My Raw Nats Suck-fest

You showed up tired and feeling like hell, overworked and under weight, and still kicked ass.
That to me is what it is all about. Damn good job.
Thanks, man. The fact that I showed up that way is still 100% my own dumbass fault, though. Even if I showed up at my best, I would have still been 2nd to Mike T. but the gap would have been MUCH smaller.

When will your next blog posts be? I’m getting tired of clicking the bookmark at the top of the page and hoping something new will be there. :frowning:

Go all in. Just start with the lax ball. haha. I know the progression is supposed to start with something with a little more give but screw that. I coach 10 year olds that roll with pvc pipe. Just suck it up. haha. If it isn’t terrible then it isn’t helping.
Any recommendations on PVC diameter? I use a softball on my legs since my foam roller is to soft now.
Anything from 3-6 inch diameter and 1-3 feet long seems to do well at dropping the pain hammer. The best roller, hands down is the Rumble Roller. The 3 foot one is about 60 bucks but they come with a lifetime warranty. I bought one almost 2 years ago, use it at least once a day and it is still good as new.
I’m thinking I’ll get one for my b-day in early October. How much of a difference does it really make? Mostly, I want it for around my SI joint, hips, thighs, upper back, pecs, lats, shoulders and upper back.

I’m not stormthebeach, obviously, but I have the short rumble roller and it was the best training related purchase I’ve ever made. I recently forgot mine at home and had to use one of the gym’s foam rollers, and the difference was night and day, for me.

One day, I hope to be as strong as you STB. Keep killing it and inspiring us all, man.

How would you do that…you know more or less the distance a specific weight traveled but wouldnt your average power be different depending on how fast the bar was moving ?

Only thing I can think of is with a tendo unit.

Thats a good question. I have started about 10 new ones and havent gotten around to finishing them. They start off posing a problem, then a logical solution, then they all quickly degrade into penis jokes. I need to learn how to conclude a thought like a grown up.

HUGE immediate difference. Pecs and shoulders are tought to get to on any kind of roller. I strongly suggest using a lax ball for that stuff.

[(Distance x External Load)/time]= average power in foot pounds. Multiply that number by the number of reps in a given set and that gives you actual power. Then you can take that number, subract total amount of rest and multiply by the amount of time in every set that work was being done to get total power for all working sets.

Yes, a tendo unit meter would make this much easier. I plan on getting one once I can justify 2 grand for a calculator on steroids.

Couple of things I am going to start doing differently:

In my training log I am going to start recording:

-Starting heart rate, How many hours of sleep I got the night before, How I feel my preparedness is, my motivation to train that day

-Volume on all key lifts. I do this a little, but not very specific. I am going to calculate average power (in ft/lbs) for working sets, count the totatl number of reps in the training zone I planned on being in, and also keeping track of all reps over 90% on ME day (definitely was not doing enough).

-I am going to have a set, structured warm-up for each day. For example, sq/dl days are going to look like this:

Roll/Lax balls everything, spending more time on problem areas
Traction/distraction major muscles/movement patterns for at least 5 mins
Barbell Complex- 5-6 exercises, 6-10 reps, empty bar first, then 100lbs for the second set.
Something explosive
Main workout

Just some stuff I was thinking about last night. Wanted to write it down somewhere. haha.
Interesting, hoping you will post the rest of your thoughts on your training such as what your plan is, your structured warm-ups for each day, etc etc.

And yes, need more blog posts and videos!

The short version: 606, 397, 777. Did not even get my qualifying total but still finished 2nd in the 275 open.

The long version:

The airport I took off from is on some guys farm in the middle of a corn field in Salisbury, MD. I am not exaggerating. I thought I was going to have to sit on a crate filled with chickens in the back of the airplane or pull my truck around to jump start the damn thing. After leaving the singular terminal in the “airport” I flew a pants-crappingly terrifying hour and 45 minutes to the NC international. I got on my plane to Houston and immediately fell asleep. Once the plane landed I realized I only had 10 minutes to trek, what seemed like, 50 f*cking miles to get to a terminal that looked like the one that exploded in Die Hard 2. I got there 15 minutes late, yelled profanities to myself, and went out to find someone to help me in the seemingly abandoned section of the airport. 10 minutes into my search, I realized I went through a different time zone and still had a half an hour until my plane boarded. I made it back to my boarding area just in time for the attendent to announce that they forgot to schedule a flight crew to Killeen. An hour later, I was on a plane I didn’t fit in rubbing thighs with a lady that probably needed the entire back half of the plane to inhabit her largeness. If it didn’t feel like her leg was trying to eat mine the entire flight, I would have been impressed at her swole-ness.

Got to my hotel after the cab driver got lost 100 times… it was his first day… in Texas… not kidding. Got to bed after 2 pounds of french fries and a half gallon of gatorade.

Woke up at 6 and felt like a honey badger was trapped in my spine and it was trying to eat its way out. I have a problem with my hips due to my left leg being longer than my right. My right hip is always anteriorly rotated and my sacrum is always pulling to the right. This makes some mornings/days feel like I am a 100 f*cking years old. This was one of those days. Re thought all of my openers and headed to the venue.

Weighed in at 268. Felt pretty good even though I was lighter than I thought I would be. Chugged some musclepharm assualt mixed with hydro. protein and gatorade.

Squats:

An empty bar on my back hurt so bad I almost $hit my pants. Switched my game plan and decided to crush ever posterior muscle in my body with a lax ball. After 45 minutes of crying and chewing my tongue halfway off, I could stand up with a bar loaded on me. Took 500 for my last warm-up and it felt ok.

587- Felt fine and 3 white lights
606- Same as the first
617- Felt like my back shot out through my @ss when I was in the hole. The spotters had to basically pull me back to life.

Bench:

Set-up with an empty bar and immediately had a full back cramp. Smashed for another 30 minutes, then went 45x10, 135x5, 225x3, 275x1, 315x1

396- Easy in my hands, flaming grip of Hell’s embrace on my back.
412- Buried me
scratched the 3rd.

Deadlift:

This was pretty much the only reason I signed up for the meet. After putting so much icy hot on my body that I could taste it in the blood boiling up in the back of my throat, I worked up to a very easy 610 in the warm-ups.

730- Smoked.
777- About the same
804- Flew off the floor but I was in a terrible position.

Things I need to fix:

Be more proactive about my back/hips. I need to get adjustments at least twice a month. That usually keeps the pain at bay.
Organize my sessions better<~~~ the last two meets have been too random as far as exercise selection and volume control.
Sleep more. I work too much and don’t sleep enough.
Stick to my f*cking plans.

That’s all. No idea whats next. I do know that it is going to be f*cking epic though.
Great read! Lol. Way to pull big!!

I am all in for barbell jousting!
