I have seen two guys using this method in my 20 yrs of lifting.
During the negative portion of a barbell press, they will roll their head forward off the bench, bringing chin close to chest, then roll head back in contact with the bench during the positive portion of the rep.
Anyone ever seen this and know rhyme and reason behind it?
If it is what it sounds like, then they are trying to push the weight up with their neck; seems stupid.
This sounds like one of them thar ULF’s unidentified lifting forms.

Actually, I don’t think they are trying to do it intentionally. I see many lifters who do the exact same thing, and I don’t even think they realize it.
It seems to be an involuntary reflex. And they are not focusing on keeping their head against the bench pad. I’ve noticed it more with bigger guys and guys with larger upper backs and traps…most are usually bodybuilders and not powerlifters (powerlifters stay planted and very tight).
agree with Nate Dogg, there are some lifters who do it just out of involuntary reflex. Jackass does it. And some do it on purpose. not neccessarily give you a better lift it’s more of a personal or technique thing.

This guy the other day was about 140 lbs. I’ll have to ask if I see him again-probably mimicking some big guy he saw.
I wonder if they are doing that for scapular retraction. That is to say if you can get retraction by lifting up your head and possibly raising your shoulders up off of the bench a bit.
i see people do it all the time. when i did my first meet i remember the director guy saying you lose some pounds if you lift your head like that
