You’re right, nut-hugging was definitely in order, and I feel stupid for not telling him how much I looked up to him as a kid. Another lost opportunity. I’ll have another chance next time I eff up my knee, which shouldn’t take too long!

I’ve over 50, and a ffb, and my f’n knee hurts. I’m going to see a knee doc tomorrow, a former basketball player, but Dr. Eric. Wow.
What else did he say other than a brace?
I can empathize with calling yourself “dumbass” but I hope you know better. I call myself “old man” and normal, but I know better. Keep up the good work.
He was surprised that I was still mobile considering the lack of cartilage on the outside of my knee. Since I am still mobile, he suggested that I continue what I was doing, and drop some weight. I had told him that sustained stuff like skiing and hiking are what caused the most pain, which is true. I can’t run or do anything like that because of the lack of cushion in there. He told me to start taking an ibuprofen every day to control the inflamation, and to monkey with the amounts on my own. he said I can go up to 8, 3 times per day for a total of 24, but to start at the bottom to find the right dose. there is always some swelling on the lower left of the kneecap, so we will see how that goes. I kind of made clear that lifting heavy shit, or trying to, was the only fun I get in my life, so he said to listen to the knee, and back off when it cries. The brace is a thing that actually pushes my knee out, so that the weight/force is applied to the inner miniscus, which is healthy. The outer part is nearly bone on bone.

While I was waiting to see him, I watched a cool video on partial knee replacement, where they only do the replacement on the side that is damaged. I asked if I was a candidate for that, and he said yes. I asked if he had heard how many people with those had a 600 pound squat (my goal for the next 3 years). He said he hadn’t heard, but that somebody prolly had. he also said that from a replacement standpoint, the amount of weight/force you can bear on the partial is much lower than the full replacement, and that if I was going to keep doing this after a replacement, that I should get the full.

He indicated that it will likely be some time before I need it. He said when walking to the bathroom hurts to bad to do it, and the pain wakes you up in the middle of the night, we can talk about replacement. Those aren’t current problems for me, so I am pretty happy with the diagnosis. Its nice to have a doc that understands some people’s need to push the limits, even when they don’t approve.

This is a very old injury, from 1982. I had avoided scope surgery when it might have helped, and its out of the question now. the only reason that I went to see a doc now, is that I promised my son I’d get my knee fixed so I could go skiing with him this winter. I grew up in a ski town, but in the last 20 years, I haven’t been able to ski 2 runs in a row because it bugs my knee so much. Anyway, that’s why he recommended the brace and dropping the poundage.

9/29/09, oh yeah, tried to do complexes for the first time in 2 weeks. did not go well:

6x 97 (could not finish the complex)
5x 92 (could not finish the complex, decided to make a bigger drop)
4/3/2/1 x 82.

I am trying to think up some excuses for only being able to finish at 82lbs. None come to mind

 4. yes, beth was hot. she dominated in the US, but not in the olympics, although I think she may have won a medal.

I kind of snuck in, the rules were that you had to have placed in the top 3 in your state, and I had, but in the “below black belt”. I was one of 3 non-brown belts, and of the 3, I was the lowest rank (sankyu at the time I think). It was fun for the older guys to have a big heavy kid to throw around. It was fun for me because it was awesome. I hung out alot with the 2 big guys from the USMC team, cuz one of them was only 2 years older than me (I was 17). Its their fault I joined the Marines. One of those Marines took the Bronze in the world CISM games later that year in the 100kg class.

The OTC in Colorado Springs was originally Ent AFB. Competed against the Peeps Republic of China there when they were still converting it over, around 1979.
CISM, Conseil International du Sport Militaire or the International Military Sports Council = Competed in the parachuting 1983, lifesaving,1985, and Track and Field 1988. The Russians put all their then current throwing world champions in the military. Kicked our collective asses. Friend of mine was a cyclist. All of a sudden the entire Cinzano bike team was in the military.

Dude, with complexes, no excuses are needed.

I got excuses, but you don’t need them.
Sounds like your news on your knee was not great, but coulda been worse. ?
Went to the knee Doc today myself. Good news, nothing bad outa whack. Saw no reason for an MRI, if it hurts, don’t do it, take aleve if I need to. They gave me some “medical” shorts when I got there. Great shorts Doc, “yea, they don’t fit anybody”
Anyway, keep on keepin on.

Yeah, back in the day, if you were a soviet athlete of world caliber, you were in the Red Army. And they had a great hockey team, too.

