Wrist still not up to doing the lifts today, so I back squatted again. Worked up to 115 for a single, then did 7 triples with 93. Not my best day, but I’m happy with it. at least I did something.

Brand new to Oly lifting here. I’ve been doing basic powerlifting stuff for about three years, but didn’t compete. I have been obsessively watching olympic lifting competitions on Youtube and I decided I need to try this sport!

I am just trying to get a feel for the snatch right now. Today I sat in the hole with just the bar overhead for ~10 seconds. I don’t have heeled shoes right now so I put 10 lb. plates under my heels, which doesn’t allow for me to jump and practice the whole movement. I hope to get oly shoes soon (I hear it’s hard to oly lift without them!). My right hand went numb after a few sets of this, I must be pinching a nerve in my neck or something. I also did some light push presses, five sets of light back squats, five sets of light front squats (135 lbs on bar), and some front squat holds to work on upper back strength.

Any advice for a complete beginner?

Just keep lifting bro. No matter what. There will be times when you are going to be frustrated out of your fucking mind from these lifts. You’ll wonder why you’ve bothered, wonder if everything you’ve done has been a waste of time, and you’ll tell yourself you are going to quit. Come back tomorrow anyway.

Get at least decent technique on the lifts and then focus on adding weight to the bar on them. Squat heavy and often. Watch as many videos of as many good lifters as you can. Take vids of yourself and post them up here.

Every time you hit a PR you’ll remember why you do this. It’s like a high. And the struggle to feel that high again will push you through all the shit sessions to your next PR.

I’m completely self-taught though and there are people on this board who possess much more knowledge than I, so take all of this with a grain of salt. Good luck, man.

Clean PR at 139 kg, not cleaning since February’s injury. Still got it! We’ll see about the snatch, not feeling as good about that one.

Ignore the annoying movement of the video, youtube thought it would be nice to “stabilize” it. I reverted it, but it will take time before its normal again.

I am a 84kg guy. Made 2 PRs in snatch today (92.5, then 95 after), both of which were filmed on my friend’s phone. I got a couple of the reps leading up to it though:

Here is Snatch 92.5, 95 miss, 95 make (PR), 97.5 miss twice. Then CJ 110 (matched PR) make, 115 miss twice.

Wow, you snatched 95 and your clean and jerk PR is 115. Thats a strong snatch. Nice snatches, they looked fast. I’m sure you are working on not jumping forward and all that, but figured I should point it out in case you aren’t.

My best snatch is 97.5. Best clean 139… I need to be more like you.

Actually my best CJ is a pathetic 110… anything over that pins me and I can’t stand up. My max FS of 125kg is my main limiting factor right now and I am working on pushing that up as much as and quick as possible. I have been trying to break that habit of jumping forward, thanks for noticing haha.

Solid!

How come you took 104?! Should have gone to 140 mate, a nice round number!

Congrats on the PBs, looked good there.

Strong Sn mate!

Once you get your FS up you’ll rock up the CJ!

I got under 150 in 2008 but go buried twice, but it took me until 2011 till I actually managed to CJ it. I did Cn 167.5 in 2011 but I’ve been hammering my FS up and over the past 18months and tweaking my Jerks.

Thanks! I took 104 because I hadn’t gone over 100 in about 3 months and I had no idea how heavy it would be. It wasn’t bad, as I found. Next time I’ll likely go 80 100 110. I actually went 70,80,90,100,104,110.

I went 139 because I can’t make 140 with my weights. I have KG weights except for 15 kg, where I bought clearance 35 lb bumpers saving like $80. Thats 16 kg though, so it would have been 142.

Back squat kind of PR. I hit my old max 175 kg for 2x2 today. I test on Wednesday or Thursday next week!

Wrist still isn’t quite healed, but it’s getting closer. I could hold the bar in a front rack position, but nothing heavier so I did back squats again.

Worked up to 114 for a single, then backed down for triples. First triple was at 85, wound up working back up to 100 for a few sets. finished with some gluteham and pull ups.

Finally finished exams so I am heading back home for the rest of the summer now. Got in one more training session before leaving town, decided to go for a CJ PR n made 112.5 (previous PR was 110) and got pinned by 115 twice. My buddy gave 105 Snatch a few tries.

Training has been pretty shit for the last week or so. Snatch, clean, and jerk strength are all down, which is quite frustrating. About the only thing that I’m still hitting at a high % of 1rm at the moment is the front squat. Here’s to getting stronger.
