Old Lardass

MJ, I know its not the same as sled dragging but just a 1/2hour walk or bike ride is still GPP. I walked seven miles a while back and was tired as hell. Hope you heal up quickly.

hey fellas, thanks for caring
DCA, i am definitely keeping the complexes. I am still gonna give it a week before I try it. I can walk fine if i keep my lower leg relaxed, but if I need to balance or anything like that, it uses the torn muscle and hurts like a mutha.

Doc, welcome to the darkness that is my world. I did get laid alot more frequently when I was lean, but that was before I was married, so it prolly won’t make a difference, at least with my CURRENT wife…

KMac, that was exactly what Chris Clark over at elite said to do. “RICE, with ice for two days, then start massage”. I made myself a monster stick last night out of crap in my garage, and I will start using that on my calf today.

Eco, that is the plan. My hero and frequently nut-hugging victim Skinny Jimmy Wendler said walking an hour per day was how he lost the weight, of course along with cleaning up his diet.

So, the majority of my self pity is gone, and I am just concentrating on doing the rehab stuff. I may start dragging my sled for distance again, but I will start with just regular walking for 30-60 minutes. with weights, either a vest or suitcase carry. I still will need a week before I can actually use the calf muscle, cuz it still hurts like hell when I do. Since my calf is prone to tear when I do explosive extension stuff like (a) sled sprints this time, and (b) pushing a car that was out of gas up a hill last time, I won’t be doing those things again. probably.

I can’t believe that a little smart rehab has taken 2 weeks off my recovery time. I am so effing happy that this happened on the first day of a deload week. so no gym during the deload, back on the horse in a week.

We use to run holding rocks in our hands. Doesn’t take much weight to get heavy real quick. Great for the grip, too. Continue staying smart on your rehab cause we all want to push it soon as we feel the least bit of improvement.

thanks. I’ll try

Hel, I was going to say something about you being so old weights weren’t invented so you had to carry rocks for a workout but I chose not to say that.

So how do you think we got those rocks up the pyramids?

you used irishmen? for the pyramid rocks?

MJ I think you could use a ball to slam-
its really satifiying and great cardio.

kmac, i’ve been thinking the same thing. I need to make a tornado ball, or as we used to call it 500 years ago, a big fucking mace with no spikes. I would get tremendous satisfaction from such a thing.

and Eco, stop teasing Harry. they didn’t even invent rocks til he was in his 20’s. who loves ya harry?

well, my first experiment with rehabbing an injury has gone well. usually I will just whine and rub some dirt on it and not work out. last time I tore my calf, i was out of the gym for nearly a month, cuz I couldn’t do any standing exercises.

So, with the advent of such highly advanced and exotic techniques as Ice, Elevation, and Monster Stick Massage, I will lift today. 6 days after the injury. I can’t believe what an asshole i was last time?

again, very glad that it happened on a deload week. today will be military (5) of my 5th cycle. I am also going to see the new knee doc today. you guys are all prolly old enough to remember Eric Heiden, the speed skater from the '76 (I think) winter olympics? dude was my hero. never met him before, but that’s my new knee doc.

talk atchy’all later
john

Eric Frickin’ Heiden! Wow. That guy had some crazy Tom-Platz legs on him. One of my favorite Olympians as well.

MJ that is awesome…

I watched him as a kid, I knew he was a dr.
does this mean you need surgery?

And a very nice guy, and a good doctor i think

I was afraid that I did. He said no need to cut yet.

When I was at the OTC in april of '81, the trainers were still talking about what a great athelete and nice person he was. He wore pants today, as you might expect, so I don’t know if his legs are still as swole as the old days. But he looks incredibly trim and fit, so I wouldnt be surprised if he still rides and stuff…he’s involved with USA Cycling in his Dr status. I didn’t get a chance to talk about how I worshipped him when I was a kid or any of that. no public nut hugging, even though i was tempted.

he did, however, suggest that squatting heavy weights might not be in my best interests in terms of long term knee health. I chose to interpret that to mean “good luck hitting that 600 lb squat!”

9/28/09 5/3/1 Military(5) cycle 5

felt pretty good. saw the knee doctor, he gave me some direction and measured me for a (very expensive) brace. that might help. Also, i feel almost euphoric that the doc said not to worry about a knee replacement any time soon, although he said i shouldn’t still be able to walk with the bone-on-bone lack of cartilage. The new brace should make it possible for me to ski. might also help with pain on the squat and deadlift, though I’m not expecting it.

was able to hit lots of reps on the money set, and that felt good. got nice and swole from the bbb. good times. It feels good to be back in the gym so soon after the dumbass calf tear. although the calf won’t really be tested until wednesday, when I deadlift.

Rehabilitate Harder,
john

Good news. Does that mean you’ll be considering a different squat strategy? Are higher reps okay for the knee?

  1. Heiden’s sister,Beth(?),had the same developed legs. Don’t remember her being as dominate in speed skating as he was.
  2. Which OTC were you at in 81 and why?
  3. Heiden for a doctor is so cool. You’re my hero for today.

Nice work.

I think some minor public nut-hugging is in order.
your Dr. is a stud.

I’ve over 50, and a ffb, and my f’n knee hurts. I’m going to see a knee doc tomorrow, a former basketball player, but Dr. Eric. Wow.
What else did he say other than a brace?
I can empathize with calling yourself “dumbass” but I hope you know better. I call myself “old man” and normal, but I know better. Keep up the good work.

with the brace, all the weight/force will be on the inner miniscus, which is full-sized and healthy. After I get used to it, I should be able to squat normally. he just said to pay attention to what my knee says to me, and back off when necessary.

due to my recent dropping of training maxes, the money set will be of higher reps, so we will see if that hurts more than lifting heavy singles did.

  4. yes, beth was hot. she dominated in the US, but not in the olympics, although I think she may have won a medal.

  5. Colorado Springs - Judo camp just prior to the CISM (military olympics) trials and the Nationals. I kind of snuck in, the rules were that you had to have placed in the top 3 in your state, and I had, but in the “below black belt”. I was one of 3 non-brown belts, and of the 3, I was the lowest rank (sankyu at the time I think). It was fun for the older guys to have a big heavy kid to throw around. It was fun for me because it was awesome. I hung out alot with the 2 big guys from the USMC team, cuz one of them was only 2 years older than me (I was 17). Its their fault I joined the Marines. One of those Marines took the Bronze in the world CISM games later that year in the 100kg class.

  6. I should be your hero everyday. You are definitely my hero everyday.
