Haha, I wonder if you are not mistaking the picture order here. Pic 1 and 2 are my “after” pics while Pic 3 is from January when I was leaner than I am now.
Weight I think is about the same. I had a stint two months back when I was in really good shape, as I started to sleep, and generally just had less life-stress.
I’ll agree on the shoulders, abandoning bench and focusing solely on overhead has done them well.
All the same, I appreciate your words of encouragement.
That’s a really good, classic show. Great events. I’ve also got a H-stone for max distance in my next show. I don’t particularly like last man standing log press, I like to pick attempts, but at least that simplifies prep for your first show. You just go until you can’t, lol.
Do you have a place where you can train for all of these?
H-stone is one of the events I haven’t trained before and max distance with no time limit seems brutal. I’m hoping 280 is heavy enough to make it reasonable short.
My gym has everything but the car deadlift. I have also have an atlas stone (though it’s light), and I rigged up a car dead at home (I’ve been collecting strong man stuff for a while now just as a fun way to train). I’ve already touched the comp weights on everything but the 2 stones. I’ve done a decent amount of stone work, just not that heavy.
Any good recommendations for programming info? I have a copy of cube method for strongmen and books on highland games which should be pretty similar. I’m basically planning on using the log and the car dead as my main strength movements, followed by some light work rotated with the other implements (4 days a week). Then have a once a week strongman day to stack some events and get used to doing them in a row.
The first guy for me said it while I was benching 80kg (175lbs for the metrically challenged), the second while I was doing some easy pull ups with my kids at the park. In both cases I hope it was just really, really low standards on their part because I like to think I don’t look like I couldn’t bench 80kg or do some pull ups.
Here are the pics from today. My lower back/love handles aren’t great today, probably the cheat week last week and the lack of sleep these last 3 days.
But I don’t care! I’m satisfied with how I look. 82-83 kgs so 4-5 kgs lost and I’m stronger and bigger
So, obviously you look great, but I feel like you should be fined a small amount of money for using the phrase “love handles”. You have lower ab veins. The only girls who could actually utilize your tiny waist as any form of love handle are pro climbers, and they’d have to be chalked up.
I’ve done a max distance H stone twice in competition, I think both were as a middleweight, and both were in the 280-300 range… don’t remember exact numbers because… age. lol. It’s one of the more brutal events I’ve done in any show. One of the times it was 90 seconds. That’s a different level of awful. The key to this event is making sure you get a really good grip to start, exactly where you want it. You need to find out how the time starts. Sometimes, picking the implement counts as part of your time, and if that’s the case, you need to learn to do this part fast. Other times, you get as much time as you need on the pick, and then time starts when you cross a line and start moving. BIG difference. In either case though, the most important thing is to make sure you don’t drop the implement, ever. You have to hold on the entire time.
Train the car deadlift with a trap bar deadlift or frame, since it’s a side handle event, if you don’t find your home setup to be sufficient. Also, implement some leg pressing into your training. Car deadlifts can feel a lot like a leg press.
I agree with the idea of training multiple events in one day, so you can practice in a fatigued state. I do this. I basically do what you’re talking about here… Sundays are event days, where I run through a couple specific events I have coming up in a show. The rest of the week is basic strength training, but often incorporating implements (like the log).
