I’ve over 50, and a ffb, and my f’n knee hurts. I’m going to see a knee doc tomorrow, a former basketball player, but Dr. Eric. Wow.
What else did he say other than a brace?
I can empathize with calling yourself “dumbass” but I hope you know better. I call myself “old man” and normal, but I know better. Keep up the good work.[/quote]
He was surprised that I was still mobile considering the lack of cartilage on the outside of my knee. Since I am still mobile, he suggested that I continue what I was doing, and drop some weight. I had told him that sustained stuff like skiing and hiking are what caused the most pain, which is true. I can’t run or do anything like that because of the lack of cushion in there. He told me to start taking an ibuprofen every day to control the inflamation, and to monkey with the amounts on my own. he said I can go up to 8, 3 times per day for a total of 24, but to start at the bottom to find the right dose. there is always some swelling on the lower left of the kneecap, so we will see how that goes. I kind of made clear that lifting heavy shit, or trying to, was the only fun I get in my life, so he said to listen to the knee, and back off when it cries. The brace is a thing that actually pushes my knee out, so that the weight/force is applied to the inner miniscus, which is healthy. The outer part is nearly bone on bone.
While I was waiting to see him, I watched a cool video on partial knee replacement, where they only do the replacement on the side that is damaged. I asked if I was a candidate for that, and he said yes. I asked if he had heard how many people with those had a 600 pound squat (my goal for the next 3 years). He said he hadn’t heard, but that somebody prolly had. he also said that from a replacement standpoint, the amount of weight/force you can bear on the partial is much lower than the full replacement, and that if I was going to keep doing this after a replacement, that I should get the full.
He indicated that it will likely be some time before I need it. He said when walking to the bathroom hurts to bad to do it, and the pain wakes you up in the middle of the night, we can talk about replacement. Those aren’t current problems for me, so I am pretty happy with the diagnosis. Its nice to have a doc that understands some people’s need to push the limits, even when they don’t approve.
This is a very old injury, from 1982. I had avoided scope surgery when it might have helped, and its out of the question now. the only reason that I went to see a doc now, is that I promised my son I’d get my knee fixed so I could go skiing with him this winter. I grew up in a ski town, but in the last 20 years, I haven’t been able to ski 2 runs in a row because it bugs my knee so much. Anyway, that’s why he recommended the brace and dropping the poundage.
