One-Arm Pull-Ups?

why are they so hard? i know that when u are able to do one u can usually pull-up with ur bodyweight in weights attached to you. example if i weight 160 then i wouldn’t expect to be able to do one until i can pull-up with 2 hands with 130-160lbs attached to me.

it seems that more people can bench press 2 times their bodyweight than can pull-up or chin-up twice their bodyweight by doing a one-arm pull-up or attaching the 160lbs to them if they weight 160. people say one armers are for the genetically gifted but not many say that about 2x bodyweight bencher’s am i right?

Im sure that with enough practice you’d be able to pull it off…

A rock climbing friend has been trying for years without success. Another pal can tie a dynamic line around his middle finger and do 15 of them. Genetics has at least something to do with that.

yeah someone on my ski team rock climbs a lot and he was training to do a 1 arm pullup, he got to 30 regular pullups and started doing them with 50 lbs between his feet, he just gave up though. I can do a one armed with my palms facing in if i hold my other arm but I’m pretty sure lots of people can.

  1. Work up to a nice poundage of weighted chins and pullups, that # should be about even (thats a mistake I made, be sure you can do both with the same weight, chins will always be slightly more but… try to make that deficit really small)

  2. Practice psuedo-1 arm pullups.Start by holding your wrist and doing 1 arm pullups like that. Slowly keep moving your hand down to your forearm, to the crook of your elbow, onto your bicep, onto your shoulder, your chest and then until you don’t need that hand anymore.

  3. Also practice one arm negatives.

I’ve always been good at chinups. When I was in grade school and we had that presidential fitness test to pass in PE class I always smoked the pullups by at least 5-7reps.

So perhaps it’s partially genetic but you never know your genetic potential to you put in the hard fucking work.

You can either work it hard as HELL 1-2 days a week, or (the better option) work it just a little bit everyday.

Do it first thing in your workout, and maybe wear neoprene sleeves during your warmup and during your other exercises… Cause you’ll really be risking tendonitis training 1 arm pullups and tendonitis is a biiiiiiiiiitch.

i had never been able to do a pull-up until last summer. (I’m 16)5’10 and weight 162. now i can max out on a chin-up with 65 lbs. so i figure about 8 months to a year and a half will be the time i’ll get it 8 months at the quickest, 1 year and a half at the longest. i have never gymless by ross enamait and their are progresssons in there and other sweeet stuff. something i think i have that is rare is that i can pull-up(bodyweight162+65=227lbs-arms=195-215lbs)and my bench is about 195-200, so i pull up more than my bench, but they are pretty close.

I can pullup waaayyy more than I can bench but I have pretty much no chest  and a big back

The bench press has the eccentric contraction before the concentric. This means that as you let the weight down, energy gets stored in your muscles in the form of elastic tension, which then gets released to help you push the weight up. In the pull-up, you start at the bottom - so there’s no extra force to help you get going.

Funny that you should say that, cause I was curious about if I could or not… so I jumped up and knocked two out with a neutral grip…surprised myself, actually.

I can do pullups for a couple reps +45, nothin special, but my back is strong and I got short arms.

bench and floor also give support. you don’t see alot of guys doing pushups or rowing w/405.

Thats why i’m more impressed with a large # overhead press.

If you you’re overhead pressing 3bills then thats the strength equivalent of a 1 arm chin to me.

Hrmm… When I could still do two arms I had a good 70-80 pounds on for 3-5 reps. Are those 2 with 1 hand and no assistance?

I’ve been working on it ever sense I dislocated my elbow. To “spot” I put my feet up on something behind me and try and push off less and less each workout. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m not pushing off at all and its just carrying some dead weight.

If you have 2 good arms I’d suggest the holding thing. If I fell doing those I’d crack my face and arm open.

go to beastskills.com.

this guy is a chin up specialist, he details all sorts of variations on pull-ups and chins, including one arm chins, hand stans and other cool bodywieght stuff.

^^Really helped me.

my post was a condensed form of what I learned from him and some mountain climbers.
