jw, my grip is a problem for me, too. the only thing that’s helped for me is kroc roze. that;s what I am thinking of when I do them, my grip. it has helped…

3/11/10 5/3/1 military(1) cycle 8

155x 6. 9 would have been a PR.

I just have to say that my CNS is a fried mess. I would have been better off doing some conditioning shit and doing militaries on saturday, but lifting on the weekend is tough to make happen. Did bbb militaries supersetted (sort of) with pull downs. My grip is still so shot from Monday Kroc Roze, that I had to wear straps for sets 4 and 5. i feel beat down, but swole, and as you all know, its all about the Swole.

I decided that my PWO drink required more carbs, so I bought a carl’s jr. malt and mixed it with my 50g protein drink. I don’t know if it will have that recovery-boosting property, but it sure tasted good.

no lifties again til monday, so I am hoping to do complexes, tabatas, sled dragging or something on fri sat and sun.

weighed 294, took 40 min.

okay, last night i walked up 4 flights of stairs, hoping it would put a dent in my post squat doms. just a dent, felt marginally better this morning, so I got up early and did

barbell complex, 92lbs. did not feel like I would die, but I didn’t feel like Zeus either.

My current plan is to lift mon, tues, thurs, and do some conditioning on wed fri sat and sun. on some weeks, i may lift 4 times. I don’t know. its hard to schedule all this stuff.

I am reading a book called “better than steroids” by a dr. Willey. Its a diet book. It appears to be several, perhaps simpler, approaches to carb cycling. I have never really tried that hard to make post work out nutrition work for me, but having read this book, I am going to give it a try. I ordered my first bottle of Surge Recovery yesterday.

I bet 92 lbs never felt so heavy. Complexes have a way of making someone feel like a pussy. The first time I tried a complex I put 135 lbs on the bar. It was lowered to 95 lbs very quickly. Let me know if the new diet plan works. I need to know how to better cycle carbs (I hope its simple).

the fact that I am somewhat pleased at surving with 92 lbs makes me feel like a pussy. Once you get going consistently, the weight comes up reasonably quick, but I’ll never be able to do huge poundages.

I bet its better to up the reps and lower the rest periods then to up the weight used. Save the huge poundages for deads and squats.

Bringing this over from the dogpile so I don’t take his thread too far off topic. Just happened across this film on AMC the other day, they compressed all the one on one injun fights but great stuff.

Caught the last 15 minutes of Rob Roy last night, now there’s a fight!

Skin griz’s harder

3/15/09 5/3/1 Deadlift(1) cycle 8
350x7 pr (up one whole pound, but I’ll take it!)

did all the accessories. took an hour. thanks to a great deal of fighting with my wife over the weekend, I ended up at 299 weight wise.

I got my Spud Inc Deadlift Belt just in time for training. I was so excited, it was like the prom. I used it for the money set, and it was too big. For the first, and probably only time in my life, I overestimated my fatness. gonna have to turn it around and get the next size down.

MJ… things lookin’ great over here buddy!

With regards to the grip problems with the front squats… I take my straps, and put them on the bar (like a lasso) and tighten them up, then I wrap the loose ends around my hands and rest the weight on my shoulders. It seems to work for me… my problen isn’t grip but wrist and shoulder flexibility. This may work for you.

I can get a pic for you if hard to visualize.

3/17/10 5/3/1 bench(1) cycle 8
255x8 PR +2lbs

did all the accessories, in and out in 50 minutes, weighed 295. I feel smoked.

I broke down and bought some Biotest surge recovery. my recovery has felt not so good, so I figured I’d buy a can and give it a try. today was the first day I used it, so I don’t know yet, and next week is the deload, so it’ll be a couple weeks before I know if its equal to the hype. it does taste pretty good, but its uber sweet. i got the raspberry.

my wife got the stitches out of her hand, but she’ll have the steel rod in the finger for at least 3 more weeks. she is not happy about this, but we’re really hoping she’ll get most of the use back. the doc told her that it would be very difficult for her to bend her finger after this. She’s as tough as she is mean, so I have no doubt that she’ll get through it.

