Olympic Gymnastics

Anyone happen to watch the Olympic gymnastics?

Those guys are jacked, no bs about their strength, esp this one pitbull for the US, (whose name escapes my mind) whose got triceps the size of cantalopes… I would imagine they dont do too much push type lifting (they probably have enough stress on the shoulders) but those guys have muscles and serious applicable strength… anyone here ever done gymnastics and can relay any sport specific training they’ve done for it?

I used to think that track & field runners had the best bodies, but these Gymnasts are freakin jacked! Also, check out those Rowing events, those dudes backs are beyond stacked! I’m sure none of these guys are doing tricep kickbacks or leg extensions.

I hate to admit it, but you are 100% right. Those guys could probably do some serious ass kicking in a fight.

I’m guessing almost all of their lifting is done as body weight movements. But these guys could probably do over-the-head presses without a wall for miles. You want to talk about stabalizer muscles? Dear God.

Their muscles are big and strong because they need to be.

If you can’t quite walk on your hands, but you keep trying several times a day, all day, all week, all life, then guess what…you’ll be able to walk on your hands.

Your body can either adapt or deteriorate.

Must we judge them by their potential in a fight?

All but one member of the team are between 5’4" and 5’6", and 140 and 160 lbs. They rank among the very best in lat, shoulder, and bicep development.

This is Jason Gatson, the US pitbull. He’s buffed up a bit more in the last few years to compensate for leg injuries. Impressive, eh?

They may lack the absolute power of an Olympic lifter, but in terms of overall athleticism, these guys are paragons.

These guys besides the speed, agility, dynamic strength and flexibility also have tremendous muscle endurance and static strength. The only thing they don’t have is aerobic stamina because that isn’t a requirement for their sport.
I love watching gymnastics for the sheer awesome spectacle of these guys performing the superhuman and making it looks so damned easy!

I should have stayed in gymnastics when I was young. I could have been like these guys now.

Poliquin has stated that many male gymnasts who have tried benching for the first time can usually do 315lbs or more without ever having lifted weights. He’s also talked about them deadlifting over 400lbs as well. It just goes to show you how much strength they develop through years and years of training.

Yuri Cheki (sp) from Italy is a monster on the rings. I watched him when gold in 1996. His arms are incredible and make Jason Gatson look small, and he’s 34 years old and still competing. Even Alexi Nemov from Russia has packed on more size since 1996 and 2000.

They are incredible athletes. I’m also looking forward to seeing some Olympic weightlifting!

hmm does any one think the leg strength could come from all those altitude landings from landing their routines,

Sprinting, plyos and constant static holds will make the legs strong too.

Creed: Aerobic capacity is a MUST. It may not be needed for all events but you need the lung power to keep going for floor, pommel horse, ring and bar routines. Vaulting is probably the least aerobically taxing but most of the others are killers

Nate Dogg,
post a pic of the Cheki guy, I’m having a hard time imagining anyone 5’5 making gatlin look small (esp after that picture above).

No!
But that is a decent way to build power. Strength on the other hand comes from very hard/smart work in the gym.

Dude most of those gymnasts utilize O?lifting to improver there strength-speed and power endurance. However there are a couple of gymnast that utilize the conjugate system as well. Also body weight training can be very beneficial to a gymnast as long as It’s used properly.

Dude get it through your head it’s not the size of the fighter that matters but his skill level. For an example look at the gracies there not the biggest fighters not even muscular (by T-Nation standards) but very technical proficient, that’s way they win fits because they out skill there opponents not out-muscle them. If you’ve ever gotten in a real NHB fighting match with a bigger opponent you would understand this.

I was talking about poliquin saying that gymnasts first attempts at deadlifts are over 400 from his observations…

Why? Why do you bring this up? What does this have do with anything?

We’ve had this out SO MANY times. I swear, it’s like a dickwaving contest with some of you. Fighting is about the dumbest solution to any problem faced by modern man, and certainly the absolute last thing on the mind of any Olympic gymnast. The fundamental basis for the Olympics is a mutual desire to lay aside arms!

If you’d like to talk the usual nonsense about Gracies, Shamrocks, bears, lions, and whatever the irrelevant fuck, make your own thread.

Mod Note: See the “Olympic Gymnastics Strength Building Routine” thread in this forum, for information on how they developed their bodies.

that’s insane to think some of them little 14 year old girls can deadlift 400 pounds

i think they were referring to the 19 or 20 year old guy gymnsts… i’d shit my pants, twice over, if i saw someone like Courtney McCool (whose got the coolest fucking name in gymnastics)deadlift 400 lbs… speaking of the female gymnasts… I’m absolutely in love with Bwardji (spelling)… the one that got money from Pam Anderson to go to the games… the things i would like to do to her… (t-vixens, excuse my schovinism)

yeah dude, I know

But it’d be a hell of a site to see
