I remember reading a long time ago (30 years give or take) that there was to be 9 movies total. The only thing they could say was that there was still going to be 3 original characters in all 9. I think it was to be C-3PO, R2-D2 and Chewbacca. Time will tell it seems.

I remember that discussion around the schoolyard back in the mid 80s too. Maybe it started in a Starlog magazine or something.
I remember having little debates with friends about the prequels in the 80s because many people thought George Lucas had written all three already (he had not) I think these guys saw the novelizations around every used bookstore and library and though Lucas actually wrote those and that there were real books kicking around. I told them if there were I would have read them all 5 times by then.

Wait… so you ARE a Star Wars fan!
And here I thought you were just a lowly Trekkie.
Trek is better than Wars…but there’s no denying the power of those first three movies in the theater back in the day.
They were what movie theaters were made for…other Oscar-winning movies would be better as books I say. Keep the big screen for big things!

Was that a quote from John Holmes?

A sad, sad day for (pop) culture.
More pointless reboots and needless franchise-wallowing.
@mbdix
the more you read about Lucas, the more it gets clearer he actually did very little.
He was a catalyst, for sure, in bringing the right people together and stealing the right material.
But foremost he was very lucky.
After reading your post, it jogged some memory I have about this. But cant recall what it was. Maybe on hbo or something? I’ll have to look for some materal on this.
Its well known that Star Wars pulls from a SHIT LOAD of material before it. Which is fine fuck these assholes that try to belittle what he did by saying he took ideas from other work.

Lucas desperately wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie but couldn’t get the rights so penned an ‘original’ story. He didn’t draw from a shit load of material: he read Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero With a Thousand Faces and the John Carter stories. Those are the basis of the OT. The few truly original elements came from the young ILM team and John Williams’ score.
If Robert Pattinson ends up in any of these films I’m going to blow my fucking brains out.

I’ll be in hell waiting for you too…maybe earlier because I’ll do myself in if they miscast Jack Reacher.
I truly thing Lucas long ago lost true interest in the Star Wars movies.
I think things like this because they appeal a bit to his activism and are interests of his wife/girlfriend or whoever she is, are what he wants to make…Red Tails - Wikipedia.
And its arguably a decent film.
When he made Star Wars he had a lot of influences active including being taught recently by Joseph Campbell which certainly helped.
He let the series lag for a quite a while and opened up his universe to other authors for novels, short stories and games. Many of these authors are significantly better at the craft of writing than Lucas. Then he decided the prequels would not consider any of this work canon. And a lot of fans of the movie had been very into these novels, stories and games for a long time and that hurt him.
The prequels for whatever reason deviated entirely from the heroes journey stuff that he learned in his mythology classes into whatever the hell it turned into.
I think the best way to save the franchise would be a total reboot considering only the original movies as canon and moving from there. Maybe the three prequels could be a bad dream of Anakin’s.

I’m a huge Star Wars fan and all that, but REALLY??? George Lucas sold Lucasfilm, Ltd. for $4.05 billion and now motherfucking DISNEY is going to make Episodes 7, 8, 9? And then they plan on releasing another Star Wars film every few years, like James Bond or some shit.
George Lucas is the king of milking something for all it’s worth and then some. Whaddya guys think? Is there ANY way at all that these films will have any redeeming features? I thought Revenge of the Sith had its moments, but other than that Lucas has fucked up every single second of every single Star Wars film starting about halfway through Return of the Jedi when those goddamned Ewoks showed up.
They should have raped Leia, that little fucking tart.
(*posting off the cuff without reading anything but the OP first, so my apologies if anything has been covered already)
I knew we could find common ground on something.
Biggest problem with episodes 1, 2 and 3 was, well, aside from the last 10 minutes or so of episode three, that they possessed NONE of the qualities that made 4, 5 and 6 so damned good. In particular, characterization, characterization, characterization.
I saw a terrific write-up by somebody on the interwebz somewhere about this glaring difference. The guy first asked a few people to describe certain characters like, for example, Han Solo (who shot Greedo first in the original!). Easily done, right? He’s a brave, rugged, go-it-alone type, a Don Juan with a mean narcissistic streak. He looks out for number one most of the time, but has a strong moral core that keeps him grounded, and is still willing to put his life on the line to save his friends.
Now try the same exercise with any given character from 1,2,or 3. Queen Amidala? She’s uhh…good with makeup and curlers? Any of the Jedi? I recall Annakin had good driving skills. Can you remember one real standout characteristic for any of them? Oh, yeah, there’s one character I could do that with: Jar Jar Binks puke.
Ugh. I have always been one of the hugest Star Wars fans imaginable. I STILL have almost every toy ever made, including the original large dolls (would love to get my hands on an original large IG-88 or the Boba Fett with the launching back rocket). I can only imagine that more bad is going to come from this. Whoever owns the rights to this should do the right thing and not ever sell them to anyone or make another movie again until they figure out how to resurrect Akira Kurosawa to do the direction.
I was surprised, terrified, and excited when I heard this news. One can only wait and see if they will be good at all. My trick is, I’m going in with low expectations. That way, unless its PURE shit, which given Disney’s latest track record with the Marvel movies I kind of doubt that, so I won’t be TOO disappointed.

And if Michael Bay ends up anywhere within a 100 miles of the filming locations I will personally take that motherfucker to Hell with me.
