Spread it around today. I did the outside work with my youngest son. Then my oldest ran a mile and did 200 sledgehammer swings non-stop.
That’s a lot of work! I bet you slept well.
On your main lifts, how do you decide what weights you plan to use? Or do you play it by ear/feel?
Hey Skip. Half the time I follow 5/3/1 the other half I play it by ear. And a bottle of wine helped me fall asleep.
I had JL Holdsworth coach me during a deadlift cycle a couple of years ago to improve my form. He saw how painful it was for me to get the bar into position to do good mornings that he put the top squat on for me after the first week.
At the end of my run there he let me keep it and I have used it squatting ever since. Definitely saves some pain getting into position and I think some wear and tear on the shoulders as well.

Strong squatting and pulling. Nice work!

So I see you’ve had some good coaching. I haven’t tried the top squat for GMs. Maybe I need to soon.
1a. db bench 50’s x15 70’s x15 90’s x12,10,10,10,10
1b. trap bar bent over rows 135x10 185x10 225x10,8,6,6,6 (last 3 sets superset with straight bar rows)
2. giant set
a. lateral raise 20’s x20,10,12
b. close grip MP 95x15,8,10
c. trap bar shrugs 225x15,10,12
3. bowflex pulldowns 160x50,15,15,20 - 100 total reps as fast as I could
4. e-z bar curls 80xfailure
The higher reps and trying to move quickly was killing me. I was dizzy and sweating like a pig. If it sucked that much it must be good for me.
Tons of good lifting lately and I bet those close grip military presses felt good. I think close grip work on the bench and presses really saves the shoulders.
Thanks GV and Skip.
GV, you’re 100% correct I had no shoulder pain. But I was also only using 95 lbs.
Skip, my idex fingers were on the smooth inner part of the bar.

So, how did it feel? Where did you feel the focus shift?
Very interesting…
Paul, I’ve gotten lazy with my workouts. If it takes any set-up I haven’t been doing it. Stones and prowler take set-up so I haven’t been doing them.
Skip, I was just in it for the pump so it was only 3/4 range of motion. And it worked, I was all pumped up.
Calisthenics Night
1a. reverse rows BWx12,12,10,10
1b. BW squats x4x25
1c. deficit pushups BWx25,25,20,15
1d. windmill toe touches x4x26
2. ab roll 1 set
I should be doing this kind of workout more often. Bend me up and stretch me out.
