The receiver clearly tried to turtle up and ducked his helmet right into 92’s shoulder.

I never really looked at it from that perspective…
Hmmm…
While that fact does sway me, and I admit I totally missed it. Harrison still appears to be spearing him if you watch him after contact.
dammit now I’m going to have to watch that replay like 600 more times, lol.[/quote]
He definitely followed through on the hit, and I’ll give you that he definitely stuck his nose in there, but I don’t think he was trying to go helmet-helmet.
I think Harrison’s reaction is just him being too honest for his own good. He’s played this way his entire career, since he was a kid, and now he’s being told that he’s dirty, a cheap shot artist, he’s going to be suspended, they fined him more than the other guys (i.e. singled him out as the worst of the worst), etc.
He’s frustrated. I feel the same way, because I tried to play the exact same way, though obviously much less effectively, and on a much lower level. Now all of a sudden everything I was taught is being called into question.
Harrison is pissed because HE’S GETTING HELD ON EVERY FUCKING PLAY! lol…I’m half joking
I was listening to Steve combforward Young talk before the MNF game and he blames these hits on the lack of quality QB’s in the leauge now and how cordinaters are putting recievers at risk with the over the middle/slant routes, atleast that’s how I interptreted what he was saying.

Seems a little off to me. Heap and Jackson were both running vertical routes. Massaquoi was running a 5 yard drag, which is usually very successful vs. Pittsburgh.

Yeah, but I don’t really have a huge problem with the first one. It isn’t like he knew the runner was gonna be held up. I mean, the other Steeler isn’t there and Harrison has a good clean hit and buries the dude.
I’m really starting to reconsider the second to a degree too.
to a degree i agree with steve young… a lot of the younger qb’s don’t have touch anymore… many times WR and RB have to slow down to catch a ball and nothing opens u up for a big hit than slowing down and concentrating on making the catch.
I’m a gator fan and I loved to watch tebow play but no one exemplifies my argument than tebow… whenever he threw it up the pass would be behind the receiver or above the receiver leaving him open for a big hit… always caused me to pause when i see hernandez or harvin having to slow down to make the catch…
After much thought, Steel Nation’s excellent point about the receiver turtling and listening to an interview/rant on ESPN (can’t for the life of me remember the dudes name), I’d like to retract calling Harrison a douche etc.
I’m still not 100% about the second hit. I’m also not 100% that it was dirty anymore, so I want to take back any over the top criticism of the dude.
I still stand bye meriweather being a dipshit though.
And D’s right too, I think this rule is a step towards the “we’re trying to protect you while you play so we shouldn’t have to pay for post retirement benefits. You choose to play that way” direction by the League.

I agree. I still think it’s ridiculous that he’s considering retirement because of this though.
I also think it’s pretty contradictory that the NFL wants to “protect” its players and keep them from hitting one another like this, but it wants to extend the season by another 2 games.
I guarantee just as many, if not more players will be injured in those additional games than are injured by crazy spearing incidents like the ones we saw this past weekend.
In the long run, extended seasons will also have a much greater impact on the long term injuries and quality of life issues that players face.

I think you mean Mark Schlereth.
FWIW, Merril Hoge was on Pittsburgh radio this morning railing against these hits. His point is that the NFL has gotten away from sound fundamental form tackling. I agree to an extent. But, when it’s a receiver trying to catch a pass, a form tackle is much less likely to break up the play than a big hit. You have to lay the lumber in that situation. That’s what all of these hits were ultimately trying to do, and only one (Meriweather) can be considered dirty.
Trying to bring a big hit to a ball carrier is a good way to get juked out of your socks or have the guy bounce off of you and get extra yardage. You need to try to wrap up in that situation.