One of the coaches we had at the camp was a russian emigre, former coach for the soviet national team. he was Jewish, which has never gone over well with the Russians. he said they used to test performance enhancing drugs by doping up athletes and putting them in enclosures with bears and stuff. I only half disbelieved him.

when I did my little bid at the OTC - this is 91 Steve Javorek was there,
and his people all chek where in charge of programming for what we did in the weight room

he might have been my size at the time 140 lbs ,dude had square balls,
took no shit and when he said you Do eet. you did it.

and one of the greco advisers was Russian- and was a captain in the army there while he competed
he said it was the only way for good life, good food etc.

glad to see you back with complexes busted up leg and all

9/30/09 5/3/1 deads(5) cycle 5
5x 220/255
285x10

2a accessory deads supersetted with decline situps
215x 10/10/10/10/10

2b decline situps
bw x 15/14/13/9

shrugs
315x 15/15

money set 380
fatness 286
time- nearly 2 hours

I was feeling very agro today, so I lifted more than I should have. it was a great training session, but my hips are already killing me, and I think my glutes and hammz will be talking to me before bedtime.

I feel like with the reduced training maxes I’m getting the kind of higher reps on the money set that will have a much better training affect than when I was only able to get the regular reps.

Bench tomorrow. may have some trouble arching, cuz the pchain is basically fried.

As a note, I’ve been listening to the Insane Clown Posse all day, and they are my new favorite band. It has boosted my aggression to new levels. I’m gonna get some clown tattoos and become a Juggalo

Leave it all on the floor Harder,
john

they didn’t give us any programming for weight training. me and the big marines just felt the need to do some heavy squats.

We did have a short session, with Maruyama showing us some judo-related resistance exercises, but I thought they were bullshit and didn’t do them, preferring to squat heavy instead. I prolly should have…loser boy me.

mad props to kmac! i felt like a used bar of soap last night, so I spent 20 minutes or so with the foam roller, tennis ball and home-made monster stick just before bed.

i woke up mobile and nearly ache free. Kevin, you are the man!

Too bad I didn’t do it last night.

Forget to say, 10/01/09 did the 6-5-4-3-2-1 Cosgrove complex with 90s rests using 92 lbs. I was able to do it. I will prolly use 95 on saturday, which is my next scheduled complex day. since it will be at the gym, its either 90 or 95, and I wouldn’t want to backslide, would I?

I don’t why I feel prompted to say this and I know you’ll misuse it…

You are one of my heroes.

This pursuit is painful, it’s inconvenient and you’re not always as successful as you’d like, and you have every excuse not to do it at all, what with two jobs, a funky knee, travelling and what sounds like a certain amount of domestic opposition, but YOU NEVER QUIT. You never even consider it. Ever.

I admire that, sir. Hat’s off to you.

10/02/09 5/3/1 Bench (5) cycle 5

5x 165/190
215x 10

2a. accessory bench
175x 9
165x 10/10/10/8

2b. Kroc Rows
105x 10/10
100x 10/10/13

time: 55 min
fatness: 285
money set equiv: 287

another good session. I think I’ve learned a valuable lesson. When you start 5/3/1 you should really make sure that you calculate the training maxes such that you can hit about 5 on the money set for the 5-3-1 week.

the entire way that a session works is different. The recovery is faster. I’ll have to see how I go the next couple waves this cycle, but it feels better.

Squat Sunday with comlexes Saturday, if the iron gods smile on me.

Love it Harder

Wow, thanks. I promise to use my powers of tolerating discomfort and near-failure only for good.

I had a really shitty day today. This made me smile.

saturday did complexes at 95. completed all sets. I think I will stay at this weight at least for 1 more session, maybe 2.

was supposed to squat on sunday, just wasn’t feelin’ it. took sunday and monday as recovery, catching up on some work. drive to Laramie on tuesday, squatting with 100’s tommorrow.

later babies

nice work on the complexes- squatting with 100’s .
I like how you roll
kmcnyc wrote:

sadly, i roll downhill only

10/06/09 5/3/1 Squat (5) cycle 5
5x 215/245
280x 11

2a single leg (Ian King) deadlifts
bw x 8/8/8/10

2b decline situps
bw x 16/15/14/13

Shrugs
315x 15/15

money set equivalent = 383
fatness- unknown

Surprisingly, even at 7k feet, this was a great workout. I used 100s for the squats at 245 and 280. I was able to get 11 reps on the money set, which is the most reps I have gotten on a squat at any weight for a very long time.

taking the extra time off when I needed it seemed to help. Now I am hanging out in my hotel room, watching saw 4. I will cook some meat on my george foreman, drink a little rye, and get some sleep.

planning to drag the sled for distance in the morning.

Train Harder,
john
