Old Lardass

10/07/09 5/3/1 Military (3) cycle 5
3x 105/120
135x 9

2a accessory military supersetted with pulldowns
105x 10/10/10/10/11

2b Nautilus pull down
160x 10
150x 9
130x 10/10/2 broke

Time 40 min
fatness unknown
money set = 176

Another great training session for me. I always seem to have good sessions in Laramie, at least as far as lifting is concerned.

Funny thing is, my rep max is only 6 pounds off my best. I may actually start seeing PRs again soon.

the nautilus that the gym has are original gear from the 70’s. the cable on the pulldown broke on my last set. that old nautilus stuff sure gives a good pump.

I did not drag my sled this morning, because I was up until 1am watching slasher movies. I only watched one tonight, so I can get to bed by 11pm. I am not planning on dragging, cuz its supposed to snow tonight, and I cant drag when its all slickery.

I still need to get a little work done, and drink a little more Rye before I go to bed.

This Is Sparta-laramie!!!
john

so you got 100 lb plates, rye bad horor movies AND nautilus junk
sounds like great training

It was great training, but all good things must end. long drive home on friday followed by a shift at the night job. up early on saturday to go to my annual fraternity reunion. I am still detoxing from Saturday (its tuesday) so I am not sure when I will next drag my sorry ass into the gym.

10/16/09 5/3/1 Deadlift (3) cycle 5
3x 235/270
305x 8

Shrugs
325x 15/15

The money set equivalent was 386 - up 6 pounds from last week, and 14 under my best. Resetting the weights for higher reps seems to be making a big impact, although I won’t be able to say that for sure until I’ve had 2 cycles.

i had at least 1 and maybe 2 reps left in me, and I feel like a weakling for not getting them. today was about mental strength, and I was weak. Its been over a week since my Military Press session, and I didn’t need the time away, I just couldn’t get into the gym. Plus, I had a great deal of alcohol between thursday and sunday of last week, and I did need to get that out of my system. Still, I felt guilty about not getting into the gym for so long, and I felt guilty about not getting 9 reps this morning.

Fridays are tough schedule-wise cuz I have a lot of things going in terms of meetings etc., so I did the “not doing jack shit” accessory template, plus a couple sets of shrugs because His Jimness would be disgusted by my lack of yoke, and its all about the Jim.

Even though higher rep deads and squats suck the hind tit, they do seem to have a great effect on lifting ability. You got in and got it done, no worries about the mid-cycle mini-break.

Nice work John!

They are a lot of work, that’s for sure. But even after only 1.5 weeks at the lower training maxes, I can feel how this is supposed to work. I think you had your maxes set better at the beginning, because it seems like you have been hitting high reps on the money set all along. Live and learn…

10/19/09 5/3/1 Bench (3) cycle 5
3x 175/200
225x 9

2a. acc bench
175x 10/10/10/10/10 ^

2b. kroc rowz
100x 10/10/10/10/10 ^

Time: unknown, spaced my watch
fatness: 289
money set equiv: 292

an awesome training session by my standards. I feel like a fucking gorilla, which is my favorite way to feel.

I concentrated on staying tight in the bench, just cuz my form is probably shitty. Its real tough to keep tight after the 4th or 5th rep. I think by concentrating on it, and working it, my form and stability will improve.

On the Kroc Rowz, I did them more upright like Kroc does, as opposed to true dumbell rows. I am hoping this will help to grow my yoke.

After 1.5 weeks at the lower training maxes, I am actually approaching my existing est. maxes for the first time since June (the last PR I had). I am 6lbs off on military, 22 lbs off deadlift, 8 lbs off bench, and 25lbs off on squat. I could have hit my bench PR today if I had gone for 10, I think I had another one left inside.

I will be making a slight change in my scheduling. I have been trying to get in on sat-mon-wed, or sun-tues-thurs, but I am working earlier on saturdays so I can’t go to the gym before work, and I am working sundays for the next couple months (time and a half baby), so no lifties on Sundays anymore. I have been trying to do the math in my head to figure out how I can get my sessions in, and the only way is to not have a day in between each session. I will be doing mon-tues-thurs. I figure with fri-sat-sun off from the gym, doing mon-tues back to back shouldn’t kill me. Back to back sessions in Sparta (laramie) seem to work pretty good for me, so we’ll see. hopefully this schudule will allow me to find some time for sled dragging/barbell complexes, but I guess we’ll just see. If it works well, then I may eventually switch to a 4-days/week lifting schedule.

So, tomorrow is skwatts.

Nice work, nice benching.

4 days a week went fine for me- if I cycled squats/deads into speed work or something other then ME or
heavy on both, I put them mon and thursday and it seemed to work-

It’ll be awhile before my schedule allows it, but I have always wanted to try the 4 days per week.

