felt rushed, lots of stuff to do, did not do accessories. i decided that the only way to make sure that I drag my ass into the weight room on this trip is if I know its in and out quick. so, tomorrow, deadlifts, that will be the last session of this trip, thursday will be a whiskey pr, then drive home friday. big fun in little sparta.
have not lifted since the military session. big drinking and eating instead.
so, i’m at my side job on saturday, and I get a call from my wife. she is in another city with out son at his swimming meet. she is in the hospital, because someone slammed a door on her hand. So, I leave work to go to the swim meet so our kid is not unattended. It turns out that my wife’s finger is broken in 4 places and has tendon damage, and she has to have some special surgery tomorrow by a hand specialist. she may not get full function back on the finger even with the surgery. so, tomorrow I’ll be shuttling back and forth between the hospital and my son’s school. She’s been taking it pretty well, but she keeps thinking “if I had opened the door a little less, then the other door wouldn’t have hit my hand” and stuff like that. I think its hard for her to accept that sometimes things are just outside our control. Of course, as the good and loyal husband, I’d like to kill someone for her, but i’m not sure that would help anyone but me. I’m trying to be supportive, but I don’t nurture very well.
i’ll try to get the bare minimum of deadlift today, just to blow of some stress, if the schedule allows it. i am not counting on it though.
Marianne’s hand surgery was tuesday, and it seemed to go well. she is at the doc for a follow up now, and I’m waiting to hear how it went. up til now, there’s been no word on her tendon damage. The tendon is the biggie in terms of getting full use of the finger back, so I’m hopeful.
She found out after the surgery that they put in an extra plate that will need to removed in 4-6 weeks. she was pretty upset about this, she wanted it all to be over. From my point of view, whatever it takes to give her best outcome, even if it means another surgery in a month to take the shank out.
3/4/10 5/3/1 deadlift(3) cycle 8
330x 7 (10 would have been pr)
I actually did dl accessories today, for the first time in a month I think. i got 3 sets of 10 at 195, and 3 sets of 10 incline situps.
Then I tried something new. it turns out that the number of exercises in the cosgrove complex I use is also the same number of work sessions in a tabata program. some of the coaches over at Elitefts.com have been pimping the concept of doing tabatas with different exercises instead of 8 sets of front squat. I went to Target and bought a little 9" wall clock for $4. I took the plastic front off, and I colored the area between 4 and 6, and the area between 10 and 12. This is my TabataTimer™. exercise when the big hand is in the white, slobber cry and breathe hard when the big hand is in the orange.
I figured that since I only have to have 1 set of each exercise, that I should use a bigger weight. last time I did the complex, I used 100 lbs. today I used 145 lbs. This was a big mistake. did deadlift for 20s, rest for 10s, romanian deadlift for 20s, rest 10s, rows for 20s, rest 10s, power cleans for 10 seconds, rest for 1 minute, front squat 9 seconds, look for wall defibrillator…done for the day. Lame. only got half way through.
See, my idea was to do tabatas on squat and dl days, and full complexes on bench and military day. That will be the plan, but i will choose my poundages with some more humility in the future.
My standing friday lunch appointment (my mom) isn’t coming tomorrow, so I may go in and fail at bench.
Wow, sorry about the wife’s finger. Make sure, as much as you can, she does the exercises she’s given.
The cosgrove/tabata/lunar eclipse alignment complex thingy was way to complex(see that)for me. Sounds like a killer though. What distance his you kid swimming?
Hey Harry, Erik swam the 50m breast and the 100 IM on Friday, on saturday he did the 100 breast, the 100 free, and some other event that I can’t remember because I didn’t get to go on saturday. he got PRs in 3 out 5 events, but he did not qualify for the state meet. He is not disappointed about it at all though. He has another meet this weekend, but I won’t get to go to that one
3/8/10 5/3/1 bench(3) cycle 8
240x 10. 11 would have been a pr. still, given my recent performances, not bad.
Did the full accessories. felt like wrung out poo, it was a great session.
I built my own olympic-size dumbell handle out of pipe that I bought at home depot and my pimp spinlok collars. I call him “Frankenbar”. I’ll post a picture and some destructions for building your own, if I can figure out how to post a pitcher
Way to get the training in with everything going on. Not always easy to get the training in on top of everything else. It sounds like you made a fat dumbell. I use my homemade fat bar (pipe from home depot) for a lot of exercises now. Something different.
sort of. I used a 3/4"x6" nipple (1" outside diameter) for the handle, then used adapters to get to the 2" outside diameter of the plates. i’m still too weak to hold onto a fat bar.
I asked Jim Wendler if when doing cleans prior to squats, if you should do the min on one and max the other, or try to max both. Jim’s response was “It is not too much to ask, to be awesome twice in one day”.
Also, for the first time, for the BBB I did 5x10 front squats. boy do I suck at these, but I smothered my ego and started real low to make sure I could get sets of 10. I started at 95 and ended up at 115. I’ll keep coming up. I think a couple years ago I did 225 for 4 or 5 reps. I did these in the “rack” position, cuz I want kmac to think I’m cool, even though I am twice his weight frontsquatting like a third of what he does. I also did it in the rack position cuz I want to get better at that for cleans.
So, an outstanding training session, and I am sure that I will be paying for it tomorrow - my back is already seized up. I weighed 296, and it took me an hour and 20 minutes.
front squat more weakly,
old lardass
Oh yeah, yesterday I bought a Spud Inc 3 Ply Deadlift Belt, since they were having a free shipping sale. should get it in a week, I am very excited. i would rather have new gear than ice cream. well…

Boots help me balance when doing fronts. Ankles aren’t as flexible as they once were.[/quote]
I don’t have a problem with balance so much as with stability. I’ve always felt like my lower back strength (or lack thereof) has held back my squat and DL. The front squat puts a lot of different pressure on my back and abz, especially back. I figure a few cycles of this and my back strength, and therefore both my squat and dl, will come up. I hope.

I have the same issue, combined with grip. I wish I had the intestinal fortitude to work on my weakness. I’m a weenie. Great job MJ
