Re: Plate fear
Pretty common, in my experience. I’ve seen a big football player, o-linemen I think, absolutely smoked a 395 bench. They put four plates a side on there to get 405 and he got horribly crushed. 100% mental. Personally, with o-lifting, I’ve found that approaching every rep the exact same and lifting the weight the same every single time helps with that, because then it doesn’t really matter what weight is on the bar, you’re going to do the exact same thing anyways. There might be more to it than that and it probably doesn’t work for everyone but that’s my experience anyways.

Re: Benching twice a day
You probably had some sort of CNS activation from the first workout. Again, speaking from o-lifting experience (both personal and anecdotal), if you do the same exercises/movements in both workouts, you’re generally a little more switched on for the second one, provided your energy levels and diet are in good enough shape to support it. Feels good though.

So here’s what you do, put the 45’s on the damn bar next time and call them your little bitches. Then stand over the bench glaring at the bar, getting pissed off at the bar. Say things to yourself like, “You little bitches think you can laugh at me like that, fuck you.” YOUR MINE YOU LITTLE BITCHES!!! IM GOING TO FUCKING DESTROY YOU!!! (sniff some ammonia) Then go destroy that mental barrier.

This will do two things, first you will think of the weight as small, therefore you will be less intimidated. Second it will take your attention away from failure and instead put it on succeeding. Profit??? I do variations of this when i first attempt to break a mental barrier. Sometimes i fail spectacularly, but more often than not i succeed.

I also like what Jonty said about approaching each set the same. Although you have to make sure that approach is solid one to begin with. IE one that sets you up for success as much as possible but not failure.
