My Terrible Posture

I’m a student and a researcher, which entails sitting either in a lecture hall or at a computer pretty much all day long, and I’ve recently begun to realize the damage this has done to my posture, I’m pretty clearly in anterior pelvic tilt, and have some interesting unilateral problems in my hips (and therefore knees and ankles) and shoulders as well. Long story short, it’s become pretty clear that my posture is slowing my progress, so I’ve started working on it.

I did the Neanderthal No More program, which was helpful, but found the workouts really hard to get into, especially the supersets in a busy student gym.

Neanderthal No More I-V made it pretty clear what I need for anterior pelvic tilt, but how to deal with the unilateral imbalances is not clear. I’ve been doing a lot of unilateral work, plus foam rolling and stretching daily. and am looking for some help. What else should I be doing? Additionally, can anyone recommend some good single-side exercises, both upper and lower body?

I read (De)constructing Computer Guy as well, and would like to hear what you all do when forced to sit for long periods to avoid postural problems.

  1. I will raise my shoulders up
  2. Retract them back while rotating my palms so they are supinated.
  3. Then squeeze, bring them down and rotate my palms til they are facing my body again and hold this while bringing my head back instead of the forward neck lean.
see hmm Alexander method I think.

Holding this is ramrod straight posture. Practice holding it throughout the day.

Side effects may include back soreness in the morning.

Enjoy

I’ve been seeing a chiropractor and that has helped my pelvic rotation which caused hip and knee pain.

Have you ever seen star trek, next generation?

where data and geordi laforge sit at the front - they are sort of reclined (leaning back slightly) - i read somewhere that leaning back, tucking you chair right in and moving your mouse and keyboard nearer - these will help keep a more natural round to the spine.

anyone else heard this ‘next gen’ tip?

nice posts guys. really interesting stuff.

great info

I’ve heard this too, that the optimal sitting posture is with the hip joint at 135 degrees. Though what worked for Data’s robot spine may not be ideal for us

I think I’m going to add a mobility sequence to the beginning of my workouts and to my daily routine, along with glute activation work.
