Ironmantrw's Path

I thought I would post my training log on here hopefully I will get some helpful feedback. But first a little info about me. I’m 52 years old with about 25 years hit or miss training experience. I’m about 5’ 8 in tall and currently weigh around 210. But I am thinking about going up to 220 for a short time for a powerlifting meet coming up in September. I haven’t lifted in competition since the 80’s and then only in local meets. At that time I weighed about 165. I lift in a gym owned by a good friend who lets me bring in some of my personal equipment. I’ll get started with my monday 06/02 workout and go from there.

Bench 45x15x2 135x5x2 185x3 225x2 275x1 295x1 305x1 315x1

Shirted Bench 365x1 385x1 395x1 405x1

5 Board 405x3x2

Seated Face Pulls 155x10x3

Close grip 4 board 225x10 265x10x3

Hey Ironman, welcome to the boards. You are sputting up some powerful numbers already. I am looking forward to your following your log

Thanks, but I feel like with so many years of lifting my numbers should be a lot better. That’s the reason for this log. I did 450 shirted on bench a year ago before I injured my shoulder. This was a gym lift by the way.

Nice to meet you ironman! Welcome

Welcome Ironman! This is a great bunch around here - you’ll feel right at home.

Grettings. Last PW meet I was in was back in the 80s, too. Been playing around with the idea of trying it again. I’ve never lifted with a shirt or used boards benching so I’ll be interested in your training.

Saturday 06/07

Safety bar Speed box Squat 65x10x2 155x5x2 245x2 275x2x10

Good mornings 275x5 335x2 425x3x2

Seated single leg curls 100x10x3

Hammer low rows 180x8 270x6 360x6 450x8x3

Chins BWx10x4 superset with rolling dumbell tricep press 35x10 40x10x3

104 degrees outside today felt like 90 in the gym. I felt weak on the good mornings so I cut back on the reps. Might have been because I had to mow my yard in the middle of the day. I’m thinking about putting down concrete in my yard and painting it green, but I don’t think it would go over too well with my wife.

Good to see another guy in his 50s on the boards.

Strong workout inspite of the heat.

It was about 90 when I got a wild hair and decided to push mow my yard instead of using the rider. Boy was that a STUPID idea!!

I have threatened to pour a slab of concrete and lay some used Astroturf at my house. The neighbors AND my wife hate hearing that.

hel320, my best lifts in the 80’s were 405 squat, 280 bench, and 455 deadlift I think. I won a couple of meets, but didn’t do so well in a couple others. This was before I started using a bench shirt. But I did use a Marathon squat suit. By the way all my squats were done olympic style because I didn’t know any better.

My training now is a 3 day a week modified westside which I think works best for me because of my age. Back in the 80’s I worked more of 4 day push pull bodybuilding split again because I didn’t know any better. Sometimes I wish I had taken the advice of the owner of the gym where I was lifting at the time. He told me if I wanted to bench more to throw out a lot of the extra stuff I was doing for my bench.

Up here the only lawn mowing that happens, happens when the elk come through and do it for us…

Feeling weak on the GM’s - Holy S*** man just looking at those numbers makes me cringe. nice work!

Tue 06/10/08 DE day
Mobility work
Speed Bench 45x15x2 135x5x2 185x3 225x3x8

Close Grip 4 board Bench 225x10 265x8x2 275x8

Another hot day in the gym. At least I didn’t feel like puking like I did on saturday.

Strong stuff Ironman…nice work!

Really strong. I just hurt my back reading the GMs with 425. Like your workouts.

Welcome Ironman… wow, impressive numbers!

Ironman, you make me tired!! That’s a helluva workout

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, but I still don’t feel like my bench numbers are that good. I made a change in my speed work on bench. I was using bands but I may have been overtraining a little bit so I went to straight weight. I’ll probably cycle back to the bands in a few weeks. Tonight is ME squat night I’m hoping to hit a decent number.

Another hot day at the gym Thursday 06/12/08

Mobility work
SSB box squat 65x8x2 155x5x2 245x2 345x1 435x1 475x1 495x1
Pull through 215x10x4
Dumbell Rows 105x8 150x8x3
Chins BWx10x2

I didn’t get the number I was looking for in my squat probably because I felt tired the whole workout. I started to bag it and go home. But I toughed it out and made it most of the way until I had to quit to go to work.

That heat will sap you! Good work inspite of feeling tired and the heat.

Monday 06/16/08 De Squat Day

Mobility Work
SSB speed box squats 65x8x2 155x5x2 245x2 295x2x10
Pull Throughs 215x10x4
Hammer Strength Low Rows 180x8 270x5 360x5 450x8x3

Blew off my Saturday Bench workout. There wasn’t anyone in the gym I could trust to spot me, plus I was still feeling a little rundown. My son came up to stay with me for a few days so I should have more motivation to get in the gym and bust my ass. He is going to leave for Hawaii in a few weeks. I’m sure going to miss having him around.