Great lifting MJ. I like the gorilla feeling as well. But do you have the back hair to look the part??

Yes, while I would not consider myself a silverback, because I am not dominant over anyone, my back is covered by a fine and silky greyish pelt. I am told that fish oil makes it so shiny.

10/20/09 5/3/1 Squat (3) cycle 5
3x 230/260
295x 10

2a Ian King deadlifts
bw x 10/10/10

2b pull down abz
130x 10/10/10

time: didn’t keep track, about an hour
fatness: still fucking 289 i am getting fatter
money set equiv: 393 up 10 lbs from last squat, 15 under best

Another good session. so good that I’m still shaking a little. the first 2 work sets sucked, and my back was tight, and I was queer, so i rested for an extra minutes and banged out 10. It felt totally awesome. I think I might have had 12 in me, but i figured i’d save it for some other time. next wave starts thursday with military(1). So far I am liking the training maxes and the new schedule.

the 1 leg deadlift things sucked, so I will try to add a pair of 5lb dumbells next time. I forgot my straps, so I couldn’t hang on the rope for pulldown abz very well. good thing I was out of time and had to leave at 3 sets anyways.

its nice not to dread squat day anymore. the uber-sleeves keep my knee from hurting (too much) and i am finally seeing improvement. it sucked not having any improvement for 3 months.

That’s because you are a pussy and might as well staple your nut sack. Squat more!! Funniest damn thing I’ve seen in a long time.

10/22/09 5/3/1 Military (1) cycle 5
110x 5
125x 3
140x 8

2a. accessory military
110x 10/10/10/10/10

2b. pulldowns
210x 12/12/12/12/11

fatness: real fat
time: morning, didn’t give a fuck
money set 1 rep equiv: 177 (up 2 from last military, 5 under best)

DOMS fairy beat the shit out of me last night. I don’t know how she had time to get all the way to Noo Yawk to put the hurt on Kmac, but he said she did. a little lower quad soreness from the single leg stuff on squat day. a LOT of glute hamstring sorenes from the actual squats. chest still a little tender from bench, but shoulders and tris not too bad.

today was rough. got to the gym at 6am cuz we have a coworker’s last day lunch today, so I couldn’t train at lunch. I really don’t like lifting in the morning, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I am very pleased with my progress this cycle. 3 days of rest until deadlifts on monday. well not total rests, I’ll do some barbell complexes tomorrow, and hopefully once over the weekend. I am also toying with the idea of dragging the sled a little on sat and sun am before work. we’ll see…

Lots of good work going on here. And enough bitching to rival the Powerful Women forum. I like it. Keep up the good work.

i resemble that remark

You the man John. Military press is looking good. You’ll be pressing 200 in no time. And I don’t know if I’d call it bitching. More like colorful commentary.

Nice work on the MP…
You have THE busiest schedule , always get your days in,
and are looking to do more on the weekend.

full of colorful bitching or not you are one hard training dude.

I think the doms fairy is like santa she can visit everyone, over night its amazing.

John, its about time I read YOUR thread, you’ve been a joy to read on all your posts on mine. I can see why you read mine…you’re a little crazy like me and balance hard training with a busy life and little periods of shitty moods, drinking, etc.
I love your goals, nice and lofty like mine and fuck anybody who tries to talk you out of them, including Dr. Eric Heiden. The great orthos that take care of the UF football team told me that benches ruin your shoulders, squats ruin your knees, and deadlifts, OMG, they are death to your spine. HAH.

Westside...damn its complicated, I know its the king of powerlifting training regimens but do you ever just want to say "fuck it I just wanna do the damn lifts???"
The doms fairy...my old nemesis. I complained about that bitch most of my whole first Am I Crazy thread. Figured I would just ignore her my second time around...she's like an ugly, needy girlfriend, don't pay any attention to her and she just might eventually leave you alone.
Keep up the great work and the great thread. Doc

Thanks for all the love guys!

I did barbell complexes this morning. ouch. my pchain is still pretty achy from skwats on tuesday, so that must have been a good workout.

so, today was my last day of complexes at a whopping 92lbs. I get to move up finally (unless I have another week where i have excellent excuses for not doing them, in which case i don’t get to move up in weight.) Kept the rests at 90s, did the work, sweated for an extra 30 minutes, it was awesome.

I have figured out why I haven’t lost any weight in the last 3 weeks. Apparently, I haven’t been dieting. Who know that eating 15-20 fun size candybars was not considered part of Atkins. I have sheepishly asked my wife to hide the all hallows eve candy from me, as I obviously lack focus and discipline.

Perhaps if I lived in a hermit cave, with only Metallica and barbells…
