Hey Alexus! Its so true about having a coach or someone around - its so helpful! I really feel for ya that you have to learn on your own. But you can do it! I hope you can find someone who can critique your form in person tho
But if you need a kick in the ass, i’ll be the first to tell you, put some weight on the bar! What’s the worse that can happen? you miss the lift, but at least you’ll know what its like for the next time, no?
And yeah, if your gym could get bumper plates that would rock! Even if its just a pair of 5kg.

Actually, I guess you’d say I caught a full Snatch. A powersnatch is when you don’t go all the way down.

This week I gave myself some training lee-way since I’m hormonal. Unfortunately I also had a run in with a BIG heart shaped box of chocolates…so yeah…But I’m back on track! Starting today.
Anyways, training highlights include said full snatch on Weds, so that was fun. I realize that dropping under the bar is kinda like a leap of faith. You’re like, “alrighty, i’m not sure what’s going to happen from here…drop!” No wonder my coach said that when you catch a snatch its like zen. Other than that, I’m two steps back on the cleans and re-learning some technique stuff - whipping elbows, etc.
Next day was upper. I started off with a superset of these BB jammed in the corner exercises. Added 25-35lbs on the bar, did 3 sets of 12 or so for each.
lumber jack squats < verdict was meh.
shoulder press
t bar row (or whatever its called)
Other than that, my 10 sets of pullups, pronated. Got 28 this time around, 2 less than last. Not bad tho considering I haven’t training them regularly.
Saturday was Oly and lower. I spent about an hour working the Oly technique with just the bar + a few pounds and then did some other leg stuff. I didn’t realize it, but its actually quite a lot of stuff!
Oly:
shrugs - 2x8x45 < not cause i want to, but so that I can get the motion from the 2nd ext
hang snatch progression (hang snatch → OHS → drop snatch - 3x45, 45, 45, 50
hang power snatch - 3x45, 2x5x50
cleans - 3x45, 50, 55, 60
split jerks - 3x50, 55, 60
push presses - 5x65 < my thumb started hurting so I didn’t do more ![]()
then for regular lower
Front squat - 5x65, 85, 95, 115, 95 < I think i should start doing higher reps on these, go for explosive. no?
OHS - 5x45, 55 < wrists started hurting, also felt like my quads were too tight! abandoned these
and then i supersetted these:
weighted BSS jumps - 10x10, 15, 20
DB RDL - 3x12x15 < oh how I loathe you! only 15lbs and they left my hammies sooo sore!
plank shoulder touches 3x30s at BW < yawn. i could have done something way more challenging. lazy, lazy.
weighted jump split lunge < 16xBW, 10, 20
Anyways, its fun. This week I took 3 days off which I’m not happy about. But that’s life. But this week its all systems go. I think what I’m going to start doing is putting the conditioning on Mon and Tues and the rest of the week is lifting. When soccer season starts I’m going to have to cut out the other lifting entirely and just do Oly, so I should probably start easing myself into soccer mode. I already felt a little tweak on Sat. d’oh! Scar tissue I reckon.

Sounds like you have a good and productive workout, in any case. Have you noticed any changes in mobility since starting the oly lifting?

15# DB RDLs aren’t light weight; when I do mini sessions at home I use that weight and yeah, they’re killer.
As for your schedule due to soccer, you can arrange lifting however you like, just get back to us in PW on the regular.
Do you find your workouts quadoubling in length? That’s what I’m finding, doing so many reps!
Also, I have a lot of trouble with those shrugs. Getting them up and getting under the bar isn’t so bad but lowering the back back behind my neck really tires my arms.

Your oly lifts look really good. I think you hit some points right on. Shoulders a little more in front of bar on snatch, grip little narrower on clean. Looks like maybe bar if drifting a little to the front which would cause you to lean forward to catch it. Maybe pull bar into your body (very slightly) on second pull of clean. Very impressive though.
Moving on from the tussle with the chocolate box is utterly the right thing to do. I’ll bet they were DELICIOUS, though.

I feel like a jerk because my lifts are anything but ‘powerful’ and I feel like logging them right now is pretty silly - So I’m just logging if there’s something even remotely interesting to report, which as of today is nothing.
Here’s the elevator version:
Oly is going good. Cleans have improved (yay!), getting the hang of ‘dropping’ under bar, been killing the conditioning…rest of the week is upper/lower and more Oly.
Cal, actually yes! I do feel increased mobility, especially in my ankles and hips. I also feel like I’ve gotten my upper back looser, since OH squatting feels better.
Hey Deb! actually it depends - when I’m at the Oly gym I pretty much just train Snatches and C&Js which takes about an 1.5 hrs - that’s pretty normal for me. But when I’m just doing technique work at my gym, which I do on my lower body day, that does take a good 2hrs…so yeah. And I wish you could train with me too!! That would be hot. I mean, fun. And I do recommend running the lifts piece by piece like I do on lower day. I find that’s really helped me “get the feel” of the lifts.
And the only problem I have with my shrugs is keeping my arms loose and straight, i.e. not muscling up the bar. Not sure what you mean about what you’re doing? I saw your C&J in the Oly thread, looked good! Have you video’d your snatch? (hee hee!)
Thanks Germanone! Valid points - thanks! I also just moved my grip in on my snatches and they feel A LOT better, and look better too, i’m getting a better arch when I set up. Its unbelievable that just moving your grip closer can change everything.
