2a Close Grip Bench (supersetted with rows)

Well, bench training max is going down another 10 lbs. So now I have lost 20 lbs from my training max on bench. I also took a nosedive on the accessories. I sure hope this is weight loss and lack of carbs, and not Mono or AIDS or something. I wanted to get the fat loss over quick, but I didnâ??t think it would cost me all of what little strength I had.

Oh well. In for a penny, in for a Pound. The adjustment is made.

I always knew that feeling strong was an important part of my emotional makeup. Its hard dropping weights like this. I hope its only temporary. 2 more months, and my bench max will be 98 lbs.

Stick it out - don’t worry: The weights will come down a bit and then start going up again, I 'm sure of it. I don’t know why I am sure of it, but I am.

Thanks, guys. I don’t worry about it too much, except during the lifting session, when it bugs the shit out of me. small price to pay in the short term, so long as its short term only!

7/11/09 5/3/1 Squat (3) 3rd cycle
Warmup 45/135/225
3x 260/290
330x 2 (should have been min. 3)

GM supersetted with knee raises
225x 8/8
215x 10

Hanging knee raises
10/10

Another session with missed reps. I didnâ??t try for the 3rd, I may have gotten it, but I wasnt feeling it. So, according to my rules, I drop my training max for squat another 20lbs, down to 345.

The only lift I did not have to adjust this wave was deadlift. Now going into the 1 wave, and I really dont think (hope) that I will have to lose any more poundage. Then deload. Then next cycle. I will not be increasing any of my training maxes at the end of this cycle, I will hold steady.

In the meantime, I will be talking to a couple people here that have some experience with keto diets. Powerlifter Jason Pegg over at elitefts.com is doing something, so I will ask him for some advice. I will also ask Chris Shugart here. Maybe I just need a little shot of carbs, like Surge or something before I train, that wont kick me totally out of keto. I may just need to accept a bigger drop in my maxes than I expected.

For the most part, my accessory stuff hasnt suffered anywhere near as much as the main lifts, except for bench which has just taken a major nosedive. Neither has my sled dragging. I continue to progress on those. This gives me hope that once my diet phase is over, my strength will come back reasonably quick. Still, I am glad that I have committed to dropping this lard. Lost another few pounds, now down to 281 from 297. I am hoping to hit 275 by my birthday on the 17th.

Stay With It Harder,
john

7/12/09 DRAGGY-SLED!!!

Sled + 37lbs x 1 mile = 27:08

I was hoping that I would hit 30 minutes and therefore not have to add weight. too bad for me. dragging tomorrow with 41 lbs.

i am doing militaries at lunch, but my ego won’t tolerate being on the second page. i am writing this because I am on the very last position of page 1. ego bump

7/14/09 5/3/1 Military (1) 3d cycle

Wu x 45/95
5x 120
3x 140
1x 155 (plus an extra push press, but they donâ??t count)

2a accessory military triple setted with
115x 10
110x 10
105x 10
100x 8
95x 9

2b left knee extensions and
60x 11/11/11/11/11

Pull downs
210x 10/10/10/8/7

Well, I finally got the minimum reps on the money set. Yippee. I am dropping my training max another 10 lbs anyway.

I had a little chat/head-slapping with Chris Shugart , with my beating towards the bottom of the page:

(Forums - T Nation - The World's Trusted Community for Elite Fitness

Chris has convinced me to stop thinking about the loss of strength and concentrate on the loss of life ending lard. So, I am going to take all my maxes down some more after the deload. I am basically starting over and I want to start low enough to progress while I am unfattening.

My shoulders have been killing me for the past couple weeks, and I have been considering doing extra shoulder work etc, when I finally realized why my shoulders went south. At the beginning of the cycle, along with starting the diet, I started doing hanging leg raises. Between the hanging and the deadlifts, my little-girl shoulders canâ??t take it. Iâ??ll have to go back to pull down abz for awhile. Once I am suspending a smaller amount of poundage in the air, I will prolly be able to handle hanging leg raises.

I was 281 this morning still. I donâ??t think I am going to make my goal of 275 by Friday. Of course, as KMC always says, one brain-emptying bowel movement will get me that 6 lbs and more.

