My Baby Got Sauce

I never thought very much of squats as a movement until I saw yours. Yours are pretty. And they make me want to squat better. Thank you!

And happy new year!

Happy New Year Lula! It will be a good 2012, I just know it.

Cal: Thank you! That’s not my normal gym…I actually used to work there and every time I go back I realized how spoiled I was equipment-wise. I’ll take bad music for an adequate number of racks.

Brute: Thank you, and happy new year to you! I am excited to see what this year brings you, I am predicting very good things

Kouba: Thanks, the last two are suspect, but oh well. I’m still by my parent’s so I’m not up by the PL gym. Plus, I normally only go there for DL days or when I know people might be there, since I can drop the weight with abandon.

Matty: You’re not sayin…you’re just sayin? I have been thinking of throwing some heav(ier) singles in a couple weeks so we’ll see where I’m at. After reading that Robertson article, I realized i need to put some stress on the system to see where I break down, and know what to strengthen.

and HAHA! My first PL joke, I love it!! I still remember my first PT joke, want to hear it?

(studying for our first Anatomy exam)

Friend to me: Hey what do the traps do again?

Me: shrugs I dunno!

(think about it…think about it) >>nerds<<

Nadia: That just makes my day, thank you! And I am glad they can help you. I’ve been selfish, getting all sorts of motivation from you, I can only hope to repay the favor a smidge.

Kimba: I just know it too, and same to you…thanks!

**This was the first new year’s eve in probably 10 years that my head wasn’t in a toilet at 12:05, and I have to say, I like the direction that my life is heading. I woke up early and went for a 3 mile run with my dog this morning, more to make a statement to myself and the universe than anything else. Happy new year!

My running buddy.

You’re squats are gorgeous! Absolutely lovely. Well done. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us with those. 190 is huge imo!

And plate pushes, totally forgot about those - I’ll have to remember them as a nice finisher. Check!

And YES!! to message to you and the universe! Ain’t that the truth! And the universe is listening

2012 is going to be wonderful!! Make it happen, mama!

and cute pup!

awesome dog. im sure he/her is great company out there. German Short Hair right? neighbors had one when I was little. she was real strong… lol. btw, I giggled at the joke, not going to lie.

German short hairs have tons of energy, must be a great running partner! just sayin

happy birthday! i’ve never tried dumbbell benching but i’m kinda curious to try. i suspect i’ve stayed away from it because my bench really is all about the arch / leg drive. the tighter the set-up = the more weight i can move. don’t suspect i can move much weight at all using just my arms. my overhead press is way (way way) down since i discovered leg drive for push-jerking, too.

Masch: Thanks hotstuff. My hamstrings and ass are sore as hell today, and the plate pushes are the only thing that I’ve changed…so they must be good for something!

Kouba and Matty: Thanks guys! Yep-german short haired pointer…he’s an awesome runner, and sounds dumb, but he’s got a beautiful gait. I’ve been gone at school so he doesn’t get out as much as he should-so he’s a little out of shape now.

Alexus: thanks! You ought to give DB benching a try–I love em…but I’m typically a bigger fan of unilateral work than bi.

**I just realized I have this PT convention thing the weekend of that deadlift contest. Excited for the convention, but annoyed that school keeps ruining.my.life (drama). So, I’m kind of thinking of doing the Jan. 28 meet again…it works perfectly with my 5/3/1 schedule (coming off a de-load), and it’s right in town. I’ve gotten advice both ways in terms of doing it and not doing it, so I’m torn. Humdehum.

The state meet, eh? Why not? A first meet is nothing more than gaining experience. A baseline. There’s never a perfect time. And since it’s USAPL, be careful on your squat depth. A few of those at 190 would be red-lighted. USAPL is a very strict fed in terms of depth.

I hope you choose to do the meet and will avidly follow along. Wish I could have been more help in helping you find coaching in your area.

Hi Lula, squats and yourself looked great as usual. Agreed the last two were high. What happens with the safety bars?

Love your running buddy and i get the beautiful gait. I used to partake in showing bulldogs and bullmastiffs.

Wisconsin or Oregon today?

Snap you have been a huge help…Following you along the years has been a huge inspiration to me and I think I owe a big part of my desire to compete to you. Thanks.

What a silly question…

hahahahaaha. I just sent those to my best pal, who is from Iowa City. uh oh…

That New Years Day run really did make a statement. 2012 will be your year to excel!

I also went really easy on the booze (maybe one drink and a few sips of another) and felt great on New Years Day, unlike some other years. Much better plan, that.

do the meet dammit! lol. is that encouraging enough? words of encouragement from the Tate.

I like to encourage and help other women get into the sport of competitive powerlifting because it’s done so much for me.

I wanted to link you to this guy’s meet video because I think it’s a good example of how strict the USAPL (in this case, IPF: the international federation that USAPL feeds into) can be in terms of squat depth and supporting the bar on the thighs in DL (what the lifter calls “hitching.”). Not all judges are so strict, but it’s best to be prepared.

sigh another disappointing rose bowl for bucky. oh well. now to look forward to march madness and begin the count down to opening day.

Austin: I’ll bet your Iowa City pal had a few words for you after the loss last night. Although, if I remember correctly, I saw some buckeye love in your log, so I don’t think you’re too torn up about it :stuck_out_tongue:

Kimba: I agree, starting a new year on a high note makes much more sense to me than starting it feeling hung over. It only took me 10 years for that fact to set in!

Kouba: Ha! Thanks, I like that clip, Tate is such a character. I’m most likely in, and may start throwing Mark Twain quotes around to further convince myself.

Training:

Hang cleans:
Barx8
65x5
75x5
85x5

Deads:
135x5
135x5
140x4
160x5
180x8

Accessory:
GHR 5x10
Face pulls 5x10
SB HS pull 3x10
Ab roll outs 3x10

Incline sprints x10
Incline walking

**The cue to not sit my butt so low for the DLs finally clicked, and OMG, I don’t want to jinx it, but the pulls felt easy; AND, I felt my hamstrings doing the work. It felt like a new, easier movement.

*Nutrition wise: SO frustrated. I’ve been doing too much reading I think, and am as confused as ever. I am fairly certain I’ve been under eating (1200-1400 kcal/day). According to the calculations I’ve done through Berardi’s articles, I should be eating 1800/day. I’m scared to add in more kcals because I feel like I’m going to store them directly on my ass. (in related news, I’m a giant cliche) I get the clean eats, and the carbs PWO…but how do I figure %ages of cals from other food groups? halp.

Thanks for that link Snap. What does it mean called for hips, on the bench?

I guess that’s why I’m a little hesitant to compete so fast, because I haven’t gone totally max in the gym, who knows what will happen on the platform? And, I’ve never so much as been to a meet, I’m nervous to just jump in and start competing.

On the flip side though, no better way to learn.

In USAPL, the butt has to be in contact with the bench at all times during the bench press. In other words, you can’t drive with the legs and lift your butt. For that matter, shoulders and head have to be flat on the bench and feet flat on the floor during the lift as well.

If you have an opportunity to go watch a meet before your own, do it! Also, I would advise you to start adding in heavy singles for the big three after your regular training once a week. That will start prepping your CNS and give you an idea of where your true 1 RM is for the lifts.

Good luck! And let me know if I can help further.
