MRI: L4-5 Disc Herniation

Ankle Stiffness:

I feel a straight line of pain from just above my kidneys to the top of my tailbone, around the SI joint, down to the nerves around the femur (anterior, posterior, lateral and medial), and straight down to my ankles.

Whenever I do ankle-flossing and other foot/ankle mobility work, and there’s a “popping” or quick-release of tension, I feel immediate release and decrease in pain/tightness up the leg, and into my lower back and hips.

No loss of proprioception (after five minutes I get bored).

No coldness or swelling. Also have occasional interference with digestion, deep breathing, and even . . . well, numbness with Mr. Juan Pedro “Immortal” Sanchez Valdez.

I have the same symptoms in my upper body, actually. Except instead of just going into my wrists, my fingers also become numb. I have had the tendons at the insertion of each triceps “jump” off-track and ball up. Loss of mobility around both shoulders. Forced “slouching” to allow for deep breathing, occasionally for swallowing.

All symptoms subside immediately after adjustment. Also, I stretch (standard and PNF) three times a day, as well as focusing on 10 minutes of glute and ab activation every morning.

sorry. yes i meant ESI. i believe my disc has healed from the extrusion but the shape of the disc remains and causes irritation on the nerve. There is some numbing on the back side of my calf i no will never go away.

I also take up to 9 grams of high dose fish and an anti-inflammation complex containing bioprene, tumeric, and bromelain to name a few. I have religiously been takeing a joint complex which I feel has been helpful but from what I beleive you stated early this could actually been detrimental?

I currently play alot of volleyball, indoor and sand. It has been alot easier on my back and knees as apposed to basketball at least. DO you beleive im running a high risk of reinjury?

Also do you believe that with cleans and push presses, possibly plyometric exercises as far as box jumps and split jumps im also running to high of a risk of harming that disc again?

I understand, BBB. And thanks for all the free and awesome help you’re putting out there with this thread!

i believe the nature of the injury is poor posture which lead to poor sqauting. my feet point outward and i dont stableize my core muscles when standing or lifting to attain a neutral spine. i believe causeing tightness in my hip flexors and excessive lodorsis of my spine.

The specific injury came from trying to squat 405… something i never had tried before but at the current time i had experimented with a cycle of steroids leading me to believe i was unbreakable.

well i was obviously wrong. i ordered mcgills book and hope it will help build stability and allow me to remain active as long as i take the proper precautions followed by lots of iceing!

but seriouslu thank you very much. between this and cressy’s thread i have learned more here than the past 2 years from any doctor. if it were up to them i would have already be fused

i live in peoria illinois. if u can recommend anyone in the area ill definitely take it but i will mention the treatment to a couple chiros i know and see what they say but dont take this the wrong but i think most of them are full of shit and are no better than the next car salesman!!!

also do you know the benefits if any from cycles of deca or HGH and disc injuries?

You mind linking Cressy’s thread that you’re talking about?

Does anyone posting in this thread know of any good stretches to relieve tension around the SI joint? Mine keeps coming out at the bottom left and at the top right. I’ve been told by my Chiro. that their is a lot of inflammation around the joint causing the pain, even immediatley after being adjusted there is still a fair amount of pain.

Also, one leg is slightly shorter than the other so I now have an insert in my left shoe to help with issue. Chiro. says the difference in leg height over the years have made it difficult for my SI to remain intact after adjustment and hard to remove the inflammation. So, if anyone has any info. in regards to this I would greatly appreciate it! I can’t find any good stretches online to help.

Thanks guys glad I came across this forum.

So basically the blocks will allow me to do the adjustments I get done at the chiro. at home…that’s nice since it gets expensive. In regards to the insert I have to wear in my left shoe…I’ve heard that possibly I shouldn’t use it because it only lifts the heel which creates sort of a forward tilt just like a womans shoe would, but only for the left leg.

Bushi, I kave to questions for you. If you can anwser that would be great:

  1. How often spinal stability/stretching can be done?
  2. What whould be a simple progression of spinal stability exercises (if you could just name few of them)? I am especially interested with mid to advanced exercises.
  3. I have days that I can barely walk. Two days pass, I do some stretching, glute activation exercises and I feel like a new born. Then it starts all over again. What can I conclude out of that (MRI doesn’t show any bigger problems).
  4. My lower back gets tired very fast. Few hours of sitting, walking and I feel a need for lying down. What can I do about it? Currently (for the extensors) I only do planks (where I try to use glutes an core/abs as much as possible)… Maybe I should start doing some endurance work for the lower back muscles?
