Muay Thai and Bulking

I want to start muay thai kickboxing and want to know if it would hinder my bulking phase. I’m at the gym 3 days a week(Bill Starrs 5x5). The muay thai kickboxing would be 3 days a week. What do you guys think?

I don’t hink you ealize what you’re in for.

At first expect to do very abbreviated strength sessions, unless your recovery ability is inhuman. If you tryy to feep up your current training volume and add Muay Thai, you’ll most likely burn out.

Muay Thai is very intense and most schools place a big emphasis on conditioning.

With that said if you plan on bulking and doing Muay Thai, you’ll need to eat a lot more than you are right now.

I second this. It will really impact your recovery for at least the first month. At some point you will have to decide which is more important, bulking or Muay Thai.

That said, it is certainly possible to do both, but you will have to eat much more to make up for the hundreds of calories you will be expending in the MT training.

Add 1,500 calories more I’d say man. How long are your classes?..And not all muay thai classes are the same…some days they emphais conditioning…sometimes just a lot of pad work…that does get your breahting but nothing to get you worn out. Either way…be big, strong, and know how to fight muay thai…and you’ll be one tough S.O.B.

You really have no idea what you are getting yourself into. Start training and see how your body adjusts. I am 99% sure you will have to lower your training volume - assuming you want to continue training Muay Thai.

Before you ask, “What training schedule should I adopt,” go actually train in Muay Thai for a month or so. No one will be able to tell you how your body will respond. Plus, you might hate Muay Thai training.

So… First actually show up to your MT classes and then start asking questions.

He doesn’t know any of the below information. Like so many people, he “wants” to start taking Muay Thai classes.

Will he ever actually write the check and show up? I doubt it. After all, people who “want” to do something are usually the least likely to actually do anything.

That’s true Californialaw. I hope he gives it a shot though, even if he doesnt keep it. Just trying it out for a month won’t hurt. If he doesnt like it, he can continue to bulk and lift. If he likes it he can do both! The end.

To echo everyone else, you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into…

dude do muay thai for at least 2-3 months before you even think about bulking. Hell you should start conditioning NOW for MT…

depending where you go train imagine doing something similar to the following…

jumping rope (3-5 rounds of 3-5min)
shadow boxing (3-5 rounds of 3-5min)
hitting focus mitts (3-5 rounds of 3-5min)
hitting thai pads (3-5 rounds of 3-5min)
sparring (5-8 rounds of 3-5min)
bodyweight exercises

3x a week, plus a decent bulking schedule… You REALLY have to build up to that man. I do a lot of shit in a day, but nothing like that bro good luck…

UNLIKELY SCENARIO Go there train for a few months, let your trainer know that you want to lift weights a bit to get your strength up and gain a lil size (be honest if its just for vanity) and maybe he’ll let you rest a few rounds or not work as hard UNLIKELY SCENARIO

Best idea tho… Start going regularly for a few months, get a handle on it…go in like 4-5 days a week… have your conditioning skyrocket, then bust it down to 1-2 days/ week bulk very aggressively for 3 months or so. Then work your way back in to MT.

Ha! Depends on how many rounds you work them! And how intense the hitting. With a good holder it can be hellish!

Give yourself some time to adapt to Muay Thai. After you have adapted and gotten used to the classes you can work in more lifting. I ended up comforatbly working in Muay Thai 3x a week with some heavy lifting 3x a week, but that was after I had done Muay Thai for about a year. I had to eat like a stray cat at a buffet to gain weight though. At first even your bones will ache from the Muay Thai, so just take your time when working in the lifting. When you do bulk though you will gain very little fat.

At the height of my insanity I lifted weights before school, went to wrestling practice, then did Muay Thai for 1.5-2.5 hours after that on a horrendously low (less than 1,500) calorie diet. It is possible but you just can’t maintain it for that long.

Very very true…

Thanks for all the feedback, I’ve already paid membership at the club and will be starting soon. I’ll try to do both for a week if that does not work out and I’m enjoying Muay Thai, I’ll stop bulking and do some light workouts and slowly ramp up the bodybuilding.

I started my first session of Muay Thai and really enjoyed it. We started with some shadow work, then moved on to sparring, then high rep bodyweight exercises. It was damm hard and the session lasted two hours. But the important thing is that I have learnt a lot in those two hours, and look forward to the next session.
