Need Advice from Coach D and others on Football

I’ve been thinking about going out for college football next year. Here’s the deal. I’ve only played football 2 years and haven’t played since senior year of high school (3 years ago). I know the game but don’t have much experience playing. I’m thinking about going out next year but would like advice and help from others on this forum, especially Coach Davies if possible. I’m a junior (20 years old) in college and haven’t played any sports so I believe that I would still have 4 years (5 if I redshirt) of eligibility if I continue to take full-time school. I want to go out for receiver. I have good hands and good vision awareness. I’m 6’1 and 195 lbs. but could easily be 215 if needed. Yes, I know weight that weight isn’t necessary to play receiver but just stated that since I’ve been up to 235 before. In highschool I ran a 4.5 second 40 yard dash (i know this isn’t the best way to measure speed/agility/etc.) and was the fastest on the team at the 100 yard run. I have a 30 inch vertical naturally. If I get the go ahead from you guys here, I will talk with my best friend, who happens to be the starting quarterback and see what he thinks. I think I could learn the system and I have a lot of time to train and condition. I welcome all feedback, negative and positive. Please be honest and let me know if I have a shot.

I would suggest that you pursue this. It will be hard work but as you have heard before things worth having are worth working for. Being a part of a team is an amazing thing and if are able to it will be a tremendous experience that you will remember always. I will be pleased to discuss more. In faith, Coach Davies

How big of a school are you at? Have you talked to the football coaches or the strength coach yet? I know of one d1 school where they kept one guy on the team, who was a really bad athlete, but he busted his ass in the weight room and motivated everyone else. I think you should go for it as well.

Hell yeah you should play. Your a grown ass man. If you want to play, play. If not youll regret it later. If you dont make it its no big deal. If you do itll be great.

Go for it. Something the other guys here haven’t mentioned is that you’ll have your best friend throwing you the ball. So, if you don’t get there at first, you’ll be able to get him working with you outside practice. You’ll develop an understanding the other guys won’t.
That’s aside from your obvious athletic talent.

I’m at a Div1 Pac-10 school. I have not talked with any of the coaches yet. If I do this, I don’t plan to be a really bad athlete and be the motivator, although I will motivate. I’m actually a really good athlete but I haven’t played much football. The only setback right now is that I am married and have a 3 month old son. My parents support me and my father has always wanted me to play sports. I would plan on holding a weekend night job during the offseason and my wife would work part-time. The only issue here is money. Coach, if I do decided to pursue this, I will clearly need your help with a detailed program. I accessed your site but did not see anything available for football. Let me know how to get in touch with you for that. Thanks.

I admire what you are doing and wish you the best. I walked on for a year at an SEC school and it was a good experience.I wanted to offer you some information concerning your eligibility. I was a second year student when I transferred to my school of choice so I learned a little about the rules. Once you enroll full time in any college your 5 year eligibility clock starts. What this means is if over a four year period you are a part time student for two years and full time for the other two then you still have 3 years of eligibility left. They basically punish you for being enrolled full time and these rules apply to any NCAA school. My first year school was Division II and had no football team but my time there counted a year against my eligibility. If you find any loopholes let me know.
