I don’t know about you guys and girls but moving large (or semi-large in my case) weights seem to attract a crowd no matter where you are. Wether I am doing standing overhead barbell presses with 185 or deadlifting 415 for a few reps everyone in my school seems to just stop what they are doing and watch. They actually help me clear my bar and help me put back my mats or whatever else I am using. I mean they follow me around like I am gonna shit gold or something.
So in your opinion what seems to get people staring at your gym?
For me it is these:
Standing Overhead barbell press, Deadlift and any Olympic move that requires coordination.
Glute ham raises last week in my college gym brought the student supervisor running over to tell me they are dangerous and I’m going to pull something and that he’s a PE major, another guy spotted me (held my legs down) and then told me I should do another exercise, the leg curl w/ dumbell held between feet (admittedly a good exercise), another guy refused to spot me after the first set, and in general acted like I was a weirdo.
No 185 lb overhead press yet-give me til December, guaranteed ( i just started lifting again).
People stare at me when I allow my large chunk of man-meat to do its own 3 sets of 15 reps pullups with the 8 pound dumbell. Oh yes, and the other reason is I often get pokey nipples when I workout, and you know how no one can ever look away from the high-beams.
I think the side straddle hop–more commonly known as the “jumping jack”-- is by far the most intimidating exercise. Arms and legs flaring everywhere…who would want to fuck with that?
the barbell between the leg squat…whats that called… you straddle the barbell and then deadlift, very intimidating to your balls!!!
most of the old school exercises
tiger press
oh oh oh , the exercise that is like a bridge but where you do it with a loaded barbell, ie are touching the floor with your feet and you head only and are holding a barbell out like the top position of a bench press.
I dunno. If josher can 1-arm snatch 135 that’s fantastic! I can’t do that. I usually do that with two arms. I would love to see anyone 1-arm a plate per side. Comendable lift.
I get looks for snatches, Rack pulls, weighted dips with chains (kinda loud) weighted chins.
hey loopy, care to make a friendly wager that he can do it? i’m at 115 with chalk on the one arm barbell snatch and i am not a big guy by any means. give me straps and i might get more…
anyway, that said, i think the most intimidating exercise for me to perform is a natural glute ham raise or a legal max squat.
the most intimidating looking…i’ll add my vote for the one arm bar snatch.
I did 135 for 1 rep with each arm one day to see if I could do it. For reps I do less weight, it really isn’t that hard if you’re explosive with it, and ensure a balanced grip.
