hello to all. age 47, 5’10" 170 lbs. been frequenting bodybuilding.com, but have lost interest in it. noone their seems to want to talk about health and lifting, etc. so i think this place might be different, and i hope i am welcome.
started out lifting 5 years ago…was 125 lbs, and a fall down drunk. sobered up, started lifting, and love it.
one year ago i had shoulder surgery, and stopped working out until 2 months ago. my weight had dropped to 150, but i am now back up there. thank god for muscle memory.
anyways, i hope to learn from you guys, and maybe contribute a bit along the way.
Welcome to the forum old man. Always lots of room for another iron pusher. Lots of very serious old timers here. Lots of knowledge and experience as well as understanding and support.
On this forum we have a brotherhood of iron lifters. You are more than welcome to join us in our personal persuits for a better us!
thanks for the welcome. a little about where i am…
i don’t have a focused routine…am coming back from surgery, and have several other nagging issues that i am working around/through.
the only exercises i do are:
deads
squats
DB bench
pullups
cable and tbar rows
perfect pushups
barbell push exercises are out for me due to shoulder issues.
at some point i’ll add a DB overhead press, but i’m not there yet.
my goal is somewhere between strength and size.
my diet is lost in space. i have no clue what i eat in any given day, but i do try to take in some whey protein pre and post workout, maybe 50 grams. i am not worried about fat, as i don’t think it’s in my genetics…i’ll either be a bit muscular or rail thin, depending if i workout or not.
Welcome from a long-time lurker. I am also 47 and also spent time on bodybuilding.com until I found it to be too “light weight” in terms of the commitment folks were willing to make.
Lots to read here and some good solid advice as well.
Nutrition is about 90% of the game in terms of appearance. First suggestion is to get John Bernardi’s book “Gourmet Nutrition” – a solid, all around approach to thinking about food and food choices.
there is no rhyme or reason to what i eat. just 3 squares, a pb&j sandwich mid-afternoon, and a supplementary whey shake after workout. i might pop a protein bar about an hour before lifting.
i’ve been gaining lean mass at a steady and reasonable rate, so i think i’m ok on diet.
i’m at 170…i suppose i wouldn’t mind hitting 185 or so.
Welcome! If you share the rotator cuff pain sickness, search in the articles for a complex called YTWL by Alwyn Cosgrove. I do a couple rounds of those with my mobility warmup every day, and it really helps.
Also, it looks like you picked the right exercises for this forum!
i do have a question for you fellas, regarding my chest workout…
on day A, i do a pyramid on DB Bench, and then when i can no longer get 7, then i do one more set of a lower weight for higher reps, say 12-15.
on day B, i do sets of perfect pushups. btw, have you guys ever tried them? anyway, for my first set i max out, and then i do 4 sets of 30.
i guess this is my version of a heavy/light split. given that my rather imprecise goal is a compromise between strength and size, do you think this can work?
my initial results are positive, but i am in the muscle memory recapturing stage…(i made that term up)

Commited, that’s the key word. I’m not as sure which meaning suits me best. Ahh who cares as long as the job gets done!
