Older Guy, Newbie Question

Sorry for the confusion guys. Yes the lifts are in kilos. Sorry its just force of habit. My bad.

I considered your weights in kilos and that you’re fairly strong already.
You’ve set goals based on both your workout results and what you think you can do.

My opinion remains the same.

Is hitting those numbers realistic or possible for your age? Yes absolutely.

How long will it take? No one knows, every lifter is individual and theres no way of telling if you plateau soon or what other things might happen. You could possibly hit those numbers in three months or it could take you two years or more depending on a host of variables.

Just stay focused and keep adding to you numbers via your program. You’ll get there when you get there.

Thanks for the info gents. Its good to know that what I hoping for is realistic. I have to admit hitting those numbers in three or six months sounds better than in one year. But I’m not greedy. As said above I’ll get there when I get there. Is the Texas method as good a way ad any to try for this?

The Texas method is good, the Wendler method is good, the Dan John methods are good, the Westside method is good, the Madcow method is good. The methods that are not good are mainly the ones that are tried and given up on after only done partially or for too short a period of time. I think the best advice is to choose a proven method like one mentioned above and stick with it for a year or more. Make sure to track your results and pay attention to your progress and you will succeed.

Thanks again to all that replied. I will stick with TM and see how far I can get with it. I’ll try to read more and learn as I go, but looking at some of the guys on here I sometimes think “what’s the point, you’re warming up with my target weights!!” Lol.

Well i think you have done a great job for no longer that you have been lifting.

Thanks again for the help and advice.
I thought I would post an update. So far I am at:
Bench 112.5 x 5 (248lbs)
Squat 165 x 5 (363lbs)
Deadlift 185 x 6 (407lbs)

What I have been doing is using the brzycki formula working up to the weight at 5 reps.
When I get to
Bench 124 x 5 (273)
Squat 178 x 5 (392)
Dead 204 x 5 (451)
In theory I should be able to do the 1rm I am aiming for.
Then I plan to focus on triples, doubles and singles to hit the target weight.

I don’t know if this is the best way to do it or not but it gives me something to shoot for.

I found that the Texas method deadlifting once a week wasn’t really doing anything for me so I added 5x5 on a Monday, the same as the bench and squat.
That got it moving again but Mondays session is now really really hard going.
This Monday it was
5x5 @ 170kg deads then
5x5 @ 105kg bench then
5x5 @ 140kg Squats.
I was really drained after that and I’m still sore.

I may need to switch that around again.

Squat was going well until two weeks ago. Going for a new weight on the Friday I felt something pull in my left quad. That really freaked me out as I had 170kg on my back at the time. The weird thing is what worried me most was how long I would have to stop training for.
Anyway it was ok, just a minor muscle pull caused by a poor warm up. I’m back squatting again, building back up slowly as that feeling is still in the back of my mind!
I have noticed that my 5rm is not moving up as quickly as the 5x5 numbers. If it carries on like this I will be doing 5x5 with the same weight as my 1x5!
I know that’s not the way its meant to be.

Anyway I am getting there slowly only a few more kg’s to go then I will be back looking for advice on how to focus towards the singles.

Good post. I was wondering how this was going.

I think you can do wonders honestly.I’m 61 and have constantly been uping my weights until last December when I stayed the same, some well meaning people kept saying at my age it’s most likely all i’ll ever do.Well, spring came and all of a sudden i’m hefting much more. Now doing over 300 lbs on shrugs.Keep at it and listen to your body, not others!

Well another update. Not long after the last update I wandered off TM. I started doings sets of eights and accessory work. I even tried a program that was so far ahead of where I’m at I had to stop after a couple of weeks.
Pretty much made every rookie mistake in one go!
I tested my maxes a couple of weeks ago to see where I was at. Not one kg above where they were!

Result? I wasted three months training and got nothing out of it! I can kinda laugh it off now but it pissed me off at first when I realised what I’d done.
Anyway I started back on TM last night. I had to guess at the Monday weights for 5x5 squat and bench which resulted in some very unusual style last reps and very odd noises. I set the starting weights too heavy, but I got the reps, ugly painful to watch reps but hell I’m counting them!
It looks like I’m back to where I was in March, with probably 20kg to add to my 5rep numbers and then taper down to 1rm now with only 5 months to do it. Genius. At a guess I think I wandered off because I wasn’t seeing any difference in my 1 rm.

Looking back that’s probably to be expected as I never trained for 1rm! I was training for 5rm.I never tried tapering down or focussing towards it, I didn’t know how to (I still dont!) Anyway today I feel like I’ve been run over, I’m sore all over. In a good way (that always looks weird when I read that). Payback I guess. I’ll just have to see how close I can get with the remainder of the year and look to focus from November towards a 1rm in December.
Moral? Be patient. Signed: Idiot.

I just read much of your log and you seem pretty determined to make your goals. Are you shooting for a meet? You call doing set of 8 and accessory work a rookie mistake. Why? As long as you were doing something that didn’t cause an injury I wouldn’t consider training as totally wasted.

No I’m not planning competing or going to any sort of meet, unless I get some really competitive numbers at some point in the future. That would be an extra, not really what I’m planning for at all.

I set myself some numbers at the start of the year that I figured would be fairly good to hit, a bit more than the average guy sort of thing. Nothing world shattering but not bad for a guy my age.

I suppose I called the time wasted because my strength hadn’t improved over that period whereas it had improved whilst doing the TM. What you say is true no injuries maybe a wee bit better conditioning so no harm done.

It was frustrating to realise that I could have been a lot closer to my goals if I’d stuck to the original program.

I could do with some more advice folks.
I tried out my 1rm the other week just out of curiosity and I hadn’t done them in months, and the numbers were there or there abouts where they should be for my targets. If anything a wee bit behind.

My question is should I continue with the Texas method right to the end or start to look at something else to focus towards the goal or peak towards it?
The reason I ask is that the gains seem to be getting slower and slower now (that’s normal Id guess), especially in bench, and I beginning to wonder (AGAIN!) if Im doing the right thing.
I know many people have gone a LOT further on the TM than I have at the moment.
Hence the confusion!
I am either doing something wrong or am just being impatient.
At the moment I am uncertain which it is.
Any thoughts / advice?

Thank you.
