My Raw Nats Suck-fest

And your lifting stories…

UMM yA!!

GOOD JOB!!!

I’m glad they entertain you. I feel like everytime I go to these things, my whole trip there is a mess and a bunch of silly stuff happens.

I understand the perfectionist attitude. But “suck-fest” is an extremely strong word to use for the only individual who was able to hang with Mike Tuscherer. You did fail to mention that you came in second to Tuscherer. And that is tremendously relevant.

Your lifting looked solid. And I thought you played it very smart by waiving your third bench to save your strength for the DL. Very strong performance.
Thanks. It was very nice to meet you in actual real, non-internet life.

You got 2nd despite not being physically 100%, and with your own set of mental barriers on top of that. Man, that alone says something about the potential you have and where you can go in your lifting career. Stop hindering yourself and get there, damnit! :)
Working on it man. It’s definitely easier said than done. I am working on some things to hopefully get me out of having to work 80 hours a week.

Great lifting! Have you considered getting a shoe lift for your leg length discrepancy?

I’ve got a 5mm lift in my right shoe. I think I need an even taller one than that.

That sucks hearing about the meet. Here’s to hoping everything lines up for you next time. I know it won’t make you feel any better about it, but I know there are many lifters, myself included, who would love to just be as strong as you are on one of your bad days.
It’s all relative I guess. Having 600lbs feel like death on my back when I have smoked 670 in a meet is a little demoralizing to say the least. I probably won’t do another full raw meet until next year. I have a ton of shit I need to work on between now and then.

i would love to be strong enough to do his warm ups, Lol. !
With how I felt this weekend, you probably could have out benched me.

It was cool meeting you, Mike!
Back at you, man!! Nice lifting this weekend.

Im sitting in an airport right now and I just spit my $5.00, over-priced cup of airport coffee all over my laptop I was laughing so hard!!!

You know what needs to be fixed, you are smart enough to fix it, time to get to work son

Nice total! The plans of mice and men oft go astray. Even though you were below your expectations you did really well. I think if you correct the few things you already know about like getting enough sleep you may have the chance to challenge or beat Mike Tuscherer. Mike is a great lifter and a cool person. I’ve had the opportunity to compete with him and speak with him. Good luck with the hips, that’s hard to deal with but you sound like you know how to get around the pain. Nice meet. On to the next one…stronger and wiser.

Awesome lifts in my eyes! I don’t really have any of that hip pain yet, but my right side is pretty jacked too. Ive got overpronation, inward knee/hip…it sucks! Theres always next time. Keep at it.

Couple of things I am going to start doing differently:

In my training log I am going to start recording:

-Starting heart rate, How many hours of sleep I got the night before, How I feel my preparedness is, my motivation to train that day

-Volume on all key lifts. I do this a little, but not very specific. I am going to calculate average power (in ft/lbs) for working sets, count the totatl number of reps in the training zone I planned on being in, and also keeping track of all reps over 90% on ME day (definitely was not doing enough).

-I am going to have a set, structured warm-up for each day. For example, sq/dl days are going to look like this:

Roll/Lax balls everything, spending more time on problem areas
Traction/distraction major muscles/movement patterns for at least 5 mins
Barbell Complex- 5-6 exercises, 6-10 reps, empty bar first, then 100lbs for the second set.
Something explosive
Main workout

Just some stuff I was thinking about last night. Wanted to write it down somewhere. haha.

For someone who hasn’t done any type of lax ball work, what would you recommend starting out with, a tennis ball?

I started with a tennis ball and it was fine for some time, but eventually it burst right through the middle cause of all the pressure I was applying on some tight spots…just something to consider.

I’ve been using a baseball and oh man does it hurt (as in…its a good thing ha!)

My ex-girlfriend used to live in Salisbury, Maryland. The airport is pretty much hell on Earth, but maybe I’m just bitter.

I know you are disappointed in your day…and I am a fan of structure…but please consider the consequences of ‘blunting’ your instincts. Perhaps you allowed the pendulum to swing to far in one direction, do not make the same error in the other. You are your own coach, trainer, cook, etc. and are a ‘Top-Shelf’ lifter on your worst day…don’t over look that there is a reason for that.

Go all in. Just start with the lax ball. haha. I know the progression is supposed to start with something with a little more give but screw that. I coach 10 year olds that roll with pvc pipe. Just suck it up. haha. If it isn’t terrible then it isn’t helping.

However you remember it, it is much worse now.

Any recommendations on PVC diameter? I use a softball on my legs since my foam roller is to soft now.

You showed up tired and feeling like hell, overworked and under weight, and still kicked ass.
That to me is what it is all about. Damn good job.

Anything from 3-6 inch diameter and 1-3 feet long seems to do well at dropping the pain hammer. The best roller, hands down is the Rumble Roller. The 3 foot one is about 60 bucks but they come with a lifetime warranty. I bought one almost 2 years ago, use it at least once a day and it is still good as new.
