This is a question for Brock or Bill or anyone else who has experience in this area: I do not smoke, but I chew between 3-5 pieces of Nicorette gum a week. I have recently been informed that I have to take a saliva test for my insurance company for nicotine use. Apparently, they can not test for smoking cigarettes, just for any conotine(apparently a chemical derivative of nicotine) in the body. Is there any ways to beat the test? How long should I wait to ensure that the nicotine is out of my system? I consulted several online resources on the subject, with little luck. I talked to my doctor, but he was clueless. I have to take the test on Monday of next week, and I last used the gum on Saturday night. Does anyone have any ideas? Any possible resources? Thanks in advance…
Any ideas…
You could try a quick detoxification type diet…Just fish, rice and vegetables.no processed foods…drink 1-2 gallons of water per day with lemon and apple cider vinegar…and try to get a really good sweat going each day…either by sitting in a sauna or running.
I have read (i forget where) that it takes 72 hours for nicotine to be eliminated from the human body…so if I were you, today is Tuesday, dont chew nicorette after Thursday, but if you wanna be safe, stop now.
now I do not know what company it is so this may or may not work but if they do find it in your system it is worth a try. I used to sell life and health for a large company, we had no problem w/cigars just w/cigs, so for myself for example when it showed up in the test I just said I was a cigar smoker (which I was at the time) they accepted it and issued the policy. as a last resort its worth a try. peace
You’ll be clear within 24 hours.
Nicotine doesn’t stick around your body for too long. It has a half-life of about 60 minutes, meaning that six hours after a cigarette, only about 0.031 mg of the 1 mg of nicotine you inhaled remains in your body.
Cotinine hangs around 7 to 10 days.
mind telling us what the bussiness field is? unless it is a health related one, they have no fucking bussiness telling you whether you can smoke (do nicotene) or not, especially since cigs are allowed by law. Please tell generally what kind of job it is, i am interrested.
“Insurance Company” was what the gent said. And, by law, this is allowed for a non-smoker’s policy. Its BS, I know. It doesn’t account for nicotine sources other than smoking.
Been through this myself, and the answer for me was 16 days til I cleared. I had to test to renew my life insurance and failed because of Nicorette. I had not smoked in over 2 years, but kept nicorette around for when clients wanted to go have a drink or socialize. I retook the urinalisys everyday until it cleared, (agent let me do so cause I have more than 12 policies with this company, I had to pay for the re-tests, but was cheaper than smoker rates at 35) No shit, 16 days from the last piece of gum. If they are like my insurance company State Farm, you cannot get an exemption for cigars, or snuff, or even nicorette, but you might offer the info upfront to give it a try. Good news is they have to allow you a retest in 6 months if you contest the results.
I’m sorry I said urinalysis, actually it was taken though a blood test, so your results may differ if they are using saliva.
oic, i thought it was for a bussiness, insurance policy thing, like you wouldn’t get one if you had cotine in your system. Well, if you had nicotene metabolites, couldn’t you go get a lung and throat examination, and if you had no real damage, then get exempted?
they can turn you down for nicotine, flat out, they don’t have to make exceptions, they don’t have to retest, they can rate a life policy because of it (they always will) legaly they can refuse employment if they want (or atleast admission into the company policy). with all due respect to those saying it clears in hours or days, it WILL show for longer (no I don’t know the exact amount of time) I was a cigar smoker and had not smoked in weeks and it still showed! I know what my company told us to tell clients (again I sold life and health for years) and it was that if you had smoked in the last MONTH you will fail. we did not do this to turn people down (we did not give a shit what the home office thought) we did this to APPROVE people.Gymrat225 write your agent a thank you note, he deserves it. I wrote for Monumental Life and Health and we would allow cigar smokers, but the funny thing was we were the only ones that could get it approved, if a customer called and asked the company would tell them they were still a smoker but if they failled and we called and explained that they were cigar smokers and the policy does not say anything concerning cigar smokers we could get it approved. Remember also the two year contestable period(life ins.), if nicotine is in your system and they do still aprove your policy you had better hope you don’t get cancer (or other smokeing related health problems)because if you do they WILL contest the policy. good luck, peace.
Hetyey, one more thing to keep in mind, insurance procedures are dictated by the state your in. So they vary quite a bit.
gymratt225, they do but it realy is more company by company, if you get a policy from company “X” it will not vary much from state to stae, they just will not write business in some states, which I guess is the same thing (apples and orages). peace
