Old Lardass

Good work with your son.
You and the mail man should be proud.

I just posted this on Eco’s thread.
I always had a hard time with front squat til I spread my hands out further…
like by your shoulders- let the bar choke you.
If your wrists or arms hurt- its cause your holding the weight in them

widening the elbows/hands helps keep your elbows high and your body vertical
( not that front squat dont cripple me either)

I never learned the olympic lifts properly, so I just try to rack it in a way that will keep the bar on my shoulders. for the most part, I look like i’m about to do a military press. I will experiment with the hand placement and see if that helps. Once I get the rack right, I can start adding some weight and get strong.

I hab a code now, so I can’t train. doing any kind of conditioning when I have a cold just makes it worse, and that’s what happened yesterday. I knew I had a problem when i got the chills 30 minutes after complexes. usually i am still sweating at that point. could not lift at lunch yesterday, so i am behind on lifties.

I will try to make it in and just hit the deadlift numbers today, then go in and hit the bench numbers on saturday - that will keep me caught up on weight training.

Also, I just figured out that with the lifting schedule I’ve adopted, I am not spending enough time at my desk. I am going to skip the morning conditioning and just go into work. it will take less time if I add the complexes or some tabata to the end of my weight training, then I will be getting my hours in. I’ll save the sled dragging for the weekends. I guess. this would be a helluva time to lose my job (which I do every 2 years like clockwork - poor impulse control i guess).

not training harder today,

I suck moving from cleans to front squats as well. I hold the weight just under my chin and muscle through the front squats. Funny but front squats hit my low back less then just about any other lift. Bench hurts my back more then front squats.

I take it your son takes after his mother…
no surprise on the lack of back impact, considering how much you zercher. But I’ve always kind of babied my back, so it is weak compared to the rest of me. That’s why I know I need to add front squats, cuz i am afraid to do zerchers like a big boy.
Do alot of GHR work before you start your zerchers. If you do not have access to a GHR machine just lean over a inclene bench adjusted so the top of the back rest is at you hips and lay face down over it with your head where your ass is supposed to be and lift your legs up in the air while squeezing your ass and knees together. start @ 3x10

like a poor mans reverse hyper?

I hope you shake that cold, MJ. It took a month to shake mine.

i think its starting to ease up finally. I am not training again until its gone. i am miserable old and whiny, and if I train it wont go away. i am hoping to be back in the saddle for lifties on Wed.

Are all my southern/eastern brothers enjoying the snowfall?

No, I’m not. And anyone that uses the word “lifties” needs to run, not walk, as fast they can to the nearest weight room and lift something.

Hell no, the average temp here in Feb. is 58 degrees but the last couple of weeks it has been in the low 30’s.

Hope you kick that cold soon MJ

Sorry, even though it may (does) impugn my manliness, i will always refer to it as lifties and draggies. so there.

i feel much better today, but not good enough for LIFTIES.

with a little luck, and a little sleep, tomorrow, for lunch, I will have LIFTIES.

over on eco’s thread, he suggested that I re-read alwyn cosgrove’s excellent article called Hierarchy of Fat Loss. I just re-read it, great article. The suggestion is that regardless of what you train for, if you want to lose fat, you should drop everything and change your training for fat loss.

I know that this is probably true, but I am loving the 5/3/1 (kill you if you don’t do it) and I don’t want to change. I am going to add my barbell complex or a tabata session to the end of each weight training session (I can’t afford the time to train twice per day any more). I am hoping to get 5 or 6 training days per week. non-weight days I will go to the park for some DRAGGY-SLED. So, we’ll see how this works.

If after a couple weeks of this, if I am not dropping some lard, I will probably replace the 5/3/1 accessory work with more complexes/tabata stuff. We’ll see. this would be a lot easier with unlimited time for training. It would also be better if I could stay hard on my diet for more than a day. Hard to say no to all the bad food out there, especially when it tastes so good.

I’m going to give what Cosgrove suggests a go and see if it works. I’ll let you know how it goes for me.

Steve, what are you going to use as a lifting template while you are fat-dropping with the surly Scot?

2/17/10 5/3/1 deadlift(5) cycle 8
315x 5
no accessories
weight 293

12 would have been a PR, but since I am still weak as a kitten after my little head cold, that was the best I could get today. I was gonna go for 7 but my grip gave out. I did double overhand for all my sets except the money set. Funny thing is, this is the first time i’ve done the money set without a belt, just my left only UberPimpEliteKneeSleeve, and I felt more stable than usual. I was able to push out more, cuz my belt is too small for the massiveness that is the old lardass.

weight is down from start of 299 (still don’t want to admit to 300lbs), so either i dialed in my diet a little better, or I consumed some muscle when i was sick. i feel pretty good sickness-wise, so I should be lifting normally by middle of next week.

Benchies tomorrow!

Cannot bear to be on page 2 - Ego Bump

did not bench yesterday. I was a good daddy, and sacrificed benchies to go see my brilliant 11 year old son take 2d in his school science fair. That means he gets to go to the next level, which I think is a district competition. he did a real neat experiment on air polution. having a chemist for a mommy is certainly paying off for that boy.

I don’t worry too much about the mailman, but if he starts wearing a plaid skirt or picking up heavy shit and throwing it far, I’ll be driving to alabama…

No lifties is ok when you are being a good daddy. Keep up the good work.

2/20/10 5/3/1 bench(5) cycle 8
230x 9

12 would have been a pr, but I am just trying to get back on track after being sick, so I found this to be acceptable. I also did 3 of my 5 sets of accessories, so its good progress. I’ll be in Laramie on monday night, hoping to get a full squat workout close to Pr with all accessories, and I’ll feel like I’m all better.

Its supposed to snow all week in Laramie, so I don’t know if I’ll be getting any DRAGGY-SLED but I’ll take my harness and some poundage just in case. I’ll also take a bottle of Rye to celebrate my temporary freedom!

Good work on the bench, MJ! Have a safe trip to Laramie.

thanks Jack, made it all safe and sound

2/22/10 5/3/1 squat(5) cycle 8

cleans, 135x 11 pr
squats, 305x 5 bare minimum

I don’t know if it was the 6 hour drive, the lingering sickness, the extra 3k feet in elevation, or general pussitude, but I could not catch my breath during squats. I hit the bare minimum and shut it down with no accessories.

tonight should be militaries, and that should be a complete session. we’ll see.

in the meantime, watched Wanted on my pc, which was very cool, while drinking a couple stiff rye and diet cokes. all in all a useful evening.

train breathlessly

Hell, 305x5 on squats is good in my book.

You were probably just having a small heart attack. The bare minimum is often enough.
