New With Deltoid Problems

Hey all, I've been reading here for a while but this is my first post...

Anyways, I’m 17 years old and weigh about 160lbs. I consider myself in pretty good shape I bench 205 for reps :stuck_out_tongue: (I feel good about that), I squat 275 and only do straight leg dead lifts, don’t ask me why I just got used to it, so I only do 185 but it pretty much kills my hammies :P.
Oh, and my body fat % is around 6%.

Now to the problems…
I’m in good shape except for 2 parts of my body…

  1. Deltoids! I really need some help in this department.i really don’t know what to do! i figured that incline bench and rows would help me enough but not really. Its getting so bad that im struggling w/ 135 on the incline bench. :frowning:

  2. My neck! my neck looks really skinny compared to my body and im kinda starting to feel self concious about it. And keep in mind that i dont have access to any crazy head straps or w/e.

well hope u guys dont flame me…and fuck u all if u do :stuck_out_tongue: j/p

You need all-over mass. The last thing you need is to try to specialize. Get to at least 200 and then we’ll talk about laggin areas.

Unless your 5’2 I think your entire body is a problem area. Honestly if you feel like you need to gain in certain areas a little more than others is one thing but the best medecine is overall mass. Add in some rear delt work but no part of you is gonna grow without proper food intake.

You mentioned that you thought incline benchs are rows would help your delts, maybe you should try some direct movements. I prefer dumbbell military presses and lateral raises for my shoulder work.

Overhead presses.

Eh, I smell quarter squats and quarter bench press. The deadlift doesn’t lie, and is much closer to what I’d expect for someone who’s only 160 lbs. at 6’. I’m surprised no one else said it first.

You may think you’re in good shape just because you can see your abs, but trust me–you have a LONG way to go.

I’d say you’re mistaken, these are your two problem areas. Start eating.

Damn, all of u are flamers…

For the guy who said that he suspects quarter bench and squats, i drop the bench down to an inch away from my chest…somehow that works best for me, and while doing squats my ass goes to about where my ass is…And I DO eat, i make sure to take in at least 150 grams of protein a day. That means alot of tuna cans and whey protein shakes.

Another thing, I play high school football, im a reciever, so i need to be very fast, i don’t think i can afford bulking cuz i’t would take a while for me to be well balanced at 200lbs.

btw why is no one saying anything about the neck thing? i dont think that eating will help that, unless i wanna fill it w/ fat…

You know what? You’re right. You know better than we do. What was the point of asking questions if you didn’t want to hear the answers?

A lot of people here are douches, don’t mind them.
I don’t directly train my neck, but maybe this will help,

Wow, OneEye…you’re a genious! All I have to do is get big for you to tell me how to get big! If I thought of that, i never would have posted this! Golly, I feel like such a moron now…

Oh and thanks texass…finally some quality advice…

OneEye gave you good advice. You are too skinny to worry about focusing on bringing up one or two lagging bodyparts.

Eat, lift heavy, enjoy playing your sport. If you feel the need to do neck work you can mix it in but your time is probably better used deadlifting and shrugging.

And try not to see constructive criticism as flaming.

Stop being an asshole and listen to what people with more experience then you have to say.

Relax buddy…I am listening to the advice… but “come back when you’re bigger” isn’t good advice. And OneEye has less experience than me :S…

6% bodyfat? Gimme a break lil’ dude.

You have barely tapped your potential and you are trying to specialize. Just by virtue of eating, sleeping, and lifting heavy you will grow by leaps and bounds during the next few years.

If you want to make your shoulders bigger than you will need to incorporate more shoulder work into your program and work at it for the next few years. You sound as if you wanted results yesterday. You have a price to pay for those shoulders you want and let me tell you - it’s not cheap.

Ya i know wut u mean…ur right, but i mean somehow my chest, back, legs, arms all grew but my shoulders kinda never did…:S

That is kind of an odd ratio for bench/incline bench, if you’re really worried about it, you could do shoulder work before doing bench press movements. Ie overhead presses before benching. However, I’m not really sure how much of a concern it is at your size.
And for reference, 6’ 160 is really skinny for ANY football position.
As for the skinny neck thing, you would look really odd if you had a big neck at your weight. My guess is that this too is an imaginary weakness caused by you being small all over. Dumbell shrugs worked for me.
How much can you bench press when you bring the weight to your chest? You never really give a reason for not doing the full range of motion, and that would give more identifiable numbers to compare with.

You have a smartass mouth for a kid.

You’re missing the point. You don’t need to focus on your shoulders. Nobody has big shoulders when they’re as skinny as you. Same with the neck. I started lifting at 170 lbs and a 15" neck. I’m now 206 lbs and leaner, and my neck is 17.5".

The message I was trying to get across was “don’t specialize when you don’t even have a good base.” I may have less experience than you time-wise (not much), but it’s obvious I know a thing or two more than you if you don’t know how to put on mass after 2 years of lifting. And for the amount of time you’ve been lifting, you’re pretty damn weak. Shut up and learn a thing or two.

(hint: eat a lot more than you are now, and you’ll grow)
