And to be clear. Incidental head-to-head contact is well within the limits of fucking awesome too. Bad angles, quick stops, unexpected shifts and shit happen, and sometimes the play just happens too fast to change your body position.

How is this supposed to be judged though?! It’s going to be a difficult decision. How can you tell which one was incidental and which one was purposeful? I understand several MAY be obvious but they won’t all be.

I guess I just feel like if you start penalizing for these “devastating hits” it’s going to get to the point where it gets out of control. Next thing you know we will be penalizing players for tackling the legs out of a player and something in the knee tearing.

Soon we will all be watching FLAG FOOTBALL!!!

(Dunta Robinson was fined $50k)
I hear ya, but it seems pretty clear cut to me. If you have a douchebag head hunting, suspend him. If you have a guy that fucked up, don’t. Reactions, and how they play teh rest of the game help define it too.

Players have reputations, and that is going to play HUGE into it.

I’m willing to bet Harrison or Stupidweather do anything this week remotely close to a head shot, and they both sit for a game or two.

I disagree with Robinson’s fine, and feel like if it happened the week before he wouldn’t have been fined. I think he gto f’ed over by the other idiots this week.

I feel you, brother. They protect QB’s all the damn time. They change the rules so receivers can’t be bumped by Cornerbacks(Key Example: Rodney Harrison and Ty Law vs Marvin Harrison and the Colt receivers.)

NFL only care about money. And you make money by showcasing high powered offenses and QB’s.

Any chance a lot of this safety concerns are a bargaining tool for the CBA? You have all the X-players yelling for health care and the union screaming about not taking care of players. Now the league can say look we are doing everything we can to protect players. Just a thought.
Sure.

But I think more of it is to prevent people from doing this to the Tocho’s of the world. Because those clowns sell tickets and jerseys. No one in the front office wants to see one of those type players go down with a busted brain from a cheap headshot.

I just follow the dollar in situations like this. And the dollar is in guys playing the next down, or a mean fucking hit to the chest that sends a guy flying. So you sell the pick of the hit, and the dude doesn’t die.

The man can hit too.

No I agree with you about the money, the league is only about money. But they are also in a labor negotiation and we may be facing a lockout next year. I think this is just an additional ploy by the league with many perks. Do they care about the health of the players in the sense of fellow man, hell no. The view the players like a machine, and when one breaks and is gone they want to make sure there will be one to replace it.

The commish talks about player safety and then say’s lets add two more games…WTF?

DJHT, It is all about posturing and agendas for next year like you said, I believe anyway.

It may be a sport but when you get right down to it’s still a job with all the horseshit that goes with it.

Unrelated…how the fuck did Jim Mora ever get a head coaching job…TWICE! He may know football but gawd he seems like an asskisser…do not like.

Countingbeans,

You’re an idiot. Enough said.

WOW, what a compelling and well thought out argument.

Take this trash else-where.

Notice how the Steelman and I had a civil conversation with points and counter points above?

Yeah, that is what this thread is about.

Go be a juvenile elsewhere.

yeah you are right. I think we are saying the same thing, but from differing angles.

I don’t trust either side of the labor issue either man. But tend to side with the players, only because they are the ones who are actually doing the entertaining. Owners are just facilitating it. While important, I just side with the dudes on the field.

See told you Wol some of us 09’rs aint that bad. And to the other guy, when your balls finally drop and you gets come curlies down there come back and be with the adults.

funny thing is, i was watching commentary by rodney harrison of all people saying that the league should suspend players instead of fines (ironic cuz harrison used to put money aside just for fines)… he was saying its more detrimental to a player to now be able to play (or receive his game check) and to the team to not have one of ure leaders out there on the field.

surprisingly it made sense… also dungy was saying how suspensions would be much better than fines as far as enforcement… keep in mind belichik at one pt said he would pay the fines for harrison’s hits.

Just heard on NFL network James Harrison is considering retirement because of his 75k$ fine.

lol wut?

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. I mean all he has to do is hit 8 inches lower for fucks sake, lol. But, I believe, he has made some good money the last couple years. If this is some sort of ‘protest’ I don’t think it will work, and only hurt his team.

Too bad too, dude is a great player, dirty but good. Just got nabbed acting a fool and headhunting.

(PS Rodney Harrison was a dirty bastard too.)

^ a “protest” is exactly what it is. Look, Im all for hard hitting, I played safety my whole life so there’s nothing I appreciate more than a running back or widereceiver getting lit up. However, I do feel that Harrison’s first hit on Cribbs was dirty. Helmet to Helmet all the way.

What’s going to happen is that when players get fined they’re going to start pulling this well I can’t play like this so I’m going to retire bullshit. Which makes no sense at all when you think about it…remember how over the last couple of years defensive pass interference has become so strict because this is a pass happy touchdown scoring league? You heard complaining about it, but you never heard any cornerback say well its time for me to fucking retire because I can’t cover anyone like I used to.

(and don’t tell me there’s a difference becasue Harrison was fined…at no point in his interview did he mention the impact of losing money had on him)

It probably is some sort of protest. He’s probably trying to start some new movement against the NFL’s new rules… which is stupid, considering that it’s Harrison, and that was definitely an intentional torpedo right into Cribbs. He doesn’t even need to lower himself, he can make contact with the helmet he’s just got to wrap his arms around the opponents’ shoulders and whatnot. As long as it’s not blatant, he’s fine.

I agree, but I don’t understand how you don’t think the Harrison hit falls under this category. The receiver clearly tried to turtle up and ducked his helmet right into 92’s shoulder.

Pic is from the moment of impact.
