should know, because I tend to toss out a useless, smartass remark once in awhile. But I do try to temper them with occasional helpful advice, too.

Best bet is to develop a thick skin, and then either ignore any smartass comments, or hit 'em right back with one of your own. Kinda like your “penis” retort.

You do have it right, though, about the volumes of free information on this site. Hell, I have a three-ring binder full of awesome information that I’ve printed out over a period of time!

Welcome to the Jungle.

i dont think dave was tryin to clown you, he was just sayin best way to figure it is to get under it and try.
peace, flash

Mike I have very thick skin. I just didnt want to get into a battle of words. I have done it before on other boards where people try and take a stab at me. I take it up another notch then I get banned. I guess it was just a minor pinch at me and I took a stab back so I guess we’re even.

use a power rack or boxes as a safety percaution if not using spotters. obviously with boxes if you just dump the weight the bar could roll off, so use your smarts …

PGA, it truly isn’t worth the effort to defend your anonymous honor, as it were. Pissing battles serve only to water the grass.

“I was wondering what’s the best way to figure one’s one rep max?”

THIS was your question.

"… er, go to the gym and lift it. "

THIS was a perfectly viable answer.

“I was asking this question because A) I read a few times and was told that its dangerous to max out on one rep because of the risk of injury. B) If this was the case how do people figure it out. Do they use 3 reps, 5 reps or whatever.”

THIS added many elements to your first question. I almost want to say makes it a different question. You wanted to know how to calculate your 1RM without actualy lifting it, or wanted to get a good idea of what you should shoot for etc. ALL great peices of information that should have been provided initialy.

"Unfortunately people try to make themselves feel better by trying to put people down. Im sure Dave was doing this to make himself feel better because of his lack of penis size. "

This was uncalled for. I doubt dave felt any better post reply. Hell I bet he felt worse after wasting his time replying to your mindless post (a question which could have been searched for).

YOU instigated this, Dave answered your question (before you were so kind to clarify for us).

“I guess it was just a minor pinch at me and I took a stab back so I guess we’re even.”

If what Dave did was indeed a “minor pinch” by your standards you sluged him back. It seems like either you owe Dave an apology, or he owes you a punch in the face.

On a forum filled with sarcastic bastards, I figured anyone with half a brain cell would have learnt the tone of such a reply.

Grow up. You’re the troll.

…but isn’t the grass LOVELY…?

Not to be a smartass, but I don’t think people were very harsh on you. Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting are about maxing out. You must attempt to do it safely. Benchs and squats usually require spotters. Deadlifts don’t obviously.

I hae found that keeping workout logs as a good way for me to figure out my max. The chats out there are worthless, but if you have record of how strong you are on reps and have a recent max, it’s easy to put it together.
