New to All This

2 months ago i decided at 6’3, 425 lbs I needed a big change. After 20 years out of HS and not lifting, a friend showed me the 5/3/1 and stronglifts 5x5 and said to try those. I have been eating clean and sticking with the 5x5 and am seeing some results in the way my clothes fit more loosely. I was just looking for any advice from experienced people or anyone else that was way overweight and was able to drop a lot of it by eating right and working out/lifting.

Any supplements or anything suggested? I appreciate any honest advice and thank you in advance

Yo; you got a long road ahead of you doc. I dropped a crop ton of weight… then gained it back… then dropped most of it again… then gained it back… repeat about 2 more times and now Im on like the 4th dropping (injuries, life, sickness blah blah excuses etc). Best advice I could give would be to find a sport that you love and train for it (BJJ, Basketball, Powerlifting) and compete in it, stay away from most online fitness info sources (last thing us big dudes need is to see some 205 lb dude at 5%bf instagramming his meal of Pizza, Fries and German chocolate cake and telling you how you too can blah blah blah) and invest in finding out the psychological issues that led to your relationship with food. As far as weight training is concerned 531 is a great way to go. Once I read it, everything clicked as far as weight training, I’ll likely never do another training program plus its versatile enough to fit into most goals.
some tips:
*Start low
*progress slow
*strength takes time
*better conditioing improves recovery
*sleep is important
*fatloss is largely determined by nutrition (energy balance)
*supplements in general make up about 5% of the difference in dem gainz. you likely dont need anything more than protein powder for convenince and fish oil for cardio and joint health.
-Good luck, stay on course and dont get derailed cuz gettin back on sucks horrendously.

also, check out T-Forum (or whatever its called) user HawaiiTunya as she lost, and I’m assuming is still losing, a rack of weight. She probably as some stuff to pass along…

Jimmy - first, congrats on making a change. This is a huge step.

The guy above who commented made some GREAT points. You write you want any “advice from experienced people or anyone else that was way overweight and was able to drop a lot of it by eating right and working out/lifting” - while I don’t have the same experience, we both know consistent work with solid principles (this is in all areas) will make the biggest difference.

I only hope that you don’t expect the world right away - this is a process of developing a new attitude, new habits and for many, a new life. My best advice is to set numerous performance goals (squat X, walk X miles/week, etc) and let those guide you. There is a beginning and end to all of them; and then you move on to others. Performance based training also forces you to develop a mental strength that can be, if applied properly, change you as a person.

You may not agree with this style of training and that is OK - it’s ok for others to have a separate opinion. But this is a 5/3/1 forum and performance based training/challenges is part of the program: and it goes farther than the walls of a weight room/conditioning.

Commit and make the change. Your life can change today if you embrace strength, performance and physical challenges.
