olympic weight plates for home

Hey everyone,

I’m getting a bench and squat cage for home and need to know of where I can get olympic plates with a modest investment. A friend of mine recommended I look at costco because they had an o-bar (probably not very good) but with 300lbs of weights for under $100.

This is $0.33 per pound which is much better than most catalog orders (which run .49 to .55 per pound) plus the huge cost of shipping 400 lbs of weight.

Also, what about bumper plates? Any ideas. Thanks!

Welllllll, your best bet for bumpers for the buck would probably be York. They have a new design which I train on and highly recommend. You could go cheaper and get Ivanko but these fall apart so easy its not funny. Uhhh lets see, oh yeah, there is a company in California named Mav-Rik and they make high quality plates with a fair price. If you’ve ever seen those old York bumpers that are made of a composite-type rubber, they are very wide and as such you can’t fit a lot of weight of the bar but they last forever, anyway that style of weight is I think made by Bigger Faster Stronger now. Don’t get suckered into buying the style that is a metal plate wtih a rubber strip around the perimeter, they will flat-out break even faster than the Ivankos. Those are the best brands-for-the-buck that I can think of.

Well in my area (Baltimore) we have Dick’s Sporting Goods - they frequently have sales for an olympic bar and 310 lbs. for $99. I have never bought plates, just bars and sets - seems to be cheaper that way. Gonna need some more soon thanks to all the great advice from T-Mag!!

I saw costco had a set for around $260 or so.
It came w/ a decent bench and 250# oly weights.
It might be listed on costco online.