No worries, I have seen what you are talking about. I decided that I would try really hard to rack the bar properly, just in case I get the itch to do some olympic lifting someday, so I am taking a bunch of kmac’s advice, letting the bar roll onto my fingertips, and tolerate the choking (that’s the hard part for me). its working out for me, but it still feels a little awkward, after only doing it for one day.

Never could get the front squats racked proper. Been thinking they might help my throwing more than regular squats. No matter how I do them I end up with the bar right in the adams apple.

kmac says that’s where its supposed to be, and you’re just supposed to tolerate the choking.
It sucks, but my back is so weak on these, it has to be worth it

3/18/10 5/3/1 squat(1) cycle 8
Cleans - 150x 8 PR +3
Squats - 340x 3. needed 8 for a PR but felt like shit.

only had time for 3 sets of bbb, did front squats with the amazing weight of 115. i sucked. my back really hurts now. i cut my warmup a little short, so that prolly had something to do with it. that and doing the cleans before the squats.

enough excuses. my back is weak and I suck

I know the feeling. As ghey as it sounds, I like having the manpon on for front squats for that reason. And I use straps like mentioned above. Makes it easier to pay attention to form.

You have them bad days from time to time. Still thats nothing to sneeze at.

it was the cleans before the squats… good work though buddy!

3/20/10 5/3/1 military(deload) cycle 8
did the work, nothing else to report

that was saturday. my back was killing me, because I refuse to do a dynamic warmup for militaries. that may have to change.

Sunday nite, lax-balled my ass for an hour, feeling nearly human today. You’d think that with as many times as this has happened, when my back first starts hurting, I would stop, pull out the ball, and get busy. but no. I just don’t have that kind of learning curve.

I normally drink a couple pots of coffee per day. I only had 2 cups on friday, and had no coffee on saturday. I was a homicidal wreck at my side job, and terrorized my family for a few hours after i got home. Sunday, the side job was sizing up to look ugly, so I went ahead and had some (very weak for me) coffee. I was back to my loveable serial rapist self in no time.

So, lessons learned over the last 4 days:

  1. when my back hurts, its my piriformis. I don’t need ibuprofen, whiskey(at least not for my back) or back stretching. i need to get out the little ball and torment myself.
  2. when you are terribly addicted to something, and you stop cold turkey, prepare to make enemies of your loved ones.

Now, you might be wondering why I should do something so silly as to quit drinking coffee. its to give my liver a break. I read another book by the Doctors Eades which indicates that in middle aged folks, liver stress contributes to visceral fat storage, so the first 2 weeks of the diet looks somewhat like the velocity diet, except its 1 meal/day, 3 shakes/day. But you have to stop booze, caffiene, nsaids, etc. for 2 weeks to give your liver a break. If you’re interested, the book’s called “the 6 week cure for the middle-aged middle”. These are the same folks that wrote the Protein Power Lifeplan. After reading the book, since I do have a fair amount of lard inside the abdominal wall, I decided to try it out. luckily its only the first 2 weeks that you have to give up coffee. booze is easy, for all the talking I do I only have 1 drink per month (except in Laramie) anyway. the ibuprofen is tough though. my wrists and elbows and l. knee hurt from the arthritis, plus the knee is swelled up to the size of a basketball (well maybe not QUITE that bad). I am looking forward to a return to regular coffee and ibuprofen on April 2. The good news for me is, that when I get back onto a mostly protein diet, the arthritis aches go away, so it’ll just be the knee.

So, I’ll continue to report on my diet progress and my lack of caffiene destroying the lives of others. I am just glad that I started this at the start of a deload.

Good luck on the changes mj, sometiems the body needs a good swift kick in the ass to get right.

being a quitter is hard work…

we quit caffeine here about 1.5 years ago to try to get pregnant.
I turned into a raving loon- mostly I drink esspresso
it actually has less caffeine then brewed coffee cause its brewed faster.
we buy good decafe fresh roasted beans and have them ground- makes a huge difference to
drink GOOD shit even its decafe…

I do admitt to loading up on caffinated shit at work - otherwise Id never make it through the bigger days.

quit harder.

youll love the change eventually