All in all, I think I am getting this less fatter thing figured out. 250, here I come!

Great work. You’re on the right path for a long life. I do a lot of warm ups before my military press now and my shoulders feel great. I do 2 sets with just the bar and a couple sets of light lateral raises then move the weight up slowly. I do more warm up for my shoulders then I do for squats,

Nice work.

will you have to get a different name soon.

  • the lifter formerly known as lardass-

shoulders are pretty small joints- for all we put them through.
obviously I pimp the prehab- but my shoulders are actually quite weak and feeble-
the hanging leg raises and yes pulling- do stress them .

6lbs- is really belly button lint earwax and a solid poo.
I bet youll get stronger as you lean up.

Marc Bartley of elite FTS- he went from 308++ to like 240 and documented the whole thing
did you get to see that?

Same here. the only extra warm up i do for squats is TKE and glute bridges, but I do the shoulder prehab as part of my warm up every lifting session.

Now that I know what has been bugging my shoulders, I can stop doing it. i may delay tomorrows DL session til saturday to let my shoulders heal a little. Depends on how they feel tommorrow. I don’t like missing sessions if I can help it.

Yes, I followed his logs the whole time. He is at 240 now, but he actually got down to 198 for the bodybuilding show he did. I still read his log every day, but I haven’t bought his book yet.

I’m not ready to put myself through all that, but I am interested to see how I look/feel at 250. it has been a very long time since I was that light.

MJN- Did you follow “TheMightyStu’s” contest prep? I think he did it correctly, starting with reduced calories at the beginning then ramping down. From experience, I caution you to tread lightly on the “Vee”-d.i.e.t.

Also, Tom Venuto’s book “Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle” was instrumental to me when I lost 70 lbs. PM me if you want more info on that book.

7/16/09 5/3/1 Deadlift (1) 3d cycle
w/u 135/225
5x 275
3x 315
1x 350

2a. Accessory deadlift supersetted with decline situps
225x 10/8

2b. Decline Situps
BW x 12/12

  1. Shrugs
    275x 20
    315x 20

I haven’t had a chance to drag the sled this week, but since tomorrow is my birthday, I will prolly try to drag my ass out of bed in time to drag. I will drag 46 pounds, cuz its my 46th birthday.

Today’s session went pretty well. I hit all the reps. I decided that I will not be trying to hit any rep maxes until I am on the 4th cycle. maintenance for the next couple weeks.

I have added back the 50g carbs to my postworkout drink, cuz Chris Shugart said I was an asshole for not doing it anymore. After he chewed me out, I remembered an article by Thibs saying that you don’t have to worry about insulin or sugar spikes for about an hour after you lift. Since the whole deal with Atkins is controlling carbs to control insulin, I figured Chris and Thibs, prolly right; me, prolly not so much.

its only been 30 minutes since my training session, and I do feel better. Probably sie ko lodzhi kal, but better is always good.

Thanks for the tip, my brother. My library has another one of Venuto’s books, but not the one you recommend, so I have reserved the one that’s available. For now, I am pretty satisfied with sort of doing atkins. I still get 250g protein on non-lifting days and 300g protein on lifting days, which is more than what Atkins recommends. But I am sticking to the 20g of carbs only from green veggies rule (except that I have added back the carbs in my PWO drink, but because of the insulin window, that doesn’t count, so long as its within 1 hour of the training). Even though I am still stuck at 281, I have still lost 16 lbs in a month. 2 more months of that and I will be at 250, which is where I want to take a breath and decide if I want to lose more.

And no, TheMightyStu is a stranger to me. which forum does he inhabit?

Happy one day late birthday young fella. Off to a good start.

Happy (late) Birthday! You don’t look a day over 29. Have a great weekend and eat some cake for me.

Happy late birthday John. I find your determination inspiring.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, y’all. My wife and son took me out to dinner on Friday, and on saturday we went for a train ride that ended with a 90 minute river raft trip. Great fun! Now I’m back on the diet, have to go get my fluids checked so no eating til about 10:30.

Tomorrow, there will be bench.
